How do you motivate a Wallaby?
Simple, offer him some money.
http://www.supersport.com/rugby/rugby-world-cup/news/110715/Wallabies_in_line_for_big_RWC_bonus
"The Wallabies squad will take home A$110 000 a man if they win the World Cup later this year but no bonus at all if they fail to reach the final in New Zealand"
Perhas not as much as the French or English will get?

I wonder if any team isn't offering a bonus for winning the WC?
I like that Australia aren't offering any bonus if they don't at least make the final.

Foster's was recently sold to SABMiller I think - a SA/UK company? They'll be the Foster's Springboks before we know it, or an even better fit would be the 'English' cricket team.

Merely tell them that the Kiwi's think they are better than them, which will either rile them, or make them so relaxed and jovial, that they also become unbeatable.
Let me just say that if its a semi-final, or final between Aussies and NZ, there will only be one winner, and it ain't NZ.
Wether its tiddly-winks, football or Rugby, when the game counts the Kiwi's choke, and the Aussies win, simple formula really!

Re: How do you motivate a Wallaby?
Ausies love their sport. It is globally their most defining characteristic.
They love winning and have many world champions and competitors across the board.
And it means the sporting bodies are competing hard for the aussie bumzonseats.
Rugby in particular plays a back seat to league rules and cricket at least thats what it seemed when i went there.
Winning the world cup would guarantee a higher profile in rugby in oz which seems to only get boosts of the big stage when nz teams are playing there-no surprise that the biggest matches were the two saders matches boosted somewhat by kiwis living there.
To pay the players this amount is understandable and few countries will be able to match it. Including NZ who i wouldnt be surprised would get something similar albeit less.
Im all for it as it will help promote the game in oz and therefore the SH.
This is the professional arena and aus rugby is competing not only for the trophy itself but also for its position in its local market
aussie rugby wants young people to look at rugby as a real sporting option and if this is what it takes to do that, im all for it.

I know of these people named Cook. That Van Dieman was a smooth operator. But he was no Abel Tasman. In fairness.
The Dutch and then the British. No wonder...
But that's another story.
Verrily, the walls of SH babylon shall fall. And they shall fall by the hand of the one they call BOD. A latter-day Brian Boru.
Under the radar... unlike others and waiting to take our place at the top-table.
Shusssh.

Nice forward pass from Manawatu there to take the lead at HT over BOP.
Oooops...wrong thread!
I think the Wallabies would do it for $100k... with a bonus trip to Vegas or Hawaii thrown in.

Fair enough too. If they're going to take time out of their busy schedules to travel across the Tasman for a rugby carnival, why shouldn't they be adequately compensated?

Re: How do you motivate a Wallaby?
In all seriousness the money would be a big motivation.
Much better than that pampered holiday atmosphere up at Camp Wallaby near Coffs. Are they still going there? Wasted money imo. They need to toughen up and that could be done at a less luxurious location...like say Maria Island, Tasmania.

Re: How do you motivate a Wallaby?
Dont send an aussie to vegas with 100k!
He'll end up asa little pile of sand in the nevada desert...
I don't rate the carrot of 100k as a primary motivator. To the true sportsperson I reckon it could be a distraction as much as a motivating factor. Not only will you be letting yourself down, you'll be letting your team mates and familys pockets down. It happens generally anyway but this seems more direct.
It either is one or isnt. Do you think Deans will be saying in his core speeches "if you dont come back today without a win you can kiss the 100k goodbye".
Doubt it.
Its a nice carrot, but not a major one. If it gets them over the line...cool.

Not saying it's the prime motivator but I wouldn't say it's a distraction either.
Money definitely talks whether we like it or not. No guarantees for flawless performance mind you - as we see in all sports where the carrot is dangled. However, in this case it's more of an incentive bonus - a once off.

Yep. Agree. Initially it sounds a lot but today its not even a major part of a years salary for some.
A good idea actually but nothing to dwell on.
Wonder what the AB's will get?
Free Bacon and Kumara pies from Ponsonby pies for a year?

Re: How do you motivate a Wallaby?
Yeah its an awful result for Oz and Deans especially will again be under the thumb again. But in the scheme of things, these types of things can have the effect of giving teams the HUGE wake up call that they need.
The AB's seem to get through bad matches well enough to escape these sorts of results that it hits them at the worst of times.
Losing to Fiji next week would be equally as scandalous in NZ but it may not be the worst thing that could happen, and often teams need these sorts of results to wake them up when nothing else seems to.
Take Englands loss to SA 36-0 in pool play in 2007. Then knocking out Australia 2 weeks later.
Theres real motivation in these real bad feeelings of despair, something you just cant create off the field, and this Oz team will be feeling it right now, big time.

Re: How do you motivate a Wallaby?
Yeah, this should be a wake-up call for the Wallabies. We'll see next week.
Better to lose now than scrape home in the dying stages with a win (glad that didn't happen) - that would have been letting them off the hook.
I really think Rocky Elsom never looks right as captain. I don't think the other players would run through brick walls for him as they would for other captains like John Eales/NF-J. Just my opinion - but he just hasn't got the leadership thing right... let him play his game and get someone else to lead.
I don't think the ABs will treat Fiji with so little respect like we saw with the Aussies today against Samoa.

The best thing to happen to NZ rugby last year was the loss in Hong kong to the wallabies, plus it happened at exactly the right time.
i hope Robbie Deans gives James Horvill a go at skipper...

That's a good suggestion about making Horwill captain, laurie. He looks the part and has better rapport with other players. Such an obvious and important credential I believe.

Re: How do you motivate a Wallaby?
Laurie, you're also right about the timing of that loss in HK last year... how often do the ABs lose 2-in-a-row against the Wallabies? Hardly ever!
Imagine what sort of score they would have put on that team today... playing like they did? I know they wouldn't have been so complacent but I'd bet ABs would have demolished the Wallabies by about 30-40 points. It was like watching lambs walking into a bear's den for most of the match.

Have never been an elsom fan. Just dont think hes ever held his own as a world class player in his position. Just my opinion.
He could be a liability for oz this year both as player and captain but then who else is there.

It was like the breakdowns were so dominated by Samoa from the outset and the Wallabies just stood back and barely contested. It was as if they didn't want to get stuck in... which surely must be cause for alarm. It's different if you are in control of the ball and have the majority of possesion - and the forward pack is dictating play. But not when you are being shoved around by a more determined pack with a gameplan. They needed to match up more and get on top - then they could afford to play 'soft' over the ball. This they didn't seem to do until later on in the second half when the match was beyond them and they had a few more experienced heads on the field.
So far from the old style rucks & mauls with all the hard contesting... arms and legs everywhere and the odd indescretion or tactical nous. I sometimes miss those days!

Horwill has been out of the Wallabies set up for too long for Deans to pick him as captain. Rocky is safe as captain. We know Deans sticks with people for way too long. Look at how long he persisted with Giteau as kicker.

This is what worries me Rob. I was kind of hoping he might be rewarded for his leadership in S15. I hope Gits isn't on the run on side again.
RD has to realise if he wants to coach the ABs in the next couple of years... we need to win this RWC!
