Music after scores
First topic message reminder :
I'm a bit bored and my Monday's really dragging, so I thought I'd ask you all what your opinions are on the playing of music every time someone scores a try - or even a penalty. I think it's completely unnecessary and often deeply annoying depending on what song they play. Surely the fact that your team has scored is enough?

Re: Music after scores
To be honest my idea of pre game entertainment is grabbing a beer and then watching the players warm up and having a chat to the people I've gone to the game with. That's fine. Don't need or want any music, acrobats, stunt men etc. Quite like to see the community aspects with youth teams parading around the pitch etc that's something that should be encouraged and a bit of charity whatever I generally support but the random rubbish that gets put on sometimes is a complete waste of money as far as I'm concerned.
Then again I am a Tigers fan and we are notoriously old school.

That's fair enough FKAS - and a lot of people do welcome the pre-match time to buy a drink, go to the loo etc. All I did was disagree with comments about the pre-match stuff being unnecessary and expensive. I do dislike pre-match performances by the latest pop act or whoever just plugging their own material though.

Re: Music after scores
I love Stade Francais' pre-match shows, just because they are so bizarre.
I went to see England Vs New Zealand in 2006 (first AI, celebrating the opening of the new stand [which wasn't fully completed]), and afterwards there was a "firework spectacular" and Girls Aloud playing. It was rubbish. Post-match stuff (fireworks etc) are only good if the teams are still out there.

Re: Music after scores
I go with my gf and therefore the things you mention take longer (bigger queues for the ladies toilets) and have to be fit in during half time as well. Perfectly manageable at Tigers who thankfully keep pre-match stuff to the absolute minimum (normally nothing). The players warm up for long enough and the grounds are open in advance long enough before hand. Call me a grouch but it really annoys me. Not as much as the music played after the scores but it still does.
I pay to watch rugby, if I want to see a gig I'll go to a gig (none of which will contain an X-Factor/Pop Idol etc contestant).

At the Scarlets I hate that they have started to play a speeded up version of Sospan Fach before the match, often it drowns out the crowd trying to get their own rendition going which I would much prefer to hear and take part in. I do like that they play a snatch of Yma O Hyd whenever we score points though, but then I just love that song, really stirring stuff.

Re: Music after scores
I've never been to a firework show and seen a crowd make a noise after it has finished. At a rugby match I believe the crowd are applauding the players onto the pitch, not the fireworks/light show.
Spending £100,000 on a pre match firework display adds nothing to the game. Also, not quite sure how the pre match "entertainment" allows people to buy drinks, etc as the match starts at a predetermined time and the gates/bars/toilets open up in plenty of time.

Also agree that it adds no value (to me). Half the time the players just look embarrassed.
Best half time entertainment I saw was at Old Trafford for the Argentina game. Two brothers (they might have been the Fords) were kicking goals for charity and they wanted experience of a hostile crowd so everyone was asked to boo them (very surreal). I went to the Gloucester game at Welford road and I think they had some schools teams playing (we were at the Gloucester end in the first half, don't know the names). That's the sort of 'entertainment' that I like.
EDIT: Either that or Right Said Fred

Yeah, pre-match entertainment should just go to young and uprising stars I reckon, let them get the experience and let the public get a taste of what entertainment they've got to offer. Nothing wrong with a bit of pre-match music for the crowd to sing along to. A bit of Tom Jones and Stereophonics is always being played in Cardiff, it really gets the crowd going and gets them to make plenty of noise. I was also there in Nov 2008 for the AB's game where the pitch was surrounded by flame-throwers. Exciting pre-match stuff at the time because I don't think it had been done before; feels different that and fireworks in a closed roof. Adds excitement imo, plus it was freezing at the time and the flame throwers going off was the only thing keeping us warm. They (and fireworks) now seem to be going off every time we play a SH touring side. Leave the fireworks for the winners when they step up to the podium to salute their fans.

Jeez when was the last time you went to see NZ play in NZ?
I think I laughed and danced more at my fathers funeral and there was more black too.
The dullest most boring crowd in the entire rugby union world has to be NZ.
Dirge from 1st minute to 80th and that includes the condesending commentators for the TV viewers.

Re: Music after scores
As I've said a lot of times Welshjohn, crowds in NZ are hardly inspirational. No argument from me there. But frankly I prefer to watch every game in an empty stadium than endure Tom Hark and the Joey Deacon pumping hand dance one more time.
I think the Wellington 7's is ok atmosphere wise though, or one of the big test match like NZ vs one of the other SANZAR nations. The crowd in for the Lions was even pretty decent apart from the first test where it was too cold to move and if you opened your mouth to make any noise at all it filled up with ice.

Re: Music after scores
I don't mind a few bars of "The Boys Are Back In Town" after a score (for any team... but Ireland owns that one) but I get tired of "Down Under".... I would rather hear some "Overkill"
GG, I think rugby crowds are pretty uninspiring here in Oz too. You can have a sellout and hear a pin drop on ocassions. RL has a better atmosphere and more varied music selections after a try... I can live with and without it but don't really mind too much.

Just making the point that the purpose of an international isn't necessarily to give the majority of the crowd what they want. The point is a good one that if you turned up, and the stadium lights came on just in tiem for the game to kick off you might feel like someone somewhere was skimping.

True GG. The late lights turning on thing would be special if they had perimeter torches burning at 20m intervals... then "flick" ... there are the ABs in readiness for the Haka.
Give me that over Avril Lavigne any day... and it would save money as well.

Anyway I don't like the music, cheerleaders, 10 minutes halftimes, interviews at halftime, cameras in dressing rooms, booing, cheering, swan dives, any kind of celebration after a try other than a nod and handshake, drop goals, penalties from 1/2 way, anyone other than the captain talking to the ref, not calling the ref sir, replays, locks who kick the ball, any kind of kicking out on the full, English who mention the world cup, Welsh who talk about the 60s, any talk about BOD being spear tackled, or about choking, poaching, residency or rugby league having to go back to work without finish my list.

Nganboy, if you can find a post from me slagging the All Blacks as a rugby team I will agree with you. Fact is my friend I never slag the AB's off, their fan's and haka maybe, but never the talent in the team:)
I think you will find that I never slag NZ of as an island (or two) hence living here. Like most (or all) countries NZ has it fairshare of idiots, I live in the far North and when things happen you know about it pretty quickly.
I quite like the music that they pump out at matches some more than others.

Re: Music after scores
Stadiums have had loudspeakers for decades, of course, but previously they were just used to tell the crowd of team changes, pass on urgent personal messages, give safety warnings, etc.
There's actually much more than just music after scores. The big stadiums have very expensive broadcasting equipment installed and use it to involve the crowd at every available opportunity before, during and after games - with music, singing and speech - sometimes synchronised with displays on the pitch, fireworks and big screen tv pictures.
Looking around, everyday life in the streets, shops and elsewhere appears full of people wearing headphones and talking on mobiles.
I agree with others on here who don't like the playing of music after scores, but it seems we'll just have to accept it as part of the modern scene. It's not worth boycotting rugby matches!

Thankfully Welford Rd is a big stadium that keeps this to a general minimum. It does sadly play some music but generally nothing of particular offense. The speechs are generally saved for the handing out of awards and the introduction of the playing teams or the minis that parade round the pitch at half time. They do birthday/anniversary etc shout outs pre game and at half time (worse money I ever spent, she missed hers, twice!). I never saw the particular issue with things just being left to be quiet. I'll happily (and do) talk to the people around me, it's a rugby game I like having a good chat especially during the pre season friendlies to get the low down on the oppositions future prospects.

It's good to know that the music, etc at Welford Road is kept to a general minimum, and with a capacity of 24,000 it's the biggest purpose-built club stadium in England.
But the really big rugby stadiums, the international venues, do use their expensive broadcasting equipment to the full, and it's where music, video, fireworks and other 'entertainment' before, during and after games are now the norm : Twickenham 82,000, Stade de France 81,000, Millennium 74,500, Murrayfield 67,000 and Lansdowne Road 52,000.

The amount of pyrotechnics at the Millenium is getting comepltly out of hand, its almost laughable at times. On the flip side Welford Road really needs a decent scoreboard and big screen.

I quite like the build ups to the games. I love the HAKA and i hope that they continue to do it always.
One of the best build ups was the Braveheart build up at Murrayfield during the 6N for Englands visit a few years ago. Got to love the single piper as well.

Braveheart one might have been a bit better if he hadnt infact lost, ended up having to step down, moved to france for a bit and then got brutaly executed...partly because he was sold out by another Scot.
Doesnt strike as the most inspiring story.
I suppose the Mel Gibson actually Australian thing worked quite well for Dan Parks/Nathan Hines though.

I had to book a hotel room in the CI before I could go! It's the only way apparently. Eating crayfish every day got a little boring mind lol
SI is cool although the 6 meter swells were a little dodgy !! I knew Officer Palmer who was the local police officer there, in fact he was the one who closed the only licenced place on the island not so long back as the licence was not renewed in time.
