Re: Gary Russell Jr Fights
The next train arriving at platform 606 is the 1850 hype train...
I'm in actually. Wonderfully quick, lovely skills. I'd like to see him sit down on a few more of his punches - but otherwise looks good.

Re: Gary Russell Jr Fights
Just watched Cano, Aranda, Pastrana, Villanueva and De Leon.
Cano took 2 standing 8 counts, a KD and corner threw in the towel.
Pastrana took a right hook and a barrage of quick shots.
Villanueva was put down with two bodyshots and then knocked out.
Only Aranda and De Leon made it out of the first round, Aranda put down in the first with a lovely sidestep and straight left, and stopped with a bodyshot in the second. De Leon boxed conservatively behind a high guard and had only been stopped by one other man, lost a shutout. GR Jr. looked a bit flat here IMO.
+Speed
+Composure
+Steps up pace when opponent is hurt
+Good variety/body punching
+High guard/able to slip and parry when he wants to
-Short reach (although went from 62" to 68"?)
-Short 5'5"
-Can stay a bit still in both footwork and head movement
One to watch, and a fight with Gamboa would need to be in slowmo.

Re: Gary Russell Jr Fights
he looks quick and slick but 17 fights and he's only just fought his first fight against someone with a winning record? And then got the UD in impressive but not spectacular fashion.
Gamboa sparked out Mtagwa in his 17th fight in defence of his WBA world title, his next 3 fights were Barros, Salido and Solis.
Now that's impressive!

Gamboa was 25 when he turned pro, GR Jr. 20.

And Khan was even younger than that when he deputised and in his 17th fight defeated Martin Kristansen in a WBO eliminator. Not saying Gary isn't good, he's very aesthetic, he's just not that special IMO. Don't think he has the footwork to keep out of the way of Gamboa if that fight ever did happen.

This is a hype train thread, take your negative attitude elsewhere

Re: Gary Russell Jr Fights
is it allowable for the hype train to sit in a tunnel for a while?
Looks a good prospect. So have thousands of others. Doesn't look like he's a banger, so will be going the distance more often than not at a decent level. Will reserve judgement until a) he fights someone any good b)someone who can bang tests his chin out for us.

Re: Gary Russell Jr Fights
hehe no offence taken, I just really like gamboa - favourite boxer in the world right now. Prefer to leave the hype-train stuff to the yanks....Lacey anyone?

Well, they aren't at the same stage of their careers. Even so, Gamboa is pretty special too.

Re: Gary Russell Jr Fights
yep but only the Meza and de Leon fights. Not saying he doesn't look good but I wouldn't be drawing parallels between him and Gamboa anytime soon. Think Gamboa is, and always will be, a different class.
