What is the most overrated, overhyped, dampest squib of a match you have ever seen?

Evening guys. Now as a casual wrestling fan I do try to catch up with all the goings on in the business and thanks to you guys I stay well informed and alot of you have incredible knowledge and insight.

Every once in a while I escape the missus' ear chewing and retreat to the spare room and pour myself a few beers and watch some old wrestling videos on YouTube. To cut a long story short I was reading a piece on Goldberg the other day and decided tonight to watch his 'historic' match against Hollywood Hulk Hogan from July 98.

Now I have read and heard snippets about this match and my understanding was that it was a beast of an encounter but how wrong was I?!! It was truely awful. Goldberg's clothesline about ten minutes in was borderline pathetic and hogan deserves a medal for even contemplating selling it!

Which leads me to the following questions:

What is the most disappointing match you have ever seen?

What match do you look back on and still fail to understand the retrospective significance of?

Now I am talking of the actual match itself and not the overall bigger picture ie the storyline, conclusion to the feud etc..

Recently, I went and looked for the TLC match between the Dudleys, E+C and the Hardys, the one with the spear in the air spot. I watched it all on youtube, and thought "What is the big deal?" It wasn't any different I felt to most other spot-fest matches, and I wasn't a fan of the THREE interferences for a 20 minute match that is too many.

That was the biggest dissapointment I have ever found from a wrestling match because so many people say it's the best ever match.

End of the day invincible leak you won't get the same effect of each and everyone of us who watched it LIVE! The feeling of witnessing something special,something what money can't buy. Back in them days wrestling was amazing and meant something. That match will stand the test of time no doubt about it.

Not really sure to be honest Owl.

I honestly don't think the match is that special, I think a lot of the Money in the Bank matches are much better and have better worked spots than that match, and I'm not a fan of loads of interferences in a match. I'm not saying it's a bad match, just that I was dissapointed considering the amount of hype it gets on this board.

Put it this way back then tag teams meant something,the tag titles meant something. This match made the belts actually mean something. This match would easily go on my top ten of all time. The 1st one was epic aswell. A million miles ahead of the mitb matches imo.

Easy Lesnar vs Goldberg w SCSA as special referee

How the hell they managed to have a match that bad and that dead with those 3 guys who were well over is a mystery to me.

No mystery at all mate, the crowd knew Lesnar and Goldberg where leaving after WrestleMania so the took a steamy dump all over it

Even if they didn't know they were leaving the match it self was dire, so poorly put together considering both were quite athletic for being big guys

I think it would have had a far different feel to it if at least one of them was going to stay on, agree though it was terrible

The lacklustre atmosphere didn't help either.

Didn't Goldberg and Lesnar just size up each other for about 5 minutes after the bell rang before even hitting each other?

I remember the Lesnar leaving only became true a week before or something, everyone knew Goldberg was leaving for months.

Lashley vs Umaga in the battle of the billionaires was awful at WM 23, again Stone Cold as ref, and it was hyped to the extreme.

How has noboday mentioned Nash vs Hogan finger poke of doom? That was hyped like crazy that night, not to mention the Butts In Their Seats incident.

To be fair to those two matches, most people say they're crap anyway.

Goldberg v Lesnar for sure ranks up there

The recent HHH v Undertaker match. That looked like 2 guys completely bollocked taking deep breaths for most of the match.

Cena v Big Show Extreme Rules Submission Match.

Definitely Hogan-Andre Mania 3- what was all the hype for that about? Truly terrible wrestling.

To be honest any match with SCSA as a special guest referee seems to be quite crap. Bu to be fair, there might have been some good ones, that I don't know about.

For me, some of the old Flair hour broadways were ridiculously bad considering the amount of praise they get in general. I mean, don't get me wrong, when Flair was on form, he was the best at what he did, nobody could touch him, but then there were the matches that kinda went "chop, chop, chop, take a beating, face bump, get back up and quickly take another one, go to the top, get pushed off, get up and take a face bump, get pants pulled down, point to attractive lady in the crowd, woo woo woo (you know it), repeat 3 dozen times". Just awful.

Also, the matches between Jericho and Austin and Jericho Rock for the undisputed title. Technically speaking, all 3 didn't perform badly but asking Jericho to go 40 minutes while trying to keep a straight face during all the interference was never going to go well.

Another one is the ladder match between HBK and Razor. Back then, it was the mutt's nuts, nobody had ever really seen it before, but I think it has aged really quite badly in comparison to modern ladder matches, even the ones that don't mean a great deal.

I think HBK/Razor ladder matches where brilliant and have aged excellently

You can't retrospectively judge a match like the original TLC's or Razor vs Michaels though - because you're viewing it in isolation to it's build up, and you know how the storyline and the outcome played out, so you have absolutely no emotional investment in it. So you're not going to get it are you?

Demon, I was a tape trader back in the day so whenever I want to watch an old match, I can watch the build up and aftermath too. I think the beauty of that match WAS the build up, not the match itself. Once you've seen it a few times and get to know the spots, it loses its appeal IMO, in contrast to the TLC and MITB matches where the spots still have the same effect over and over again.

Both as boring as listening to a Coldplay album.

I've got to pick out a couple of these!

Goldberg vs Hogan was never described as a great match! However, it is of huge significance as arguably the last great moment in WCW, and also a fascinating insight into the backstage politics that ultimately caused that company's demise.

The TLC match (I think it was the second one, at Wrestlemania 17) was like few spotfests ever seen before. That's why it gets so much praise. Ten years ago it was fresh and innovative to have a match like that on the big stage. ECW had been doing stunt bumps for a few years, and Foley had taken some big bumps in the WWF, but the sight of bodies flying and crashing everywhere was pretty new to the WWF in 2001. Nowadays, you get Ultimate X matches on Impact so stunt bumps are no longer special, but ten years ago they were.

Lesnar vs Goldberg has never been described as a great match by anyone! However it is very memorable because the crowd turned on both of them before the match. They could have had the most technically perfect match with a great story and it would have still been bad because the crowd just wanted them to go away.

Hogan vs Andre is another one that isn't famous for being good. It's famous because it was probably the peak of the 80s wrestling boom, made an absurd amount of money, and made Hulk Hogan one of the most famous people in the US.

My personal pick would be Taker vs Triple H at this year's Wrestlemania. I can't believe the praise it got. It was like a computer game match - a brawl around the ring, and then they take it in turns to hit finishers on each other until one is out of energy and can't kick out. It was just full of shortcuts with very little psychology. I was almost laughing by the end at the number of times they kicked out of each other's finishers. Although to be fair it doesn't help that they are two of my least favourite wrestlers ever!

He only had a one-year contract and it was expiring after Wrestlemania. Initially it was expected that he would stay longer than a year, but he didn't enjoy his time in WWE, and especially didn't get on with Triple H. He also thought his time in the company was harming his drawing power as they didn't know how to present him correctly.
