Guilty pleasures
Is there an album you love even though you know it's naff as hell? Let's put 'cool' to one side and be honest about things!
My guilty pleasure is Year of the Cat by Al Stewart. Good tunes, great musicianship, an excellent album all round, even though it's so middle of the road you can hear the white lines on it.

I was thinking of starting a thread about this, but I don't mind the musical stylings of Usher.

Re: Guilty pleasures
In my teen years I used to love Avril Lavigne and Christina Aguilera's music. I know it was wrong, but even now when some of their older "hits" get played on the radio....totally still love them.

Re: Guilty pleasures
One of my guilty pleasures is the mashups by Rock Sugar (who performed at Download this year)
Based on the (joke) premise that they were a successful 80s hair metal band who resorted to playing weddings and barmitzvahs when times got hard for them, they played a 14th birthday party for a young girl onboard a luxury yacht which sank and they were shipwrecked for years with only the musc collection of said 14 year old girl.
They mashup classic metal songs with more poppy stuff under the slogan "pop rocks"
Plenty of their stuff on YouTube ... some good, some not so good but check out Don't Stop The Sandman (Don't Stop Believing mixed with Enter Sandman) - it can seriously blow your socks off
Also the mixture of AC/DC and Madonna is good for a laugh

I'm partial to some proper naff bubblegum pop at times.
Brittany, 5ive, S Club etc I'll happily dance along to them after a few jars.

Re: Guilty pleasures
S Club had some great pop songs. S Club Juniors, however, were wrong on every level.

Re: Guilty pleasures
Did you know there're web sites devoted to the meaning of the song, Year of the Cat??
I too like the song, saw him live many years ago supporting Wishbone Ash.... but only that song though, rest of the songs I found rather drivel.
But it is great seeing what people thought inspired that song, as well as what really could have, considering his time spent in north africia.

Re: Guilty pleasures
A huge part of my CD collection could be construed as naff because I've got loads of '80s stuff but I think some of the albums are brilliant. Just some bloody great songs on some of them. Here's a few things that I am more than happy to admit to owning:
Poison - Look What The Cat Dragged In
The Shamen - En Tact (early '90s dance combo - reminds me of my raver days)
Poison - Open Up and Say...Aah!
The S3x Pistols - The Great Rock n Roll Swindle (it's just offensively funny)
Bad News (hilarious comedy metal)
Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet
I've got all of Madonna's albums cause she's a legend.
I own three Kylie albums ('90s/00s stuff only not the tinny SAW stuff)
I've got loads of obscure "shoegazing" stuff from the early '90s like Ride, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine etc.
Loads of '80s stuff - Sinple Minds, Japan, Duran Duran....you'd have to look through my CDs really.
Lucky - Year of the Cat is a great song!

Shocking.

Re: Guilty pleasures
OzT, I'm sure I've heard Al Stewart say that he came up with the 'year of the cat' line just because it sounded good!

Re: Guilty pleasures
Hero - I don't actually own any SAW stuff except I've got a Kylie best of which has one or two of her tunes on it with them....never liked Rick Astley.
My biggest shame is probably this album (look them up on You Tube) I thought they were great in 1989

If you have time have a look at these sites, there're more I am sure.
http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/17850/
http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=3526
And most prob year of the cat just sounded good, bit like procol harlem's whiter shades of pale, saw the bloke interviewed about the words and he said something like err man, they just sounded good, but stil get people going into the lyrics looking for something that was never there. As he said, they were just words that sounds good at the time... man

I've met Snow Patrol and got them to sign a blow up sheep that I happened to have on my person at the time.
Re: Guilty pleasures
I've got Snow Patrol's best of and I like it! Also have some KOL but no Elbow - I would've thought they'd come into the cool category anyway?
I actually own some classical music as well....is that un-cool?

I went to see KOL in concert just before Crimbo last year and I certainly don't think of Elbow as a guilty pleasure!

I'm listening to Classic FM Anthems at the moment.

Climie Fisher - Everything

Gotta love the '80s!!!

You wamt something that you may be embarrassed to have a friend find in your CD rack but which actually is VERY good? Try a couple of the albums Bruce Willis brought out (particularly the Return of Bruno)
Very good stuff!

No that's not beating anyone because TT have actually become fashionable again. If you'd gone to a Brother Beyond reunion that would be different...

I'm really trying to think of naff albums I like. The problem is that I think my music collection is cool. Anyone else would look through it and laugh themselves silly!

I get a few funny looks when my ipod is on shuffle and people on the bus hear Emily Osment follow Green Day and Foo Fighters in my earphones.
But I'm man enough to admit I don't care and I like Emily Osment and her music.

KENNY - I wish I'd heard of it sooner, would've gone myself. I've seen Duran Duran a few times recently and they were superb. Always good gigs them
I admitted on another thread that I own Paul Young's "No Parlez" album. The singles he did are all right but there's some bad stuff on it as well. I don't think I've played it all through.
As for Mis-Teeq - don't get me started on that Alesha Dixon. Her song about the bloke who can't dance gets on my pip.

Re: Guilty pleasures
Pretty much all the Girls Aloud songs I like. To the point that that there was a Girls Aloud tribute act on one night on holiday and I was doing my hardest under the radar effort (ie not make it obvious) for the wife and I to go along, she had none of it though.
