Can Johnson beat Bute?
Yesterday it was confirmed that these two will be fighting and i was surprised by a few comments re Johnson. Many of you seem to think Johnson wont seriously test Bute. Now i admit, Johnson is not Ward, Kessler or Froch but i really think Johnson will still give Bute kittens in this. Bute has fought no one of Johnsons class. Johnson is relentless coming forward, tagged Froch with big punches (rememebr Bute chin is not tried and tested like Froch's) and has an iron chin. Now Bute is favoured, but who the hell has he fought that makes people think Johnson will be easy.
I seriously would not be shocked if Johnson KO's him ala Allan Green. Bute points is the safe bet but is anyone else giving Johnson a chance like i am?
I also wrote an article on Bute www.maineventboxing.wordpress.com i wont pst it on this as its a little diff to this qu i am posing..

Re: Can Johnson beat Bute?
How does this reflect well on Bute? Johnson was beaten comfortably by Froch and Lucien is just feeding on leftovers. He's already had Brian Magee as an appetiser. What's for dessert, Abrahams?

Bute is avoiding Khan, because Khan holds more belts and Bute is scared of him. FACT... END OF.

It's a step in the right direction, he has to face the others after this if is successful.

If he wants people to take him seriously, his best test outside of Froch or Ward would be Kessler

Kessler turned down the fight...

Re: Can Johnson beat Bute?
Johnson is the toughest fight he can get before the s6 ends. Dirrell hasnt had any fights in over a year, Kessler is goign to spark Stieglitz and take the WBO fromt he bum. Abraham has dropped down and Froch and Ward are busy. This is by far the biggest test for Bute since Bika. Step in the right direction. Johnson will ask questions of him

Re: Can Johnson beat Bute?
I had a feeling this fight might come off but have to disagree with the sentiments. Johnson is now a veteran and other than a brief 2 year period of real success close to a decade ago has really not shown anything that should make this such a praiseworthy fight. Ousted from lightheavy and beaten by his first real test at super middle I think its not unreasonable to say at this stage hes been shown to be short of top level.
If you view Bute as unproven then this would be a gatekeeper fight of sorts but to consider it a real challenge for a supposed long reigning world champion with claims to be the best in the division does not hold for me. If anything it merely looks like taking a safe fight against a fighter who is both old and been exposed in his recent fights.
Had this been somebody like Cleverly I would tend to agree with you assessment but for an established champion like Bute I dont see it as being anything special to write home about.

Although Johnson is not P4P, he is a good step up for Bute who I have often criticised for his opponents. Would be good to see how he does, if he stops him in good fashion it will send out a message.

Re: Can Johnson beat Bute?
Not sure what it will prove to be honest, Froch handled him with relative ease save for taking a few shots early on and i've never got the mantra of being the "first to stop someone".
Still, it's a step up from the like of Brian TitsMcgee - although not by a huge amount.

Re: Can Johnson beat Bute?
johnson would be a tough 12 rounds for any super middleweight, he has only been stopped once, over 10 years ago. froch didnt have an easy night with him, he only won on a MD (maybe not a fair result but the result nether the less). good fight considering kessler rejected the offer.

Re: Can Johnson beat Bute?
I think it's a fight that Bute could lose if he takes his eye off the ball. Johnson never ever gives up and is hard as nails.
Bet Kessler would have a crack at the winner whatever the outcome

definetly, and if he can get him out of there inside of 12 it will show bute is a serious threat at super middle

i actually think thats a likely scenario, especially if kessler and froch win, would be a great match up and think froch has improved enough to win it this time.

Re: Can Johnson beat Bute?
You can't blame Kessler for refusing the fight. He's a big name he doesn't want to sign up to a rigged fight after what happened to him in Oakland. No-one should agree to go to Canada. If Ward another home boy beats Froch you watch ....Ward / Bute will never happen. Ward will take on either Hopkins or Dawson afer the S6 provided he wins. Bute will continue fighting bums.
Johnson will be fodder. The poor Jamaican has been robbed so many times he's immune to it. He'll take his paycheck and defeat gladly, has to put food on the table after all. This is a nothing fight.

Re: Can Johnson beat Bute?
Can't get excited about this fight at all, and I don't subscribe to the view that Bute has silenced a few doubters by taking it, either. A forty-two year old outside of his best weight class who has just been soundly beaten by the type of opponent Bute should have been fighting over the last three years, rather than the fodder he has been feasting on. Hardly inspiring stuff.
It's a decent fight for Bute, nothing more. And after the rubbish he's been serving up in recent times, a 'decent fight' is the least he could do.

Re: Can Johnson beat Bute?
Think it is a sad indictment of the level of opposition Bute has been facing that a 42 year old guy who has not racked up a big win for a good number of years and is coming off a competitive but clear loss could be considered a step up.

Re: Can Johnson beat Bute?
rowley makes a good point
it is sad that a champ who has had 10 plus defenses hasnt face tougher opp, but i am shocked that people dont seem to see Johnson as a test, maybe not the best in the divsion but he will ask questions.

Re: Can Johnson beat Bute?
i will reserve critism of bute till the S6 is finished. if he takes on the winner or even 2nd place then i'll cut him some slack, especially if he goes on to fight some of the others (ie kessler). if he continues to fight sub par opponents though when all the best SMW's are availible then there really is no excuse for it.

Is it normal to play the referee's national anthem before a fight, or is this just applicable when Bute is fighting?

Re: Can Johnson beat Bute?
glen johnson reminds me of n'dou, tough come forward fighter with a cast iron jaw. if bute drops his concentration for even a few seconds then he might live to regret it. i think johnson will see this shot at the title as his best chance, so will be more that ready and go all guns blazing.

Re: Can Johnson beat Bute?
I really think the experience of Johnson and the fact he has sparred with Bute might give him an unexpected edge in this one. Johnson landed hard shots on Froch about 8 times, Bute keeps his left low at times, if Jhnson lands 6 hard shots on Bute like he did Froch do you see Bute being able to take it?
