US open day 1: matchday
Here we go folks the biggest hardcourt tournament of the year is underway. First day matchups Roger has giraldo which should be a breeze. Le Monf plays dimitrov in a very interesting matchup both players are former world #1 juniors. Fish is already down an early break to Tobias Kamke, maybe all those smaller tourneys before the USO wasn't such a great idea. No irene related problems yet lets keep our fingers crossed. This is it the last slam, the second most prestigious slam, and the biggest hardcourt event of the year.

Harrison has a lot of growing up to do if he wants to be a top pro.

I saw the first 2 sets of that one socal and Harrison in the second, He just looked so lacklustre and as you quite rightly said needs to grow up.

Robson takes the first set on tiebreak. It has been two and throw stuff. Has been lots of inexperience UE's. It is crazy to think that Robson has only played 12 WTA events compared to her opponent Morita who has played 26.

Not really JM. It sounded like a strong performance.
If he broke through and got further than Murray I wouldn't be bitter. A lot has been said about Dolgopolov and I think it is a big year for him.

An American tournament putting American players on the show courts?
Sounds odd to me. I can't imagine that the American public would be interested in watching American players. They don't tend to be insular like that at all.

Considering that Harrison v Cilic was half empty. What partisan supporters they have.

Great effort from the young watson. She looks like a battler but still needs to develop that serve a great deal.
Yeah, I don't know what the Djoko conference is about I hope it isn't injury, I am as interested as all of you guys.

yep agree socal, Watson's serve needs a lot of improvement, she just wasn't getting enough free points from it.

Not only that, she needs to strike first in the rallies more often, can't let her talent go the way of some other brits..!Great effort from the young watson. She looks like a battler but still needs to develop that serve a great deal.

MFC, JM she definetly has some tools but she isn't going to make it far as just a grinder, she has got to get better at finishing off points and being able to attack herself.

fabulous, exciting, deserved win for Sharapova against young teen promise Heater Watson. The russian lionheart came back from a set and a break down to assert herrrr superior class in the final set. After this convicing display the russian superstar has to be considered as one, if not THE, hot favourite to win this USO

One of the tennis "experts" picked Kaia Kanepi to win the USO, no chance?

Kanepi?! Who's the expert who would tip her to win? I can only think of Barry Cowan or Pat Cash

Re: US open day 1: matchday
I think Serena will take the open, and it will be another embarassment for the women's tour how basically Serena is the best player on tour and rarely plays on the tour.
Novak gets going in a little while interested to see how his shoulder is looking he seems to say he is pain free now.

Wishful thinking... Sharapova's only chance is for Serena to lose before the final.
If they play in the final, it's gonna be ugly for the shriekster

Re: US open day 1: matchday
I know fed won yesterday in straights but his play early on was scratchy if he played like that against any of the top players he would have lost the first set and maybe even gone down a break in the second and been on life support. Lets hope he rounds into shape.
JM, Gulbis needs to do something, all that talent, such few results.

There is no way Sharap is going to gift the title to a part time player full time arrogant like Serena. Mark my words: Sharapova to teach a severe lesson to Serena in the final ( provided Serena will ever make it to the final)

Re: US open day 1: matchday
Djoko looked imperious his opponent was obviously not feeling well physically. Good news limited strain to the shoulder in 45 minutes of work. Dodig in the third round I think is the toughest guy in the bracket that is the first possible scare match although I would favor Nole over everyone in his quarter by a very wide margin.
