Gareth Jenkins advises Warren Gatland
Coach Warren Gatland has revealed he has spoken to Gareth Jenkins to learn the lessons of the last World Cup.
Gatland succeeded Jenkins, who was sacked following Wales' dismal showing at the 2007 tournament.
Wales have departed for New Zealand but not before Gatland had spoken with Jenkins and his assistant in 2007, Nigel Davies.
"It did help having a few conversations with them about their experiences four years ago," Gatland said.

Simply do the opposite of what Jenkins did and we will do well.

Arrh...let's hope this was a very short conversation
When Jenkins took a Welsh 3rd team to Twickenham for a warm up and got stuffed he was "surprised" by the way England played.

If these conversations help us do well at the World Cup, they'll have been worth it.
For all his faults, let's not forget how close we came to beating Australia in Australia under Gareth Jenkins.

I know Jenkins is a deity down at Parc Y Village - but I still have nighmares about his time in charge of Wales and I prefer to forget the whole thing.

Should read "When Jenkins took a weakened Welsh team with some 3rd choice players to Twickenham for a warm up and got stuffed he was "surprised" by the way England played.

To me it was one of the strongest England performances I've seen. If I remember we had a couple decent options on the bench but they couldn't make a difference with the first half momentum England gave themselves.

Awful pointless game.
I was watching it in Walkabout in Swansea with two Irish guys. Place was packed at the start and empty after about 20 mins. I stopped paying attention to it I was that bored. Neither side learnt anything from that game and all it provided was an injury risk.

True, Easter did score 4 tries, what a boring game. We had 30+ put us on by France thereafter, and then england lost to them twice.

Great club coach, píss poor international coach, there is nothing Jenkins can teach Gatland to be honest, except for perhaps how to lose and make your team look like a shambles.

Re: Gareth Jenkins advises Warren Gatland
Read what Gatland said: Jenkins sent the team out with a plan but they rebeled and played it fast and loose. Gatland also said that the coach lost his job but the players were all still playing the next game.
There were clearly problems in the Welsh squad at the time; they got rid of Ruddock, Johnson and Jenkins, they considered themselves bigger than the coach. A nasty coach with total autonomy was required and Gatland got the job. If the WRU had given the same backing to his three predecessors who knows what might have happened.
One think Gatland has to thank Jenkins for, is that it was Jenkins side that he inherited and won him a grand slam.

Most Welsh posters of note would remember some key points leading up to Jenkins appointment and his demise
1. Hensons book caused such discord that the whole Welsh camp harmony from the 05 slam to Jenkins appointment was destroyed, causing Ruddock to leave etc.
2. Due to this Jenkins was under immediate pressure hence his famous statement "judge me after the WC07"
3. A certain campaign by the WM to pick a certain player even though he was "injured" ring similar bells to the WC11 campaign. Jenkins then told that certain player if he was injured then to be honest with him so he could concentrate on his available players, however been the person he was (image image image) he didnt....... that despicable paper picked up on this (sell sell sell copies) and hammered Jenkins over it. Some remaining weak willed squad members got caught up this "Scarlet" Jenkins won't pick "Osprey" Henson, and the die was cast.
4. Jenkins put out a weakend 2nd string side against arguably one of the best England 22 assembled, lets be honest even if he put the best available option they would have been pasted on that afternoon
5. The media witch hunt was now in full force, you only have to review some of the terrible unjustified press at that time to realise that you didnt need a crystal ball to estimate the pressure of the coaching team going into the campaign for the Welsh
6. Certain players ignored Jenkins coaching instructions for the remaining two games, if they had adhered to his gameplan then Wales might have got something out of it, they didnt thinking that the "Welsh Way" fast, loose and open was the way to win............ ring any similar bells again
7. Jenkins sacked (quite rightly), the players remained, Gatland appointed told the said players ............. if they did that to him they would be out on their self centred derriere.
8. The majority of Jenkins players won the 08 slam for Gatland, with the exception of Henson............who was brought back in, made to tackle properly (not with his shoulder) made defensive captain - fair dos that was a genius move
9. Henson goes missing............. injured even tho he was on strictly, 9000degrees North, countless media campaigns............. then states come the WC11 that he wants to be on the plane............ ring any bells, only difference this time was Gatland had won "the slam", signed a new 4yr contract and was untouchable
10. Gatland chats to Jenkins before shooting off to NZ

Re: Gareth Jenkins advises Warren Gatland
Jenkins biggest problems were the dreadful back up staff he appointed (roland phillips defence coach???)
his strange team selections a 8 9 10 of owen cooper and sweeney? will james in the second row? ceri jones as a tight head? and the lack of discipline in the camp under his reign
In short he was awful for wales but the manner of his sacking wasn't fitting a man who gave rugby so many years of service

Halfbacks Peel and Jones were really off form, those positions are the backbone of the team. Phillips and Hook were the best at the time I felt. And i'm not sure Henson's book really caused Ruddock to quit...
