Saddest Songs Ever
Being about the only sort of song that hasn't been covered yet, I thought I'd give it a bash. What songs always leave you with a lump in your throat, or even a tear in your eye? Some of mine include:
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
Queen - The Show Must Go On
Duran Duran - Ordinary World
Tears For Fears - Mad World
George Michael - Praying For Time
Pearl Jam - Black
Metallica - The Unforgiven
REM - Losing My Religion
Linkin Park - In The End
Alice In Chains - Down In A Hole
Alice In Chains - Nutshell
If you only click on one of these, make it Nutshell...

Re: Saddest Songs Ever
Good thread! I wouldn't say lyrically depressing as such for these, but very moving all the same - well they made me before:
U2 - Running To Stand Still/October/All I Want Is You/Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
Mumford & Sons - After The Storm
Ray Lamontagne - All The Wild Horses
Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Manic Street Preachers - Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky/The Everlasting
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Villagers - Ship of Promises (not the album version, the acoustic version)
Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City/I'm On Fire
I can't put links up like Dyre has!
Dyre - I agree on the Tears for Fears song, but I think Gary Jules version is more moving because of the way they stripped it right down and brought out the lyrics more. It doesn't sound so dated either.

U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own (reminds me of Bono singing it live, and the hairs on my neck standing on end. Such an emotional track.)
Will Young - Who Am I? (no idea why)
Manic Street Preachers - Golden Platitudes, William's Last Words, Cardiff Afterlife, The Second Great Depression
Dido - White Flag (was on the radio when I heard my grandfather had passed away)
Nickelback - Gotta Be Somebody

Well I'm surprised to see Wil Young and Gary Barlow on this thread. Are you lads softies at heart?
Just a couple of other suggestions from me:
Madonna - Promise to Try - an acoustic album track from Like A Prayer for her mother who died when she was little.
Jewel - Amen

It's ok to reveal you are a softie when no-one knows who you are
Dare I reveal that despite my rock roots, I hold Gary Barlow in my Top 5 favourite songwriters ...
Oops I just did.

To be fair - Gary was/is the talented one in Take That - probably cause he was also the fat one who couldn't dance...

Bright Eyes Heartbreaking
Extreme - More Than Words
Oddly gives me even more of a lump in my throat when I'm playing and singing it, rather than listening to it.

They ARE ultra absorbant, but I find the tissue works better for the absorption of tears Dicey. I think it's because a tissue is a more malleable shape. You could have an eye out with a tampon if you're not careful.

Re: Saddest Songs Ever
A sad song doesn't necessarily have to make you actually cry. They can just effect you emotionally and make you feel down compared to what you were.
I think this thread demonstrates that effectively.

Very true. In the same way a sad song doesn't have to have melancholic lyrics - in fact music can be emotional without any lyrics.

Coldplay - Fix You. I absolutely sobbed.
Blink 182 - Adam's Song. I played this to my missus because I was so moved by it and she refused to listen to it ever again as she cried so much.
Good Riddance - Green Day. Lump in the throat always. The acoustic guitar gives it that raw feel.
