Re: Pakistan spot fixing trial
Could be an interesting trial. And can you imagine what the cricket board on old 606 would have been like
Australian Rugby League player Ryan Tandy was convicted of spot fixing overnight too https://www.606v2.com/t15536-nrl-ryan-tandy-found-guilty-of-match-fixing#555682
And with Wayne Rooney's dad arrested today too ...

Re: Pakistan spot fixing trial
Don't be so bloody stupid. You claimed that a cricketer had purposely performed badly to fix a match, when there is absolutely zero evidence to suggest this is the case. Do you not see what is libellous about such claims?
Whether it is your opinion or not I couldn't give a monkeys, but you cannot write things like that, it is the sort of thing that could get us shut down.
And anyway, not like that was the only bad game Kamran Akmal has ever had, is it! He's had plenty of shockers behind the stumps.

...and is a very rich man. Yknow just saying, no accusations.
Ill repeat my Ryan Sidebottom / Matt Prior reference though as a counter ...possible bribery with sweets aside noone seriously suspects that that was dodgy, just incompetance

Re: Pakistan spot fixing trial
The trial i think has already lasted 8 days and isnt finished, a number of people have been questioned, including the offical lords scorer, who was asked, if anyone could judge purely randomly, when a no ball was going to be bowled, and i think it wwas something like one in 10 billion, or something silly like that

i was watching sky sports news earlier, and there was an official statement read out, and it appears, that salman butt and Moahammed Asif have been charged with another 2 charges which they both deny.

I think this whole thing runs a heck of a lot deeper than we could ever have envisaged.
It'll be interesting to see the outcome, and who exactly it implicates.

Salman Butt has been found guilty of conspiring to cheat, and to accept payments
Mohammed Asif has been found guilty of conspiring to cheat
the judge has said its a sad day that these two have been found guilty and bringing the game of cricket into disrepute

Has Amir pleaded guilty and been sentenced by the courts then?

From memory he wasn't charged as he was regarded as less culpable and lead by the other 2?
He certainly got a lighter ban from the ICC for that reason.

i hope when the sentecing comes out, that they are banned for life. I hate cheats, and i hate match fixers, and these players have put cricket in the headlines for all the wrong reasons!

Good to see. They have done so much damage to cricket to Pakistan and seem to have no remorse for it.
As for Amir, there were no criminal charges brought against him. His punishment from the ICC is a separate issue.

This is the criminal case - a separate issue from the sporting one. They have already been punished by the ICC no?

are you sure thats right about amir ?
afaik he was charged with the same offences but pleaded guilty so did not go to trial and i assume he will be sentenced seperately as a result

Amir and Majeed pleaded guilty, hence why they weren't part of the trial.

Re: Pakistan spot fixing trial
Seven years prison sounds scary. One thing is sure that these are not the only three involved in all this. Now they know that they will get sentenced, wouldn't it open the pandora box and like the OP said that there were other three names discussed. We don't know how much are we able to see of this whole episode.
Another thing which I didn't understand was if Butt and Asif were gulity then why did they take chance of going through not guilty route.
This whole thing is definitely not what it seems to be. Also if Azharrudin was never sentenced to prison for losing matches then seven years for spot fixing will be too harsh.

its not just cricket anymore. Its corruption, therefore it invovles the criminal jusctice system all over the world.

thats complete nonsense
they were being accused of a crime in the UK , they could have stayed in pakistan if they wanted to, not sure what the extradition arrangments are tbh
they only reason they could have had is they expected not to be found guilty and if that had happened they would have had serious grounds for going to CAS to get the ICC decision on their suspensions overturned

Re: Pakistan spot fixing trial
either way, its not just about cricket anymore, as has been said. Its formal corruption charges, and they will most likely be sentenced to prison sentences.

Re: Pakistan spot fixing trial
of course its not about cricket , if it was only about cricket they wouldn't have been facing criminal charges ...
imo they took a huge risk by voluntary coming back to face this trial , they could have stayed in pakistan and let the UK seek extradition but that would definitely meant an end to their cricket careers
if they had been found not guilty, which is obviously what they were hoping, they could have returned to the game at some point, that has now backfired on them tho and they are now probably going to end up in prison and no way back into cricket imo

That's very much a certainity but I think that others involved should also be brought to the justice and not just these three.

I honestly thought they would get off, 7 years seems way too severe IMO
Re: Pakistan spot fixing trial
the fixing took place in UK so this makes sense and they were involved as well. i think board knew that anyway. they want to make out an example of these guys.anu_d wrote:cricketfan90 wrote:The final spot fixing trial got underway the other day, and the cases of amir asif and butt.

It would have been very difficult for these guys to not to atend the hearing as UK and Pak have extardition treaties and UK govt could have pressurised the Pak govt on that issue as well.
I read somewhere that Majeed said that Afridi was useless as he never took the money to fix matches (on sting camera). It is a well known fact that Butt never saw eye to eye with Afridi. There are not too many well wishers of Afridi in the board and that is the reason he has taken so many retirements till date.
There are lots of dodgy things going around in Pak cricket like random retirements, random award of captaincies, random sacking of players, random absconding of players etc.

They were guilty from the beginning thats why ICC baned them and gave them suspension. Imran too said in one interview that these three are gulity because if they were not then NOW would have been shut down (which they did anyway).
To sum up this verdict was inevitable.

not really
there are significant differences between what constitutes a breach of the ICC code of conduct to what constitutes breaking national laws

Re: Pakistan spot fixing trial
the ICC banned them because they were found to be in breach of the ICC code of conduct which has nothing to do with whether they did anything illegal or not under UK law
if they had been found not guilty in the criminal action then that might have given them some grounds to appeal against the ICC's ban at CAS but there would be no guarantee even that would have been successful

ICC banned them because they were found guilty of spot fixing or fixing in cricket. And if I am not wrog then same charges with 4 different names have been labelled against these three players.

Re: Pakistan spot fixing trial
I am sorry if you disagree, but i find it incredible that with so, so much evidence against the accused, that some members of the jury were not in favour of finding both guilty (what does it take). These two should never ever be allowed to play professional cricket again. Some retired cricketers say they are not paid enough, (utter tosh). As Butt as said himself, he got £110.00 per day expenses, £1000.00 per match, win bonuses, endorsements and much more besides. To the average Pakistani, i am sure these amounts would seem like fortunes. They are a disgrace not only to there country, but to cricket and there families. Even with the guilty verdict, i think there will be no prison sentence, but the the stain on their characters will now be indelible. A warning too all.!!

Re: Pakistan spot fixing trial
so what
if you read the relevant sections of the ICC code of conduct they could still be found guilty of breaking that without breaking any national laws
i dont know how many times i have to say that
the standards of evidence are different as is what actions constitute a breach
