Tactics Overview:
Saints will play at a high tempo with Simpson and Cipriani dictating play, looking to run the ball and play attacking rugby with ball in hand. Saints will look to encourage an open game, with lots of offloading to take advantage of both teams not having as much game experience together.
We have picked a number of combos that have played together previously to ensure a good set piece and fluid backs moves (Webber, Attwood, Clark for lineout, Simpson and Cipriani).
We will use all of our substitutes in the second half to continue to give youth a chance to develop in the first team.
Forwards – Set Piece & Breakdown
Strong setpiece ensured by picking a core of players with experience and who have played together and anchored by Sergio Parisse for his leadership and will inspire the young players around him.
Parisse will look to do a lot of carries from the base of the scrum to get over the gainline and set up new points of attack for our halfbacks to exploit. Simpson will also look to pick up and go when opportunities arise.
Lineout we will look for quick ball when possible with Attwood, Clark and Parisse alternating as jumpers.
We will be looking to target the breakdown in numbers, with Liam Gill particularly effective in this area. We will use Attwood and Clark to counterruck when possible because obtaining turnover ball and letting Simpson and Cipriani attacking at pace. Saints will put numbers in the breakdown when we feel turnovers are on.
Backs
Saints will play a high tempo game, led by Simpson and Cipriani who will look to attack at speed and with width – trying to stretch the Saracens defence and create gaps. This is particularly important due to the blitz defence Sarries play and Simpson will be on the look out for breaks whenever they are on.
Mason and Lamont will be used to straighten the line and for dummy runs, whilst Evans, Wade and Benvenutti will be used to finish moves and exploit the space. Mason’s offloading ability will be key to beating the Sarries blitz defence system and Cipriani’s passing ability will be able to put people into space.
Defence
Defensively we will look to play an aggressive game in the forwards and marshal the breakdown/ruck area in numbers and guard the fringes to stop Hodgson sniping.
We will try and push Saracens into a kicking game by using our backrow to pressurise and rush Farrell. And will look to try and hold the Sarries midfield up in the tackle area and wait for support from the pack. By stopping them going to ground we will get the scrum put in and the turnover.

Setpiece
At scrum time we will look to play it quick getting the ball in and out fast. We will look to Horstmann to break from the back and provide us some go forward. At the lineout, we will look to Day to be our talisman. He will call the line and will have Jones, at the front, and our entire back row to support him as jumpers to mix things up. Our jumpers will look to either play the ball of the top quickly and look to our backline to move it or bring it down into a maul and make the hard yards through the pack, sucking in the Gloucester forwards to leave space out wide for our backs. On opposition ball we will look for Jones to get up in the air at the front of the line and Day to follow Robson in the line and disrupt the Gloucester lineout. If we really start to get on top of the lineout we will look to Goode to kick for the corners a few times and really put the pressure on.
Breakdown
We have a very mobile and quick pack to really target the breakdown. On our own ball we will look to our forwards to get numbers to the breakdown quickly rucking past the ball and clearing out the Gloucester boys looking to recycle clean fast ball. On defence, if we are first to the breakdown or the ball carrier is isolated we will look to seriously commit numbers and will look to Lipman to secure us turnover ball. At all other times we will commit lighter numbers to the breakdown but look to counter ruck slowing down Glaws ball allowing our defensive line more time to set.
General Attacking Play
We will look to play a strong carrying game using our big carriers to hit the gain line offloading in or just before the tackle (when it's on) to support runners breaking the defensive line and keeping our forward momentum going. Smith will look to come in field at different times running lines of our midfield looking for the ball on the offload. If running the ball is not on we will look to Bezy, Goode or Barkley to kick in behind the Glaws back 3.
Bezy will look to play around the fringes of the breakdown and make his usual snipping runs when it’s on, tying the Glaws back row to the breakdown. Goode and Barkley have been instructed to play it clever and if overlaps or gaps appear they will look to get the ball moving and take advantage. They will look to rotate at first receiver and provide a different threat to the opposition defence. Abendanoon will look to come up from fullback from time to time and offer an extra ball carrying threat while looking to create these overlaps out wide.
Goode will look to kick for goal when in opposition territory and take the drop goal option when it’s available to keep the score board moving.
General Defensive Play
In defence we will be using a blitz defence and will look to get up at pace looking to isolate the ball carrier before he gets to the gain line stopping any opposition momentum and allowing us to hit the breakdown hard. We will look to keep opposition on the back foot forcing the kick. Bezy will act as a sweeper and look to cover any chips in behind the line. Our wingers will look to sit deeper on defence then the rest of the line ready for any kicks. Our back three have been instructed to play to their strengths and look for the counter attack, running the ball back with serious pace.

Tactics
Tactics vs. Northampton Saints
- Running the ball.
In great conditions we will look to run the ball at every opportunity. If isolated we will play the percentages and kick for territory, but so long as the player in possession of the ball has support, we will look to hit gaps in the defensive line and offload to support runners, and keep the ball alive as much as possible. Our mobile back row will look to really support the ball carrier and take offloads and drive forward staying on their feet allowing further support runners to get close to be offloaded to again. - Control possession.
This links in with the running rugby. We will happily go through the phases and keep the ball. If we have it, Saints can't score tries against us, and we are working on the theory of attack being the best form of defence. We will not kick to their back three. If we need to kick, we will kick for touch and get up quickly to stop the quick lineout. - Blitz defence as a unit.
We will look to get up to the gainline quickly as a unit and stop their ball carriers behind it, denying them any forward momentum and forcing them to kick.

We are going to look to play at a good pace but we are also looking to play territory with Steenson at 10. We will look to beat Irish at the set piece and at the breakdown. We want our forwards to carry hard in the loose to give us a platform from which we can attack. Our backs will look to exploit weaknesses in the Irish defensive line and attack forwards in the backline when they are there. We have a lot of players who are looking to prove a point and they will be desperate to show why they are worth a place in the side. JJ has been named as captain so he can gain some experience as a leader. He has experienced heads all around him.

We are using the LV cup as blooding ground for new players and youngsters.Shaw, Sheridan Masi , Pisi , Lemi , Perugini , Zirka have all had a weeks rest and will play 55 minutes at the most.
We will look to play at a high tempo and put the ospreys on the back foot using our big ball carriers in Shaw , Slater , Beattie and Zirka causing the defense problems. Pilgrim will be in a armchair role as we play through the phases to start with keeping the ball tight before feeding Ford on the gain line.
Lineouts will be shortened using Short as banker ball at 2 and letting our pack run at the opposition fly half pulling defenders in tight and creating space out wide.

Re: Anglo Welsh Cup Round 1
Saracens make 14 changes to the starting XV from last weeks win over champions Newcastle for this weeks visit to Franklins Gardens to face Northampton Saints in the LV Cup. Only Owen Farrell remains and moves from the 12 to the 10 shirt, and is joined in the side by returning World Cup stars Scott Lawson, Alessandro Zanni and Seilala Mapusua. There are also places in the matchday 23 for academy players Marcus Watson, Addison Lockley, James Lightfoot-Brown and Ben Ransom. Head coach Ozzy3213 had this to say;-
"It was a massive win for us last week, but that is done with now and we move on to the LV Cup. It is a long season, and you have to rotate and give players the opportunity to remain fresh and that is why we have made so many changes for this fixture. The LV Cup gives us an opportunity to look at a few players and integrate the players who came back from the World Cup last week. Our England and South African contingents arrive back today and will be given the rest of the week off, before being available for selction next week. This means the boys who play this time out know they have to perform if they want to keep their shirts."

Re: Anglo Welsh Cup Round 1
Leicester Tigers have made 11 changes to the side that beat Quins at Welford Road last week.
Tigers travel to Llanelli to play Scarlets, and welcome back World Cup players such as Cencus Johnston, Nathan Hines, John Barclay, Chris Cusiter and Alesana Tuilagi, whilst Billy Twelvetrees makes his returning debut after signing from Sarries. They also give starts to exciting young players Tom Youngs and Rob Miller.
Manager LukeLobesLuka said "changes were always going to be made for this game - it is part of our long-term plan for the season. It's great to see some of the boys back in training - a lot have come back disappointed with their countires' efforts in the World Cup, but that makes them even more hungry for domestic success and could work in our favour.
There were some guys who really deserved a rest - Sebastien (Bruno), Magnus (Lund), Micky (Young), Isa (Nacewa) and Clement (Poitrenaud) have played every game for us so far this season, and they have been given the next two weeks off.
Scarlets are an exciting side, but we have picked a very good team from 1 to 23, and we are off to Wales looking to come back with the win."

Halavatau was at Bees Matt. They moved him from Back row to prop a few years ago and it worked. Only seen him a few times but he is supposed to be the bees knees.

Think they are still called the Rotherham Titans.
A lot of sponsorship in that league considering they can't find a sponsor for the league.

Tactics
-Mixing youth and experience,
-Robinson to link with Henson who has played quite a bit off the bench for us so has got a lot of game time and he will release Lamont,
-Look to dominate the scrums with a heavy 2nd row and steal lineout with Smith as main jumper,
-Release wingers as often as possible and we have speed and power on each wing,
-Paterson to look to pin them back into the corners,
-Bring on all subs by the end of the match,
-Our aim is to slow down their ball (Williams will be looking to a lot of turnovers and Morgan will carry from the 12-13 channel) and give our backs quick ball to play with,
-Defend hard and pressure them from the 10 channel,
-We are looking to give our promising youngsters experience with underage England internationals starting and they will be told if they impress they can do for a starting spot.

Wasps tactics
Play at a high intensity, use the forwards to get us over the gain line. Get our offloading game going when we can. Quick ball, continue to change the angle of attack.
Use Downey to get us over the gain line, keep offloading to wear Worcester down. McAlister to play flat and bring in strike runners.

Re: Anglo Welsh Cup Round 1
Northampton 32–22 Saracens
Not much upfront in a tight front 3 contest, but Saints have more quality in the back 5 and I imagine Parisse orchestrating the youngsers from 8.
Completely contrasting halfbacks. With both teams looking to play possession/running rugby I think the Saints pair suit this game plan more. Like Pete’s midfield and in some decent form, struggle to rate Mason though until he settles into union but Evans could be a big player for Chris. Much more threat in the Saints back 3.
I think Saints have the edge in this one, with a good game plan and home advantage they will do well. I don’t think Sarries have the halfbacks to play the expansive stuff and might suffer as the game goes on.
Worcester 21–21 Wasps
Edge for Wasps in the scrum but engine room is a real battle. Good backrow contest, slight edge to Wasps here but not by much. Interesting halfback battles too, think Wasps may just have the edge in form but again it’s small margins. Tight contest in the backs also, different styles but very close. Can’t separate this one with Worcester having home advantage but Wasps edging side.
Dragons 12-28 Bath
Way too much quality for Bath
Exeter 26–16 Ospreys
Better Chiefs side through out, decent defensive side from O’s stop score board getting away
Harlequins 19–26 London Irish
Nothing in the scrum contest with a little more around the loose for Quins. Contrasting engine rooms, serious physicality from Irish that will get at the Quins pair around the park and perhaps control breakdown. Very good jumping options for Quins though. Class above in the backrow and some real carrying options for irish.
Prefer both Irish halfbacks, JMH holds a bit of quality for me and enough to have the edge on Steenson. Irish have edge on bench and in backs.
Gloucester 20–20 Sale
Slight edge for Sale in the front row but good bench for Gloucester that’ll bring them back in it in the second. Think the Gloucester engine room has a little more around the park but better jumping options for Sale. Haven’t seen Evans at 8 so have to give edge at 7/8 to Sale, Fasivalu bring a bit more than Kvesic. See Sale having set piece edge but more carrying options for Gloucester.
Very tight halfbacks and not much difference in form or quality. Think Gloucester have a little edge in the backs and a stronger bench throughout. I see Sale getting in the lead and Gloucester fight back in the 2nd. Have to give Sale tactics edge though and that gives them the draw.
