Don't care how one of the 2 biggest stars of our sport gets on at the box office, which is a pretty good indicator of how boxing is doing? You are obviously a real fan.

Re: Ortiz v Mayweather PPV numbers
Given that Pacquiao vs the knackered-out old remnants of Mosley did what, 1.3million, I'd say that numbers are no indication of how well boxing is doing but rather they indicate how astute the promotion has been.Seanusarrilius wrote:tcribb wrote:Don't know and don't care

Re: Ortiz v Mayweather PPV numbers
If 1.3million suckers can be fleeced into buying the Mosley fight I'd say not. It just means that someone somewhere knows how to market it. Same as when Wlad sells 50,000 tickets to German businessmen who want to see him beat some fat cab driver. They're not competitive fights, nor are they legacy-defining. They're just examples of how much the public can be force-fed tripe and pay for it.

ok this is getting way out of hand, let me bring us down to earth mate. I like to know how many ppv buys there are as i feel it is somewhat a reflection of the pulling power of the sports biggest stars.

They haven't been published. It has been rumoured to be 850,000, but that is not backed by any hard evidence.

What would be considered a success in box office terms not really sure how to judge it to be honest

Mayweather-Mosley did about 1.4million, Pacquiao-Cotto did about the same. Pacquiao-Clottey did about 700k/800k.two_tone wrote:What would be considered a success in box office terms not really sure how to judge it to be honest

Mayweather & Pacquiao get in or close to 1 million normally: GOOD
Amir Khan gets about 128 buys: BAD
Re: Ortiz v Mayweather PPV numbers
Does anyone remember when a fighter was judged by the quality of who he beat rather than the number of PPV's he sold?

This was my sentiment a few posts up, although admittedly I came across as somewhat of an embittered old tw@.rowley wrote:Does anyone remember when a fighter was judged by the quality of who he beat rather than the number of PPV's he sold?

Not a concern for me as I think that particular horse has already bolted.

Re: Ortiz v Mayweather PPV numbers
Just really sucks balls that the fights which are lauded are those which as you say are judged on how many PPV units they sold as opposed to how much of a barn-burner the fight was.

Re: Ortiz v Mayweather PPV numbers
rowley i dont think anyone is judging a fighter on his ppv buys rather than his talent, jsut want to see how many people are still interested in our beloved sport of boxing

Sean was not a pop at you or the article but do feel some fighters and even some fans define fighters by this, is irrelevant to me.

Re: Ortiz v Mayweather PPV numbers
I was only curious to see what exactly the fighter judges as a success in terms of people paying for the fight, I and I'm sure most others rank fighters by their records and who they have faced not how many people have bought a PPV.

Re: Ortiz v Mayweather PPV numbers
I most certainly don't judge fighters on how much PPV buys they do, however there is a case of it showing the popularity of the fighters and how they sell to the public and whether they are still capturing the imagination with the fights. Also shows how good a promotional job the TV and promotion companies have done and whether they are successful in selling fights, this is still very important to boxing, without capturing imagination fights become more and more low key.
I find it very interesting to read as to how well they have done personally and also shows as to whether people are still interested enough to spend (in america) $60-70 a fight.
also I believe (Although unofficially) it did 1.37 million buys. which is very good as Ortiz is a relatively new face, looks as though the Berto fight did wonders to sell this one.
