Captains Courageous
Well Richie Macaw silenced a lot of his Northern critics with his inspirational displays of the last few weeks, god knows how good he would have been if 100% fit!!!I think special mention should also be made of Frances captain Dusatoir,he too is a special leader of rugby men.I think he will be a shoe-in for the IRB player of the year award today

I did like Richie's opening statement when he was interviewed straight after the match. "Well....I'm absolutely shagged"

It was a reference to an old quote from the 1950's - then AB's captain Peter Jones shocked the nation in an after-match interview by answering "I'm absolutely buggered" after a test win vs South Africa.

I cant help but admire McCaw, he really is an outstanding player and appears to be a genuinly nice man off the field. He is also a natural leader and you can see just how much the boys get behind him.

If you read the whole thing you will see a particularly good reference to Dusatoir, including his worthy winning of IRB player of the year

Re: Captains Courageous
Both brilliant. Dusattoir was inspirational and nearly stole it single handedly.
McCaw has now done the lot. With 3 IRB players of the year and I believe 6 nominations, a world cup winning captain...doesnt leave him a lot more to do.

Re: Captains Courageous
Dusatoir, McCaw and Warburton have been the 3 most inspirational captains of World Cup.
Dusatoir seemed to be the only French player that played with a bit of pride and passion for his country. They have a few inspirational leaders in their team but have still been poor (Nallet, Pape, Harinorduquy, Yachvilli).

Kiwiwired devil,AFTER the match at Eden Park1 September 1956,Peter Hilton-Jones after scoring the winning try.4TH test NZ v SA .Did indeed make the comment "I`m Buggered" that was NZ`s FIRST winning series against the Boks.
Captain that day was the Great Lock,Bob Duff not Peter Jones.

Re: Captains Courageous
"I`m <absolutely> Buggered" became controversial because he thought it was only going out to the local Eden park crowd.
He didn't know it was being aired by Radio NZ- the difference making it controversial in those very correct, polite times...

True Taylorman - I don't suppose anyone was bothered by Richie's comment now. It made me smile anyway

Re: Captains Courageous
As john Mitchell (my newest bestest rugby hero) said so aptly before the final.
Only special captains and special people have won rugby wolrd cups. and it would be a travesty if Richie McCaw didn't win one.
Overall I would have to agree with him.
Richie McCaw has been an inspiration to his team and country, has always been a model ambassador and by all accounts a gent.
He deserves the success.

I'm not saying that is not the reason but I kinda doubt it was a conscious thought, his brain would have been mash with emotion. "I'm absolutely shagged" is a completely normal saying here.

Re: Captains Courageous
McCaw should retire from what he does and perhaps think about taking up the game of Rugby, as i'm sure he would enjoy it, after playing a Game that relys on him cheating. So Richie, give Rugby a go, who knows, you might actually like PLAYING THE GAME, Literally!!

So when exactly will England actually start playing rugby?
I'm sorry you other Englanders, but that was to hard to leave alone.

Re: Captains Courageous
There was a man called Mcaw,
They said he was offside,
He pointed out their major flaw,
When he tackled, got off his backside
He grabbed the man with the ball,
And pulled him through the muck,
It was only then he did fall,
When his All Blacks joined the ruck
To the layman McCaw was in the wrong,
As with play they failed to keep up,
But his tactics proved to be on song,
As he lifted the World Cup.

There was a man you call Mac Cow
Captain courageous, your best man ;
He pointed out their major s'rrow,
Against a known weak neck he ran.
He grabbed a man allready down,
One with fist stroke the head on,
Then with the knee, here broke the bone,
Show must go on, your ref went on.
His nation stands him for hero,
The RIB rewards and puts him up ;
And the Butchamp had even no
word for the frogs , lifting the Cup.

There once was a man called McCaw
Who killed lions with a donkey's jaw
There were plenty who cheered
when they heard he was injured
but when he lifted the cup, then they saw.
