Given that their office is located near to the Oval, they often chat with the Surrey guys and as such get some good interviews, so hopefully they can get some of those across here for you fellas to get your teeth into.
Cheers

Good news RE: Hyphen.
Things look rather bleak atm for Surrey. Rumours that Tremlett needs knee surgery and will not be offered a new contract, de Bruyn and Davies rumoured to be leaving at the end of the season, Ramps gone, also rumours that Hyphen might not come back or might leave but I can't see that one myself. And obviously, the tragic loss of Maynard. Basically we may find ourselves having to completely rebuild once again, after we ended last season on such a high this is very depressing.

Well done to Somerset and Sussex Well deserved quarter-finalists, and both seemed to put on great afternoons of cricket.
Tomorrows games are more difficult to call. I'm going with Yorks and Notts.

Shelsey - I appreciate you having tipped Surrey to win this year's T20 but think you have to let go now.

But it's still odd that you need to press refresh when you first log on... Perhaps there's a subliminal message about Surrey needing to be refreshed...

Not sure where to post this. But I have to say that I'm disappointed that my proposal that Vic Marks should be the first President of the UK (off topic - thread on what to do about the monarchy) has fallen on completely deaf ears.... Posters seem much keener on re enacting the English Civil War... Rather than looking at constructive suggestions....

Re: Surrey news/articles
Maybe I've been pressing the wrong buttons but I've had to gatecrash the Bears' website for any sort of update on our second XI three day friendly at Warks.
Not many details supplied but sounds interesting at the end of day two.
Surrey in their first innings 144 all out.
Warks 257 all out in reply. Tim Linley with 7-42 . Warks' total considerably boosted by 68 from Boyd Rankin who was the leading figure in a last wicket stand of 91!
We did better second time round and made 305 all out. Rory Burns top scored with 83 whilst Tom Lancefield, who is rather strangely captaining an experienced and relatively strong side, made 66.
Needing 193 to win, Warks ended the day on 27-2 with former Surrey player Laurie Evans gone for a duck.

CF - a lot of Surrey supporters are unhappy that Linley hasn't had a fair opportunity this season. He's massively popular, partly due to his success last year but mainly due to his tremendous determination and dedication.
I saw a post on another site yesterday suggesting that Yorkshire are interested in him. If so, Linley might well consider such a move. He's orginally from the Leeds area where a lot of his close family still live. I would be extremely sorry to see him go but he deserves better treatment than he's currently getting at Surrey.

Tremlett out with knee injury - but looks as though Hyphen may be eased back in before long...
Absent skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown may start his comeback from extended leave for the second team next week when they play Hampshire at the Rose Bowl, Gould commenting: “Rory’s return is being considered carefully.”

Re: Surrey news/articles
David ''Teddy'' Thomas
I was sorry to hear today of the death of former bowling all-rounder David Thomas at the too early age of 53. A left hander with bat and ball, he played for Surrey from the late 1970s for just over a decade.
In some ways, comparisons can be made with Chris Jordan. Often batted around number seven or eight to link the middle order with the tail. A hard hitting striker of the ball. Bowled fast-medium. Sadly he probably never fulfilled his inital promise.
However, unlike Jordan so far at least, he did enjoy some devastating success. No more than in 1982 when Surrey won the Nat West trophy (then the premier one day county tournament, a 60 over knock-out competition). Thomas was a star of the whole tournament and the final itself. He was the top run scorer in the competition that year. His efforts with the ball in the final against Warks earned him three economical top order wickets - including that of Dennis Amiss - and the Man of the Match award. Warks were so outplayed that Surrey trounced them by 9 wickets in little more than 30 overs and Thomas wasn't required to bat.
Five years after that day in the sun, he left Surrey for Gloucs in an effort to boost what was by then a flagging career. Tragically hopes of any sporting revival were dealt a devastating blow when he was diagnosed the following year with multiple sclerosis. This soon led to his retirement from the game. However, despite the illness becoming progressively worse and leaving him confined to a wheelchair, he formed and ran a successful corporate hospitality business. He also retained links with the Oval where he remained a popular figure and was always known by his nickname of ''Teddy''.

Guildford. Really sorry to hear that news. I had forgotten about the Warks final - but it comes back now. That was his finest hour for Surrey. I do recall there was a quite a period when it seemed Thomas was destined to progress a lot further. I had very high hopes of him.
Was it Thomas who had a very strange bowling action (or am I thinking of Ray Baker ) ?

Corporal -The very strange bowling action has started bells ringing - was it Thomas who bowled off the wrong foot?
Hugh Wilson, a Guildford boy, was another fast bowling white hope for Surrey around that time with an uncertain action and incidentally a good friend of Thomas who helped him a lot when serious illness was diagnosed.
That's all tonight folks! Airport run to collect Batgirl 2.

Guildford - I have a feeling that it was indeed Thomas who bowled off the "wrong" foot, making the action look quite bizarre.
Hugh Wilson very briefly threatened to become a star fast bowler. He was very rapid but could also be very erratic. I saw him take quite a few wickets in a limited overs final against Essex.

Rory is having a net with Alec Stewart at Edgbaston apparently
Also, let's have some positive news - 16 year old Dom Sibley scored his 3rd double century in 2 seasons for the Surrey U17's last week, by all accounts a massive talent and I look forward to seeing how he develops. And he's an opener!

What tragic news
In my early days of following Surrey, Teddy was one of my heroes, he was quite rapid when he wanted to be, and he could certainly bat. My first CC match was the three days of the Surrey v Hampshire game in the summer of '82, when Dave and Graham Monkhouse's last wicket stand edged us closer and closer to victory. Low scoring, but one of the most exciting matches I ever witnessed!

Evening chaps! Yes Corporal it was Teddy who appeared to bowl off the wrong foot! Whereas the classic action (a la me in my youth ) is side on, Teddy got to the wicket and sort of turned square on, before releasing the cherry........at great pace it has to be said, and was once dubbed the fastest 'white' bowler in County cricket. We had Sylvester Clarke in the team at the same time.....he was lightening!! I used to wince at some of the short stuff the two of them bowled!
Have kept in touch with the scores, but have lost the appetite to converse since the Tom Maynard tragedy.
Good to see Surrey tried to keep the spirits of the lads up by employing a clown for the T20 in the guise of Dirk Nannes though!

Gooch - thanks for that update - and reassuring to know that my memory is occasionally functioning!
Certainly difficult days at Surrey, what with the tragedy and the accompanying recriminations about the culture that had allegedly developed in parts of the club...
On the plus side we seem finally to have fixed on an opening partnership to operate for several matches in a row and both Burns and Ansari are rising to the challenge....

Thanks for that update, Carrot. Confess I had overlooked today's second XI game - no reference to it on the official site as far as I'm aware.
Catching up with the old scorecard, I also note a fine knock from Spriegel and good bowling performances from Jewell, Edwards and Linley.
I just wonder if Hyphen might play tomorrow in the CB 40 game at Notts. Squad not yet announced which might be significant ....

Reported on the Club site that 'Interesting' has signed a three year contract. Hopefully that will lead to him being more settled (there had been rumours of a return to Worcs) and a return to his much better form of last season.

Goochie - there's a splendid tribute to Teddy in today's Surrey Ad. Really brings out his talent and humour. This should be available online in a few days. I'm shortly off on a week's hols but will try and post a link when I'm back.
I hadn't appreciated how quick Teddy was (in my defence, I rarely watched Surrey in those days). Once described by Clive Lloyd as ''the fastest white bowler in the world''.

Goochie and all - unfortunately this article hasn't appeared online. As well as Clive Lloyd's comment above, there was further evidence that Teddy was an even better cricketer than I recalled. In the early 1980s he was named in an England twelve for a Test match against New Zealand, only to be the one left out of the starting eleven. That was the closest and only time he got towards international recognition.
Also, a nice story about his rather mad cap, unwordly wise character. Once the car he was driving (possibly his dad's) in the middle of nowhere got a puncture. He didn't really know what to do but somehow managed to put the spare on. He didn't appreciate the wheel he had removed would be of any use and so threw it over a hedge and drove off!
At the members' forum meeting yesterday, it was stated that his funeral was being held later the same day in Beaconsfield which would be attended by Alec Stewart and the Club Chairman. There was a minute's silence in his memory at the meeting.
I also spotted a photo of Teddy in the Pavilion. This showed him bowling ''off the wrong foot'' as some of us recalled.

Re: Surrey news/articles
having been out of it for the last couple of weeks... (some other minor sporting event going on in London)... just catching up on Surrey news... very sorry to hear about the passing away of David Thomas... I have memories of watching him play at the Oval...sitting alongside the Corporal with our sandwiches! I think like many of our bowlers at that time, they got into the side primarily as bowlers who could bat a bit... but as their careers progressed, their batting improved by leaps and bounds... but the bowling never quite reached the heights that we'd hoped for...
Thank you Guldford Bat for reminding us of DT's greatest day for Surrey... I have to confess that I'd forgotten those details...(but it was a few years ago now!
RIP David Thomas

Jimbo - no doubt you and all the Hants supporters were heartbroken that KP was out first ball....denied the chance of seeing him in full flow...

Unfortunately he never found another county willing to sign him. I believe he played for a Surrey old boys team a couple of months ago. Other than that, I don't know what he's up to now.

Re: Surrey news/articles
Schofield was probably a little unfortunate to my eyes - he appeared to be a useful one-day contributor but Surrey's plethora of younger and similar options (Spriegel, Ansari) was the decisive factor in him leaving I guess. I'm a bit surprised that a less successful one-day side didn't take him on, but then I guess paying a 30-something that probably won't feature in the Championship isn't really money well spent.
