Djokovic's 2011 record
So as of the end of October Djokovic's record stood at 64-3, which is absolutely phenomenal. Assuming he wins in Basel that record will stand at 69-3. Add in a win in Paris and he will move on to 74-3, and emerging victorious from the Master's Cup will leave him with a 2011 record of 79 wins and only 3 losses. Now compare that to Federer's 2006 record of 92-5. How is it that Djokovic, who seems to have won everything this year, will still fall short of matching Federer's number of match wins in 2006 by a whole 13 (best case scenario)? It just seems bizarre; I know I could (and probably should) go back and look through the records, but I don't remember Federer playing an especially large number of tournaments that year. I'm guessing if you throw Djokovic's Davis Cup wins this year into the equation it might even things out a bit but still, it does drive it home how phenomenal a year 2006 was for the Fed.

Don't you think you've got the wrong title....should've read:

I don't think the Djoker will win Basel - Paris - WTF in a row.
It's a safer estimate to consider the eventuality of a win and two losses imo. This would bring the y/e record of the serb around 77 - 5. Still good enough, though

Maybe...I think the real point is that I struggle to understand how Federer was able to win so many matches in 2006, when Djokovic has won almost every match he's played this year and is still not really going to get close to Federer's total.

Djokovic will obviously make the final, but I don't see Fed losing to him this week.

Think that the Masters events (at least the main ones) in 2006 had 64 entries rather than the current 48. Therefore no first round byes for the seeded players meaning they played 6 games if they got to the final rather than 5. That wolud explain some of the discrepancy.

Re: Djokovic's 2011 record
Djokovic did skip some tournaments, did they both play same number of tournaments? safe guess would be no, and next, like Calder pointed out master events had more rounds than now which means extra matches and extra wins.
Finally Federer it his prime was so good, people now realize that when they see such a performance by Nole this year. Whatever happens from here on, still it will go down as one of the best performance by a player in a given season.
