Cotto v Margarito - Who you cheering for? Empty Cotto v Margarito - Who you cheering for?

Post by Steffan Mon 14 Nov 2011, 1:59 pm

I am cheering on the Marg now. Think I am the only person mind

He has really been made into the villain in this fight and has played the role quite well to be fair

Kinda like a Mexican bad guy in a cowboy movie. Cotto is being made as the honest good guy father of 4 bringing justice to town etc

You gotta love a reckless villain though. El Indio in 'A Few Dollars More' is one of my favourite charactors of all time

I thought the Marg came over well in the Faceoff. He is a throwback to the old gladiators

Lots of spirit in the ring as well. Dont get me wrong I like Cotto but hopes the Marg wins this one

Playing the villain by illegally loading his handwraps. Yeah good job Antonio.

I don't cheer for people. I just watch the fight.

Big difference, though, is that this isn't a movie - it's real life, and I have no desire to root for (or honour) a man whose chief claim to fame is that he sought to gain a potentially fatal and highly illegal advantage in an already highly dangerous sport. To claim that Margarito has been made a villain by others is absolutely ridiculous - he did all of that himself.

I will be chearing for Cotto, and would like to see Margarito given a career-ending beating, to be honest. Sadly, I fear this fight will be a near carbon copy of their first encounter. Would be delighted if I were to be proved wrong, though.

Well the Marg has said he is willing to die in the ring but unlike yourself I hope both fighters come out with their health intact

I hope Margarito's long-term health is fine afterwards too, Steffan. I'd just like to see both his eyes swollen shut and, perhaps, something like a couple of broken ribs for him come fight night. Sadistic as it sounds, seeing such a filthy cheat given a beating would be satisfying to me, as I suspect it would to a few others as well. 'Reap what you sow' springs to mind.

Manos - was that a jest? And a fine one at that?

I didn't know you did humour on here old boy - I thought you above such tomfoolery and only debated serious issues.
----------------------
Obvious support goes to Cotto. I'll watch the fight, in an unbiased fashion - but in terms of my, irrelevant wishes (with respect to fight outcome) - I'd like to see Miguel get the monkey off his back with regards to the Margarito loss.

He has handled himself with great dignity (unlike Cintron) after his defeat and I still believe that rounds 1-4 of Marg-Cotto 1 are some of the best examples of fighting off the back foot that I have ever seen, due to Cotto's seeming brilliance at slipping and avoiding Marg's shots - before landing what seemed like hard, vicious, punishing counters.

That said, it seemed that Margarito wouldn't have been stopped by an RPG that night. He took all manner of facial abuse without slowing down. I don't think he's the fighter he was, and my feeling is that he's slipped. So the head is leaning towards Cotto as well as the heart.

Course, there's always the possibility that he's just got Cotto's number...

This is exactly what I fear, oxring. Given the nature of the beatings he's since taken against Mosley and Pacquiao, and considering the doubts about how legitimate the result of the first fight was, I can see why a lot of money is being placed on Cotto - but something tells me that Margarito has got the wood on him. I'm not sure if Cotto hits quite hard enough at 154 lb to halt Margarito's forward march, and we've seen it time and time again that Cotto, eventually, will fold if he's under intense pressure for long enough. I agree that Margarito probably isn't the fighter he was back in 2008, but I'd say that the exact same goes for Cotto who, let's not forget, has taken a couple of punishing beatings since then as well.

I can honestly see a very similar fight to their first one, though as I said above I'll be delighted if I'm wrong.

i felt cotto was doing well until the cumulative force of marg's punches took their toll.

the relentless pain of every punch must have been absolute torture. once his face started to swell and bleed, every jab even must have felt like a baseball bat.

you can argue he shouldn't be getting hit, but neither fighter is a defensive genius.

i'm rooting for cotto.

*there is always the chance that marg's wraps weren't illegal for the cotto fight.

Exactly. He still denys it. I guess whether it is true or not the 'loaded glove' myth will always be there as it is with Dempsey Willard

Its not really there with Dempsey Willard.

And its hardly a myth - given that we KNOW Marg was wrapping it in his next fight. Its a possibility in this fight. Myth implies a greater degree of uncertainty about his actions.

cotto without a shadow of a doubt. no way margacheato only used plastered wraps in the mosely fight.....i just dont buy it.

hope cotto retires him. redemption for cotto and hey....dont forget - a rematch with manny was another bob-option...it'll sell better than bradley if mayweather still doesnt want to play and koncz convinces them to leave marquez 4 alone. (marquez v morales at 140 looks like a decent shout - one for suleiman to get himself excited about anyway)
