Gatland thinks, England have made a cardinal error in losing Martin Johnson as their leader.
"Gatland thinks, England have made a cardinal error in losing Martin Johnson as their leader."
“I think he [Johnson] would have learnt from his experiences. He was let down badly by some people in New Zealand but that would have made him better and stronger as a manager,” Gatland says.
“From a purely selfish point of view it’s good for the rest of us because England won’t benefit from Martin being there and learning from it. Someone’s going to have to come in and start again. That takes a bit of time. We saw that with Martin. He won 10 of his last 13 internationals but he was let down by a lot of people.”

Since 1987, how many managers/head coaches won the RWC first time around.
The RFU should have sorted itself out top-down from the board level then the administrators then the coaching pool.
Instead it all arse about face...

As said in the article, it is going to be a huge ask on the new coach to turn this around in just over a month.

I thought that Johnson should have been given another year to see if he had learned from it. Maybe then the RFU have a bit of time to get their house in order and they can then take applications for the England job from there (inviting Martin Johnson to reapply).
Hopefully it's not just Martin Johnson that could have learned from the RWC experience and the players have learned to take a bit more personal responsibility and take a bit of the burden off the coach.

At least it was Johnson who left with head held high rather than ignominiously fired.
But i agree they should have done more to keep things in place at least while they go through their own personal board reviews and re-shuffles.

If Engalnd fail miserably in 6 Nations then maybe they will finally realise that it was the clown Andrew that should have gone and no MJ.
But like said before at least he has gone with head held high

Well a stint at club/region level would have been the sensible option and then maybe chuck him in at the deep end.

England are just as likely to do ok in the 6Ns IMO & what would that prove?
I agree MJ has left with his head held high but in all honesty did he really have a choice?

Now that Andrew has nothing to do with the England team they would probably re-instate him..
Still haven't heard a decent reason why he is responsible for so much blame...?

Only the Torygraph could turn a Wales / Shane day into a headline about England. Still personally (English) I'm in tune with Gatland on this one. Maybe MJ will come back in some role, still gas in his tank. Thanks MM for posting, and on Wales' day we have to add big congrats to Shane for giving us (Brits) such wonderful rugby during his illustrious career. Will top level rugby ever see a littl'un that effective again ? Like to think it could yet be so. Well done Shane.
