Boxing's Dirtiest Tricks! Empty Boxing's Dirtiest Tricks!

Post by Daz Fri 11 Mar 2011, 10:11 am

Morning Folks

Which fights have you seen throughout the years where there has been some serious foul play involved?

Some ones I remember or have read about:

Tyson/Holyfield - the infamous ear incident!

Aaron Pryor - Pass me the bottle I mixed!

Margarito - Hand Wraps

Someone once told me that Luis Resto used to take the stuffing out of gloves to give punches the bare knuckle effect.

Also read that there was a rumour that someone (I think Jack Dempsey) had a metal spike in his hand during a fight - can anyone shed more light on this - not sure if it was ever proved though.

Anymore for anymore?

Have a nice weekend chaps!

Daz the Dempsey story is from the Willard fight and is largely discredited. Nat Fleischer who was ringside says the object seen on the floor was a cigar butt and if you watch the fight Dempsey often pushes Willard off with an open glove which obviously would be impossible were he holding a metal bar.

Think the rumour comes from the fact that prior to this fight Willard had always looked fairly durable and given the massive size difference few if any anticipated Jack blowing through him in such style

Panama Lewis (Resto's trainer) removed the padding from his gloves in the fight against Collins. I believe Lewis is still training now.

It was Dempsey vs Willard I believe but very unlikely to be true. There's an article on coxs corner.

Thanks for clearing that up Jeff! thumbsup

Can you imagine if there had been some truth in that story!

Cheers Scott! How can he still be training after admitting to that!

I don't know that he holds a trainers licence or is an official trainer, perhaps not. But have heard he's still involved in gyms and training boxers.

Not really a dirty trick but rather dirty mouth... That guy Mayorga has been on fire regarding Cotto, talking to his mother about smashing him into an early grave etc....... Even i was a bit shocked reading some of the quotes

Dirty tricks though, Bradley/Ward nutting their way to victory... Hatton being allowed to pretty much superslam his opponents... (all home refs)... Galento never actually fought within the rules barring the Louis fight i think (go watch his fight with Nova, not sure there was much going on that was actually legal!)

I think it was Pep vs Saddler that was one of the dirtiest fights on record, someone older than me could probably tell you more about that than I could though.

Thats disgusting from Mayorga Coxy. Don't really need to sink that low these days to sell tickets.

Not a very pleasant character at all.

Galento is a legendary fighter - some stories and quotes from him are hilarious.

I will check out the Nova fight - sounds quality! Cheers!

Panama Lewis mentioned twice in this, was of course Pryors trainer as well for Arguello

You're very welcome, Daz.

Zivic certainly knows how to tell a story. Genuinely funny man.

Not sure they'd come under heading of "tricks" as there was often little/no subtlety involved, but Marciano has to go down as one of the roughest/dirtiest fighters of any era. Forearms and elbows were the order of the day when the Rock laced 'em up!

It was panama lewis that removed the padding from the gloves. He was also Pryors cornerman for the "mixed" water bottle incident too.
