Baseball Hall Of Fame
The Baseball Hall Of Fame has just announced that the Veterans Committee has elected Cubs 3rd baseman of the 60's and 70's, Ron Santo to the 2012 Class.
The full ballot for the Baseball Writers of America to complete includes leftovers from last year's ballot and some worthy, and some not so worthy, newcomers:
Barry Larkin (62% last year, will sure be honoured this time around)
Jack Morris (53% last year - when statistical quality rather than quantity is properly considered, Morris will get in, but maybe not this year.)
Bagwell
Lee Smith
Palmeiro
Trammell
Larry Walker
Juan Gonzalez
Mattingly
McGriff
McGwire
Dale Murphy
Raines
Edgar Martinez
And first-timers headed by the great Bernie Williams
Williams
Salmon
Mueller
Womack
Sierra
Mulholland
Vinny Castilla
Burnitz
Brian Jordan
Javy Lopez
Eric Young
Phil Nevin
Radke
Of the first-timers, I'd be surprised if some of them even received one vote, namely: Womack, Mulholland, Burnitz, Jordan, Young, Nevin and Radke.
And, much as I love Bernie Williams, I'd be surprised to see a first-timer elected.
Larkin and Morris, however, would be worthy inductees to grace gorgeous Cooperstown next summer with the deserving, sadly departed Ron Santo.

if larkin doesn't make it this year, and i dont think its guaranteed, then he will struggle as the nest few years have alot of very big names, and a couple of controversial ones in bonds and clemens

Agred Rich, I just don't think the rookie class is that compelling - Bernie Williams likely one or two good years short. Unfortunately.
Separately, I see the Marlins are under investigation by the Security and Exchange Commission. Overdue.

yeah it is quite a weak year but the voting is usually quite strict and i dont think he will get votes just because of that, it is quite a big jump in votes he needs
its not unheard of for no-one to be elected

I hope Morris gets in, someday.
When would Mike Mussina make the ballot?

Dave,
Mussina retired, I think, at the end of 2009. So 2014 or 2015 I should think. Can't see him getting in though, despite his terrific record of consistency he falls short in some of the favoured statistical categories, not unlike Mattingly and Bernie for that matter.
Morris has his no-hitters and superb pitching in world Series-winning efforts to boost his record and I would also hope that Larkin gets in.

If you could put a guy in the Hall for one game alone, I'd put Morris in for that Game 7 in 1991.
Complete game extra inning shutout when there just was no tomorrow.
I agree Mussina is border line, but after reading Living on the Black, I want him in.

Re: Baseball Hall Of Fame
Mussina will be very borderline Dave, would actually be very surprised if he ever made it. Not because I don't like him, I do, has been a role model for athletes, as an amateur and pro. But the key stat's just aren't strong enough, except perhaps his winning percentage. Because he's the man he is, he retired rather than hang on long enough to pad his stat's to HOF levels.

Re: Baseball Hall Of Fame
Two weeks until election results for 2012 Hall Of Fame induction are published.
I'm still going for Larkin YES, Morris with a very outside chance, no-one else to join Ron Santo who was elected by the Veteran's Committee.
Any other valid claims?

Last call for HOF bets.
Here's offering:
1-4: Larkin
6-4: Morris
5-1: Lee Smith
20-1: The field

Barry Larkin makes it in with 86% of the vote, up from about 62% last year.
But no joy for Morris, Lee Smith, Bagwell, Bernie and the rest.
Still awaiting final voting tabulations.

Re: Baseball Hall Of Fame
Thanks Dave,
Some very good players not getting any love apart from that lot, Bernie, Trammell, Murphy, Mattingley and Lou Whittaker has even disappeared from the ballot.
Craig Biggio and Piazza leading next year's non-steroid crew, Glavine, Maddux and Frank Thomas the year after, so Morris and Bags might have lost their big chance.
