Australia v New Zealand: Second Test, Hobart
First topic message reminder :
Australia v New Zealand, 2nd Test
December 9-13, Bellerive Oval, Hobart
Start time: 10:30 local - 23:30 GMT - 07:30 WST
The Second Test in Hobart affords the visitors a climate and playing surface more familiar to their batsmen, whilst Australia will be looking to better their two match winning streak with an unchanged side that performed well in Brisbane last week.
New Zealand have decided to stick with the same XI too and will be hoping for better performances all round and a vast improvement on their mental approach to this match.
Australia:
1 David Warner, 2 Phillip Hughes, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Ricky Ponting, 5 Michael Clarke (capt), 6 Michael Hussey,
7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Peter Siddle, 9 James Pattinson, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Nathan Lyon.
New Zealand:
1 Martin Guptill, 2 Brendon McCullum, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Ross Taylor (capt), 5 Jesse Ryder, 6 Dean Brownlie,
7 Reece Young (wk), 8 Doug Bracewell, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Chris Martin.

Great Test pitch too, in favour of bowlers, but Warner has shown that if you can graft, you can achieve too,

Oohhh I have just got to read the Aus press tomorrow if Aus lose. Haddin may have a few headaches too leading up to the selections for India.

Congrats Kiwis... and you Laurie especially. What a test match. Thoroughly deserved win for you guys... best of luck for the rest of the summer.
I had to go into town this morning - so saw Hughes' wicket. Then listening to the radio in the car Ricky was still in. On the way back from the site... it was 4 down, then 5... etc. The DRS made this match even more absorbing - amazing tension.
Bracewell was magnificent, Southee good support... some nice clean catches (looking at the replays now). It would have been a travesty for us to snatch that one.
Full marks to Warner for carrying his bat through - but would have given MoM to Bracewell for sure though.

Against Zimbabwe in a one off Test in January. So with this Aus victory and probably a win over Zimbabwe, your boys might actually win two on the trot
Then against SA in March. Back to losing ways

Catching up this morning and looking at that collpase its pretty clear Aussies batting issues gone well beyond Hughes. The lad Warners had a tough break their though.

Re: Australia v New Zealand: Second Test, Hobart
Wowee – Having to sleep through this match has meant waking up and quickly getting an update of tinterweb. First day NZ collapse. Second day Aus collapse and NZ make a bright start only to find on the third day, NZ have collapsed again.
Hope, then reality, hope then reality until the fourth day when I wake up, go to cricinfo and I see the result but the brain (which is a wonderful thing) translates that Australia won by 7 wickets…..then I checked the scoreboards and NZ have won by 7 runs!
Brilliant! Certainly makes up for Perth 02 where we should have won the series (out of luck more than anything) and all the other abject failures over the years. I was 13 when we last beat Australia….
We’re actually looking likely to build a formidable bowling attack for once too. Martin will be phased out with Wagner to come in and with Southee, Bracewell and Boult there’s some potential to do damage there. Just need the batters to stop with the slap ‘n’ giggle crap and play the proper bat for time game….

Wow, didn't expect this.
Very well done to New Zealand and Bracewell in particular, excellent stuff. Australia's batting woes becoming all too frequent, yet another collapse. Good innings from Warner, but without support.

Re: Australia v New Zealand: Second Test, Hobart
What kind of pressure is Haddin under for his place? Hes never been a true top class gloveman but his batting seems to have destered him recently as well. Age isnt exactly on his side.
Is there anyone really pushing him?
Of the top 7 I guess Warner has made his case to be given an extended run, Watson surely walks back into the side, Clarke justifies a place but on recent form who else?
Aside form Marsh who else is there to step in?

Re: Australia v New Zealand: Second Test, Hobart
There's talk of Ed Cowan who has had a run of good form lately... depending on the availability of Watson and Marsh. Then there's Dan Christian (in the squad now) who's had a few good domestic seasons but I feel it would be a stretch for him but he obviously has some support.
However, given the fragility of our side at the moment and the recent precedents having been set with selecting both rookie batsmen and bowlers - nothing would surprise me.
As for Haddin - I think he is safe at the moment and there are no plans to drop him before the 1st Test against India.

Re: Australia v New Zealand: Second Test, Hobart
When NZ lose it´s fair to say they deserve to lose. But when they win it´s equally fair to say they did something special. Bracewell is a well-known cricketing name in NZ but John didn´t do anywhere near anything as special as take 9 wickets against Australia in Australia.
That we won this match without Vettori is an achievement. The pitch didn´t suit his bowling but more times than not Vettori has addd vital runs to NZ´s meagre batting displays.
With our pace bowling line-up invariably we lack depth and so usually have one good performer like Chris Martin or Danny Morrison or one excellent performer like Bond (unfortunately injury ravaged) or Hadlee. I agree that now we at least have two reasonably good bowlers end to end who can apply some pressure.
What we really need to find is a grafter at the top of the order who will not sell his wicket cheaply and can bat out a lot of overs. Surely the McCullum experiment has failed and he must go down the order.
Well done NZ. We´re all quick to rubbish you but when you achieve something of note, then we should take our hats off to you because cricket doesn´t throw up the same talent in NZ as it does with rugby.

Sooner or latr theres not going to be much choice though. What is the cupboard looking like? With the fargility of the top order batting its pretty inevitable they will be looking for a batsman keeper rather thana gloveman who wont disgrace himself at 7 or 8

I think Tim Paine is the incumbent. Judged a better keeper than Haddin anyway and a decent batsman, more classical.

Good effort Kiwis- first win in Oz since 85 is it?...geeez, Hadlee still waving the last hurrah till this.
Well done, thought we were done and dusted so didnt watch it through to the end.
Warner I believe got MOM due to the txt match popularity system they use- playing to the sponsors so that's hardly 'cricket' but who cares...good for the boys to get one finally.

Been a long time, hasn't it, Taylorman.
Good to see you contributing by the way, you should stop by more often!
Ridiculous that Warner got MoM after Bracewell's heroics.
