Charles Spedding overcomes cancer

Great Charles Spedding, Olympic bronze medallist in the marathon in 1984, has come thumbs up at the end of yet another long, tough and demanding race facing an intimidating opponent; cancer. The 58-year-old underwent a seven-month treatment at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital and was told early this month that he was clear of the illness.

"The news was such a relief. The treatment was extremely painful and I lost my hair but the staff in the unit were absolutely brilliant."
