Its a month away, just 31 days to the opening game for Wales and Ireland. The excitement of the start of the tournament is as thrilling as it has ever been. I think we are hoping that both sides will show some of the new talent on display in the HEC given their chances at International level. A mix of experience blended in well to temper the exuberance of youth when it is needed.
How do the teams match up historically?
First ever Ireland vs Wales was at Lansdowne Road, Dublin on the 28th of January 1882.
Ireland nil – 2G, 4T Wales
Try: Evans
Bridie
Clapp
Baker Jones
Con: Lewis (2)
The winning result for Wales was their first ever victory in International Rugby. Since then the two Nations have played for the following results.
117 Played 117
47 Wins 64
64 Losses 47
6 Draws 6
164 Tries 201
85 Conversions 98
131 Penalties 126
21 Drop Goals 33
1227 Points 1353
39.66% Success Rate 54.31%
Last meeting was in the Quarter Finals of the RWC 2011. Wales were victorious in a classic encounter. Both nations fielded exceptionally good teams that had done well in their previous pool matches.
The game previous was in the 2011 Six Nations with another win for Wales, controversial due to the try that should not have been allowed scored by Mike Phillips.

Re: Ireland vs Wales - WELSH TEAM ANNOUNCED AT 11:50 THIS MORNING...!
Ah but sure if old O'Gara wasn't a temperamental old bugger constantly putting his foot in it (and at other times saying exactly what needs to be said - less the rosey spin), he wouldn't have been the player he was. It took a temperamental, stubborn basstarde to come back from the Lions and not only want to go on but to actually improve again (at his particular brand of game that is).
Sometimes - maybe even all the time - it's the demeanor that makes the player. I always seem to have issues with Heaslip - just aspects of his personality that seem to rub me up the wrong way - but who is to say that's not what makes him the player he is?
I like old RoG - and all his ratty, dour, straight-talking ways. There's always a hint of mischief in the gaze when he gives his sermons. He knows people are saying - well, 'bollix'...but carries on regardless. I like that in any humanbeing.
That's not saying anything about the infernal Sexton ROG 'battle' itself btw, which is a different debate - for which Kidney has more responsibility for than O'Gara himself.

???? Are you sure you frequent these pages all that often, Tycroes? Irish fans at each other's throats? It's become as much a classic as the old Welsh/English badger baiting that went on on old 606.

Gorgeous women in Wales? I don't know about you Gibbo but I don't find sheep attractive.....
Sin, Sexton is a good passer besides even if he wasn't it's not rocket science to teach. You give him a weighted ball for a couple of weeks and problem solved.

Anyone who thinks that Sexton starting is the answer to Ireland's attack are living in cloud cocuckoo land. This is Sexton's chance and if he screws up this time*, I don't know what we'll do. You can forget Bowe bagging a few tries, Sexton can't pass off his right side.
*highly likely since he hasn't played for a couple of weeks with an anklke injury and probably will need someone else to do his kicking for him because he won't have been practising (not even getting to his mental capabilities when kicking under pressure).

Seems to be more Irish supporters fighting amongst themselves than with the Welsh. Same as it ever was I suppose.
at this time Kidney seems to be the only IRishman not saying anything to put fuel on the flames.
ROG is a great backup to have.
Other than that I hope that the backline kinks have been worked out. From how Sean Cronin has been playing for Leinster it is possible he could push Best for a place. And Ryan in for DOC and Trimble more than likely for Earls (to centre) being the changes. If Earls gets his running lines right and any open space it could be a fruitful afternoon.

That's another 20 points added to the Welsh score. Tycroes already forced me to put 30 on because man for man the Welsh are better.

Ah well I tend not to look at the irish threads unless theres an Os game against a province coming up or an international. Since that has not been happy reading for me this year Ive avoided looking. I suppse its a bit like Scarlets fans and the rest of Wales.

asls - facts are facts...but then again you and reality are clearly divorced. You dont seem to have learned your lesson in terms of having poorly thought out opinions and then getting whooped each time when the facts are put to you. A sorry case...but keep it up and if you do feel that you got one over on me then "well done you". It is still the case that Marshall wont get in and the reason is because of the NIQ (and four other SHs).
Lol pot, kettle and a dark colour come to mind.
This is a quote from you on the Wolfhounds thread where you are giving the reason that Marshall wasn't picked
"It is a fact that if the person is not first choice for the province for the HC he will not get picked for Ireland. Secondly is that there is an NIQ ahead of him in terms of choice"
So why were Kearney jnr and Archer picked again, you're fact is clearly wrong yet you keep spouting the same old rubbish.
You also ran away from an argument on this thread https://www.606v2.com/t22174p50-mike-ruddock-obe-in-the-frame-for-next-ireland-coach#879266 when I pointed out that you failed to read my post correctly you just scuttled off and hid because you were utterly wrong yet again.

Didn't Ireland have a 80-90% record when ROG was the starting outhalf in Kidney's first season (winning their first 6-7 matches or something).

Maybe they did but then that was 3 years ago,we've moved on Ireland are no longer Grand Slam champions,Munster are no longer Heineken cup champions and RoG is no longer the best OH in Ireland.Kidney had a very impressive first season but the whole undefeated stat is nicely bulked up by the fact the Lions were touring so he never had to play an away match against a big SH team.
I'll listen to that when I get the chance but I'm capable of forming my own opinions and making my own arguments I don't need to pick whatever soundbite happens to suit my argument this week.

The four proud provinces are standing shoulder to shoulder (with Connacht and Ulster standing in between Munster and Leinster to keep them apart).

Never lost one yet Deaglain. Caught a few on the way though.
But ROG is a self-serving anti-team player - when his position is challenged. Its a baby. Real men fight and get on with it. ROG whines. Only for Munster does he shine. Was never great for Ireland. Or the Lions, where real men stand up to be counted and others... well.... They are found out. His style of play and they way we played around him - has held us back for years.
The whole Rugby World knows that. I am not alone in my tabloid-journo opinions.

Ummmmm,
What has happened to this thread?
My prediction,
ROG and Sexton to have a fist fight prior to the game, resulting in them both being injured.
Wales to win by 100...

Ireland still won all their 6Ns matches and beat Argentina and drew with Australia with ROG as outhalf that season - so ROG had a 90%+ winning ratio in the games that he started. Before Sexton was on the scene. And as I've pointed out to you before, at least we were not losing to Scotland and a fairly good record against Wales.
As for the soundbites - ah right, you'd know more than Shane Horgan.

I'll give you some background on the Irish, we will knock 7-bells-of-shoite out of each other - like no other race.
But. When Sunday comes, we are ONE. Its all about putting the Welsh in their rightful place - like we do the English. As is par for the course in the last 10 years. And, to be fair, ye are sounding like them a lot - after the RWC (no offence btw).
Time for a reality-spanking fy ffrind.

A little harsh though when it comes to Ireland he has come across as putting himself before the team on more than one occasion possibly even more so than any other Irish player in memory.
He does have plenty of good qualities though.

I don't know about anyone else, but I love the 606 Annual Irish International Rugby Team Row. It's highly entertaining.

The attitude in Munster might be difficult for you to understand Gibbo. There is no just handing over any jersey - you have to fight tooth and nail for it - makes men out of boys. Sexton failed to win the jersey at Leinster (he got it through injury) - thats why he isn't mentally strong when he has to compete with ROG - he just falls apart.

Yes and in 2003 England won the world cup,so they should still pick Johnson,Dayglo etc. because if you've done it before they must still be the best players.
I'll agree with you losing to Scotland is bad but it's strange that you don't think Deccie has anything to do with Irelands recent misfortunes it's all down to Sexton in your book.
I think RoG was a very good player for Ireland but he's not up to it at the very highest level anymore at least not from the start he can come on and hold his own for 30 minutes but that's it and it's been proven time and again over the last 3 years.I blame our recent poor record on Kidney and his mismanagement of some very good players that's why we have such miserable results no matter which OH has started but the fact remains that what few good results we've managed have all come when Sexton had the 10 shirt and no amount of waffle from you will change that.
I never claimed to know more than Shane Horgan only that I can form my own opinions, but I've seen you claim on another thread that Tony Ward talks rubbish when it comes to outhalves so do you claim you know more than him?

HOnestly Gibbo I thought the welsh couldnt be bettered for bickering and arguing with the tribe next door However I bow to the Irish supremacy at it it must be a celtic trait.
I may even go and hug a scarlets fan.
Now for the good news so you can all start on the welsh again. Dr Bob may be out of saturdays game. Im not sure if there is some sneaky mind games going on with Gatts and Kidney at the moment, Dekkie keeping his options open picking 32 yesterday and Gatland delaying naming a team. Ive seen Roberts training with the team and he looked fine and Howley says one thing but others in teh camp have said somthing else.

He is essential. Love his line-breaking. His power. His endeavour. Loved the way he and BOD just melded for the Lions. Telepathic almost. It was unreal. BOD loved it. Should have come to Leinster. Would have had 2 x HC medals by now. NOT joking.

I will decide during the anthem Sunday if we have a chance of winning or a very good chance of victory.
The redder ROG's cheeks are the chance of Wales winning increases.
