January 17th 2012!
First topic message reminder :
On the 17th Muhummed Ali turns 70 years of age. The most influential sportsman of the century will be celebrating a landmark. I just wondered what 606 v2 will do to recognise the great day. As boxing fans I think it would be a nice touch to make some sort of gesture for the great man.
I suggest, those who can, post an article relating to Ali on whatever they want.
Any suggestions would be very welcomed.

Pele for me too guys, his impact on the current football scene is far greater than Alis on the current boxing scene, on a global sense would have to think Alis influence pales in comparison.

Re: January 17th 2012!
so in summation, Jonesy doesn't like Ali, because Joe Frazier was a bit thin skinned and we're all agreed that politics and boxing don't mix well on a boxing board.
Incidentally, Jonesy, one of the reasons why Ali transcended the sport was he had amazing charisma. Pele on the other hand, wonderful footballer, but all the personality of a dover sole. And if you cut through the hype and bear in mind the teams they played in, any sane individual knows maradona was better... cheating scumbag that he was.
I think

azania.
Your post has been removed.
I spent plenty of time earlier on cleaning up your mess and wiping your backside so that this thread could stay open to the members who wish to discuss the original topic. I then asked, very politely, that everybody leave the racism at the door.
My efforts are clearly worth no more to you than to be treated with open contempt. Fine. Respect is a two way street, and if you don't wish to respect this forum then don't expect me to show you any courtesy, either.
Thus far it's only your post which has been removed. Carry on as you are and it needn't stop at that.

In answer to the OP. Ali anyday. Pele is also an icon but Maradona was a better footballer and arguably more famous at their respective peaks.

Maradona was a better footballer for me although he had the benefit of being from an era where footballers had become more developed an less likley to get chopped down due to the rules

Maradona won the world cup practically single handedly. Pele had a team of greats around him. Put me in the Brazil 1970 tean and I would have won the world cup also.

Re: January 17th 2012!
Hi guys I just returned from work to find my simple thread about 606 v2 boxing marking Ali's 70th, turned into a political hot potato. And why Pele of all people is floating around here is beyond me.
Really I posted this last night and nobody replied so I thought it died a quick death but boy was I wrong. I think out of the 50 add replies TWO people answered the question and suggested a fitting tribute to a man who, like him or not is an icon of the sport we love. Yes he has faults, show me a man who does not? but he carried boxing for many years and has inspired many people of all races, creeds etc to elevate themselves.
After the passing of Frazier I thought a nice gesture on what is a landmark for Ali would be a nice touch as we do not know how long the great man will be with us.

That's just a myth or a lie whatever way you want to look at it. That Argentina side had some very good players like Passarella, Ruggeri, Burruchaga and Valdano. Not the best side to ever win a World cup but certainly not a one man team. Passarella and Ruggeri had amazing tournaments.

Re: January 17th 2012!
Nah, its just everyone else got a big break because everyone tried to kill maradona when he got the ball, leaving more space for everyone else. Kind of like united did with messi in the finals. When they crowded the midfield and let messi run at em they won because he didnt have the sort of back up to make things happen. When they double man marked him he drew players away and if he didnt get in on the action either of the two excellent midfielders pass their way through a struggling defense. And messi had serious back up. argentina had maradona and two solid players who were afforded the luxury of time and space because maradona was unstoppable. Now back to boxing.

well its a lie because they had 11 players on the pitch but the sentiment isn't far off in my view. The players you named were decent internationals nothing more, they weren't the jairzinho et al that Pele had... and you highlighted defenders that had good tournaments, maybe because they had to. My memory of the 86 side was that they were solid and workmanlike and cynical like most argentinian teams down the years. They fluked 78 with home advantage, no standout opposition and possible match fixing... and they won 86 because of maradona.
Given you're not old enough to have seen that world cup live kev, you're obviously a very keen student of the game, so you must have watched these matches more recently than me, but the consensus of opinion from my generation watching at the time was that maradona pretty much carried them. Surprised you see it differently... as a resident north of the border, i'd have thought maradona was your favourite player of all time after hand of god!

from the time of the last post, the little one not sleeping through the night yet shah?
He might be short and chinny, but kev always comes across as a top bloke... likening him to alex salmond, a truly slimey and unpleasant individual, is a tad harsh i feel
