Re: Desert Island Boxers
Ali - for his absolute skill
Hearns - Skill, power, speed and vulnerability. You didn't know what was going to happen next.
Duran - An absolute beast at LW with wonderful and sublime skills which is often overlooked
Robinson - He had it all
Marchiano - I'll need a laugh sometimes.

Re: Desert Island Boxers
Same as Azania except Jofre for Marciano. Its like watching a choreographed scene in real life.
Re: Desert Island Boxers
I'd want exciting fighters to cheer me up.....as the other castaway Meg Ryan might start losing appeal after the umpteenth hump!!!!!
1. Thomas Hearns.............The most exciting Boxer I know..
2. Julian Jackson
3. Matthew saad muhammad...
4. Mike Tyson...
Oh and number 5...that youtube video of that Pakistani lad boogeying to the ring and then getting flattened in the first...

I wouldnt actually mind the Zab Judah Kosta Tszyu knockdown saying that.It never fails to amaze me that double knockdown with a single punch.
The fact that i read in boxing news a while back that Judah feels still that he was okay to carry on cracks me up even more

Re: Desert Island Boxers
Am going to assume there is footage for their whole career even when that isn't the case
Robinson - the best ever enough said
Moore - Greatest number of ko's ever and look at the oppo, most of the BMR, Charles, Marciano, Ali something for everyone
Langford - a guy of 5ft 7 knocking folk from lightweight to heavy silly ,whats not to enjoy
Burley - Did anyone really expect me not to say him
Naz - They always say you never get over your first love.

Re: Desert Island Boxers
If we had all the footage of a guys career I'd say
Ali
Charles
Hearns
John L Sullivan
Langford
But seen as there isn't much of most of those guys I'd have
Ali
Hearns
Barrera
Chacon
Arguello

Sullivan is a good shout JBW, particularly if it includes some or all of those go four rounds and earn a grand exhibitions he used to do, seeing the heavyweight champion of the world smacking around have a go hardmen would be fun.

If that doesn't motivate you to build a raft then nothing will. Although, would imagine that Meg Ryan would beat you to it if Truss's imaginings came to fruition.

I'm not so sure about that. Anyone over the age of 13 that still uses the word 'hump' is clearly a special kinda guy.

Re: Desert Island Boxers
In an ideal world, with pristine quality film available for all :
Ali - as jeff says, who can forget his first love?
Greb - of course.
Jofre
Basilio - never a dull moment
Toss up between Driscoll and Burley for each of whom, as far as I know, there exists footage of only one fight.
In the real world :
Ali
Jofre
Basilio
Hearns
Difficult to narrow it down from so many, but probably Robinson.

Re: Desert Island Boxers
For pure entertainment purposes, I think a quintet of Bobby Chacon, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Victor Galindez (rarely mentioned as one of the best value for money fighters, but featured in some fabulous scraps), Cornelius Boza-Edwards and Thomas Hearns would keep me more than happy. I suppose if I was doing it by a mixture of pure excitement and also my personal favourites who I'd class as my boxing heroes, I'd keep Chacon and Saad, but replace the other three with Ali, Benny Leonard and either Duran or Whitaker.

I forgot Basilio! What a style to keep watching. Not only for entertainment, but also as solid proof that constant perseverance can breed great success.
