Desert island boxing book?
Evening all,
As there are a lot of knowledgeable and well read boxing fans on these pages, what one boxing related book would you take to read over and over if you were stranded on an island and what helped make your choice?
Cheers in advance.

Re: Desert island boxing book?
Picking one is nigh on impossible but if it could be only one would pick Sam Langford Boxing's Greatest Uncrowned Champion. Solely because it is probably the best boxing book I have ever read. If I could cheat I'd take Adam Pollack's series on the early heavyweight champions because they are all massive and would keep me occupied.

On my own on a desert island..sun,sand,silence and the odd native girl popping over from time to time..Sounds great !!!
Wouldn't take a book though...Would just pop over to Rowley's island and borrow his Pollack series when he'd finished..

Probably something like McIlvanney's book that is a collection of different pieces he's written on boxing. Much easier to dip in and out of an re-read. Budd Schulberg's book, Ringside is good in that respect also.

A native girl would have to be odd to pop over to your island, Beefcake.
I'd take McIlvanney On Boxing. Best boxing book I have ever read. He is a great writer, one or two articles notwithstanding, and this book effortlessly takes you back to great fights in a series of essays. The man has a talent for telling the story of great fights without too much hyperbole and sentimentality. There are so many fights covered, from Joe Frazier vs. Muhammad Ali, Eusibio Pedvoza vs. Barry McGuigan, Honeyghan vs. Starling and Tyson vs. Bruno been just some of them. You'd never get bored.

In the Red Corner: A Journey into Cuban Boxing By John Duncan
The story of the greatest amateur boxing nation on earth told against the backdrop of the revolution, culture and politics of Cuba.
A solely sports book would get a bit boring after a while I reckon.
Not much point in stato types taking a book of booking facts as their main goal of showing off their knowledge would be wasted given they would be on their todd.

Probably 'Beyond Glory: Max Schmeling and Joe Louis, And a World on the Brink' by David Margolick. Only read it a few months back, so it's still pretty fresh in my mind, but honestly have never been as impressed across all levels by any boxing book as I was with this one.

If she liked SLAAAAYYYYYEEEERRRRR she'd likely be a fish supremasist mermaid and would have little interest in Dave, who I assume is not a fish.
