606 desert island boxing rucksack.
We've had this before especially on the old beeb but it's always fun.
Okay you're marooned on a desert island like Tom Hanks in Castaway, however you don't have Wilson the baseball to keep you company, you're luckier as a boxing nut you always carry your boxing rucksack.
Which includes a solar powered DVD player with a disc of your favourite 5 fights, you're favourite boxing book and boxing memorabilia ( a fantasy piece you can choose throughout history or something you actually own)
So what 5 fights are included on your disc ?
What book is in your rucksack?
What piece of boxing memorabilia you have? (if none pick any one thing throughout boxing history you'd choose)
And for fun doesn't have to be boxing related, you have enough battery on your Mp3 player to play one song, what is it?
enjoy
Cheers

Frazier-Ali I
Chacon-Limon IV
Bassa-McAuley I
Pryor-Arguello I
Moore-Durelle I
On the island, I also found that someone had mysteriously buried a copy of Leonard-Hearns I, so I watched that too.
Song: at the moment, Turkish Song of the Damned by The Pogues
Boxing book: McIlvanney on Boxing
Memorabilia: Not much use on a desert island, and I'm not sure where I'd put it, but my original fight poster of Frazier-Ali I.

Forgot song and boxing memorabilia.
Only boxing memorabilia I have is the pre Hatton mayweather copy of boxing news.
Song is difficult. Go your own way by fleetwood mac is always there or there abouts. I do change a lot though and I think everlong by foo fighters is the most played song on my I thingy. Special mentions foy love will tear us apart joy division, and ten storey love song stone roses

Re: 606 desert island boxing rucksack.
Tough one, Rodders.
Five fights would probably look something like this; Galindez-Kates I, Chacon-Limon IV, Saad-Lopez II, Bassa-McAuley I, Whitaker-McGirt I (I know, I know, the last one is a wee bit odd, but with four frantic scraps I need to make room for at least one classic 'boxing match', so to speak, and from a technical point of view it's one of the best you'll ever see).
Difficult to pick a single book. Maybe 'Unforgivable Blackness' by Geoffrey Ward as I've just finished re-reading it, if not then probably 'Babyface goes to Hollywood', the McLarnin biography.
I do have one piece of memrabilia which I absolutely adore, for a few reasons. It's an old, tatty and fairly worn out postcard made in the aftermath of the Dempsey-Willard fight in 1919, showing the two of them in action. It's actually signed by Dempsey himself, too. With it, there is also a letter, dated 1946, by a woman who was married to an American soldier. This soldier was, according to the letter, a great fan of Dempsey and had kept this postcard with Jack's signature on it in his pocket right throughout the War, carrying it all over the globe. I'm not sure if he died towards the War's end, or if he just decided to give the picture away, but the letter states that the soldier's wife wants someone else to have the postcard now.
Anyway, it's been looked at by some professional people and it's legitimate; definitely Dempsey's signature, definitely from 1919 and, so it seems, carried all over the world by an American soldier in the War. How it ended up in England, I've no idea, but I love it, not just because I can say I've handled a piece of card that one of the greatest legends of the sport has touched himself, but also because the letter with it really adds to the history and pathos of it.
Song is nearly impossible. 'Four Seasons in one Day' by Crowded House, just because it's in my head right now.

Haha, not going to give you that particular information, Rodders, but will do a boxing memorabilia article and stick some pictures of it in there within the next week or so for anyone who is interested, mate.
I couldn't believe it, either. My old man used to do house clearing - most of the places were absolute dives, but every now and then he'd come across the odd interesting thing here and there. He found this in some drawer at an old council house here in Nottingham which hadn't been lived in for years. Anyway, he kept it quiet, got it checked out and then had the postcard and letter framed and gave them to me as a birthday gift a while back. Best birthday gift I've had, methinks!
I'm a Van Morrison fan too, by the way. Might've gone with 'Sweet Thing' myself, but still, a fine choice!

Re: 606 desert island boxing rucksack.
Bassa v McCauley I
Ali v Foreman
Morales v Barrera I
Hagler v Hearns
Manny v Cotto (my favourite fight of the last few years - Manny's performance blew me away)
Book - captain's already gone for McIlvanney and I can always nip over to his island and steal it when he's not looking so I'll go for Ringside by Schulberg. A collection of short articles would be more likely to bear repeated reading.
Song - Mogwai Fear Satan by Mogwai (just edging out Shine A Light by Spiritualized - JUST!)
Memorabilia - i have Dick Mctaggart's autograph somewhere but would gladly swap it for the ship Harry Greb performed exhibitions on during World War I if anyone has it.

Re: 606 desert island boxing rucksack.
Hmmmm. Fights:
Barrera v Morales 1
Ali v Frazier III
Bowe v Holyfield 1
Duran v Leonard 1
Hagler v Hearns
Book: Not read a plethora of boxing books, probably just about into double figures, but I'd go with Hands of Stone.
Don't own any boxing memorabilia, but I do have a black & gold Italian Stallion dressing gown that I'm rather fond of - I'll take that in case it gets chilly at night!
Song? Impossible choice, but right at this moment I'd go with Let Down by Radiohead for the hopelessly optimistic crescendo finish - and because I saw them live the other week.
Nice thread:)

Ali vs Frazier III
Chacon vs Limon IV
Holyfield vs Tyson I
Lopez vs Alvarez II
Barrera vs Morales I
Carbajal vs Gonzalez I
I know that is six but I have always been rubbish at counting.
Book: McIlvanney on Boxing has to it. It is the one book I always go back to and much like superfly's comment, it is a collection of stories so lends itself more to re-reading than most. I could always steal it after superfly has finished reading his (already) stolen copy from the Captain so in that case I would take John L Sullivan and his America. Great book and John L was one crazy character.
Song: Rainy night in Soho by The Pogues
Memorabilia: My auntie has a signed pencil drawing of John Conteh on her wall that she bought at a charity auction. I always contemplate stealing it whenever I am back oop North so maybe I would follow through on that. I am a plastic scouser anyway, so stealing comes pretty easily.

Re: 606 desert island boxing rucksack.
A distinctly British slant on my five fights...
Hamed v Robinson
Calzaghe v Mitchell
Bruno v McCall
Hatton v Tszyu
Benn v Eubank II
Book - "Boxing's Greatest Fighters" by Bert R Sugar. A few errors and full of Bert's annoying clichés, but essential reading nevertheless.
Song - I currently have "Lucille" by Kenny Rogers stuck in my head, but that is a bit embarrassing so I'll go for "Heart of Gold" by Force & Styles.
Memorabilia : Don't own any, so I'd take my Everlast heavy bag so I can keep in shape. And yes, round is a shape.

Your choice of music is likely to drive away any wildlife that the island might have, Dave, thereby dooming you to starvation. Surely a spot of ambient whale music would show greater survival instincts?

Re: 606 desert island boxing rucksack.
Fights:
Morales vs Barrera I
Thrilla In Manilla
Aaron Pryor vs Alexis Arguello
Gatti vs Ward I
Hearns v Leonard I
I would probably pick differently in other situations but since im stuck on an island I want all the fights to at least last some fair amount of time!!
Song: No Woman No Cry
Book: I'll be the next to get across to Captains Island and borrow McIlvanney on boxing...in the meantime I think I would probably have a read through 'Facing Ali'...good read to get an insight into just how difficult it was to not only face the man inside the ring but to not allow him the edge outside of it.
Memorabilia - I would have to do the awful thing and steel something of my dad's. He has got a frame which contains 4 gloves all signed belonging to Hagler, Hearns, Leonard & Duran.
The Leonard & Hearns gloves (1 of each) are the gloves they wore in there 2nd encounter (not quite as good as 1st but still) meanwhile the Hagler & Duran gloves are both used gloves from sparring in the build up to their 83 encounter. He managed to get these at a charity auction which was attended by Hagler in 1994 (Think that was the date) unfortunately he didn't meet Duran as he was ill at the time and didn't end up going.
So envious of him for having that...I always think I have a fairly decent collection of stuff until I see that hanging pride of place in the house!! Makes me sick as a parrot!

Mayweather-Gatti
Just to show the difference between a great fighter and an entertaining fighter, the timing and accuracy that Mayweather showed that night was astonishing.
Duran vs Leonard I
Chacon vs Limon IV
Pryor vs Arguello I
Robinson vs LaMotta VI
Not got any boxing memorabilia but would love to own a pair of Roberto Duran shorts, random but we all have weird dreams and aspirations.
Favourite book has to be four kings.
Song would be War Pigs by Black Sabbath or Killing In The Name Of by Rage Against The Machine.

Re: 606 desert island boxing rucksack.
Seeing as Truss hasn't ventured to make a list I'll take the liberty of doing it for him:
Fights:
Curry vs Honey
Don Curry box set
Nigel Benn box set
Lewis winning gold for Canada vs Bowe 1988
Book: The Life & Times of Peter North - or his father-in-laws cheque book.
Memorabilia: The CCTV footage of him decking that pill head in the night club.
Song: Born in the USA
