Grant Holt for England
How on earth can he be ignored! Two more goals today against Wolves!
Second highest English scorer in the Premier League
Why shouldn't he be on the plane?

I'd say he's worth a friendly cap at least. What harm can it do?
He's adapted very well to the Premier League. You never know Olly!

Kevin Davies got one!! Holt is a much better player than people think, a lot of finesse

In all seriousness the one thing that will hold him back is the club he plays his football for. I'd put it this way...If Danny Wellbeck or Daniel Sturridge played for Norwich City and Grant Holt played for Man Utd, City, Chelsea, Arsenal or Spurs I could pretty much guess who's the favourite to board that plane.

He seems to be a late bloomer - he will turn 31 in less than 3 weeks. From what I have seen of him (not much - a few highlights on tv), he didn't appear to have a lot of pace and not wholly lean around the waist. He seemed to have good positioning and was fairly accurate in finishing. I think he should focus on helping to keep Norwich up next year.

He doesn't have pace no, he is well built yes! What he does have is two feet and a good touch and finish. His work rate is commenedable

Teddy Sheringham had no pace whatsoever but played his best football at international level.

Re: Grant Holt for England
With so few English players playing in the premiership I have always felt that the English manager should also look towards the lower divisions to fill the squad where there would otherwise be imbalance, e.g. rather than putting a right winger on the left wing, he should look into the championship or first division if there isn't an adequate English left winger (plus cover) in the premiership. In the past this has been an issue for england - putting square pegs in round holes.
If Holt is among the top scorers in the premiership - then fair enough he should be put into the English squad for the next friendly so that the manager can have a look at him. What a farce it is though if Stuart Pearce take charge of the remaining friendlies and then Redknap is appointed for the Euro's this summer.

Re: Grant Holt for England
Considering overlooked strikers Peter Crouch came up with a cracker against Man City. The goalkeeper kicks the ball out, Crouch heads it to his partner, who heads it back, Crouch controls it with his right foot flicking the ball upwards, he then swivels and volleys it into the top corner of the Man City goal. The ball doesn't touch the ground from being kicked out by the Stoke goalkeeper to ending up in the Man City net.
Apparently one of the issues with Crouch is that because of his size, referees tend to award fouls against him when he challenges for the ball.

Yes I heard about Crouch but he has great feet but weirdly is poor in the air!
Holt scored another good finish today, his first is very well taken! Also his gola against Man Utd a couple weeks back was top draw

Yes, lovely first goal. Neat assist as well from one of Woking's finest - Simeon Jackson. Doubt that Jackson will be on the Euros plane though!ollyrules wrote:

This is nothing. Go on the Darts boards and read A-Darts posts. You can give me a pound for every time you read the word Chizzy. Now that is a man crush.

Re: Grant Holt for England
he is borderline at the moment, IMO it depends if rooney goes or not..
i dont think rooney should go as he is banned for most of group stage..even if we get through dosent matter, if someone comes in for rooney and plays better he will get dropped for him which is a joke..
so
IMO
if rooney was going i think these would be the strikers going
rooney
wellbeck
sturridge
Bent
Crouch
if rooney dosent go then i would take holt.

Re: Grant Holt for England
I can't understand why Crouch isn't one on the first names on the England teamsheet. 22 international goals should speak for itself. In terms of goals/ minutes Crouch is way ahead of most.
What I like most about Crouch playing for England is he gets scrappy goals/ tap ins and that's what England needs.
Crouch was one of the few players that came out of the 2006 World Cup with any credit.

What's the point in putting some unproven fat old duffer even in the squad?? Maybe a friendly run-out as a pat on the back, well done for a decent season. But that's it.

To be fair he's the second highest English goalscorer in the league this year, joint with Sturridge, only behind Rooney. Welbeck and Crouch haven't scored as many playing for better sides.

Feck Holt, the biggest crime here is how Hoolahan won't get into the Irish squad! For feic sake he is that Norwich team.

Re: Grant Holt for England
Holty is an awful nickname. I would consider taking Holt in the squad but once again I would have to say England would have to change thier style of play to accomodate him. He isn't good enough to be that kind of guy. He is playing well though, kind of the old school forward, tough as nails, good header and a decent strike of a ball.
Hoolahan is the best player in that team.

I agree with you Thomond that Holt doesn't fit the England mould but Lawro was just so disrespectful it was unreal.
Hoolahan is one of the best but when he isn't firing he can be frustrating

I've been impressed with Holt this season and would like to see him given a friendly to see how he does
Gary Hooper is another, I know he plays in the SPL but if strikers gain confidence from goals scored then Hooper has it by the bucketload

Re: Grant Holt for England
If you're looking to take a big man up front then it has to be Crouch, may not have an outstanding scoring record this year but unlike Holt you know exactly what to expect from him at international level. For me players like Sturridge and Welbeck offer more to a team than Holt does and have a necessity for international level and that is pace.

Re: Grant Holt for England
Holt would have the issue crouch did when playing for England, Refs won't stand for people backing and trying to out muscle defenders you do that and it's an immediate FK at international level.

Fed up with all the Holt hating. The English have next to no chance of winning the Euros, so why not take Holt anyway? Can't do any worse than your other forwards (bar Rooney).

Rooney doesnt have blistering pace, Owen didnt for most of his England career, Shearer certainly never did. Van Persie isnt quick. You can be a great striker without pace, (not saying Holt is a great striker by the way but we really do have a dearth if talent right now) its as much about instinct and also how the team is set up.

I can't see Holt in the England team. If you want a target man then Crouch is your man. Other guy like Sturridge and Wellbeck have pace and can score goals. No need for Holt to be in the squad. He's done well but it would be a bit embarrassing for a country like England to turn up at a major tournament with someone like Grant Holt in there squad.

There's a difference between blistering, a turn of pace and slow. None of those mentioned are slow, all have a good turn of pace (Shearer pre-ligament injury) whilst Owen was (again, pre-injury) blisteringly quick. Holt is somewhere between 'slow' and 'turn of pace' and I still can't see how he has any single quality good enough to handle the top of the international stage.

His goalscoring ability in the Premier League, he has scored more goals than Welbeck, Crouch, Carroll and Defoe this year.
