The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Edinburgh
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat. The pub has ventured to Edinburgh, as the team has made their first ever Heineken Cup Semi Final.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Martyn Williams, Shane Williams, Paddy Jackson, Paul O'Connell and Tim Visser.

We have friends who were suggesting that they could organise a prayer meeting for 6pm in a Friday night in that church.
Sure, when it was over they could all hang around for a wee cup of tea.
For about 2 hours!

The church we went to used to be a Presbyterian church, but by the time my parents joined it had become an evangelical church. It was the least typical evangelical church you can imagine. The only time anyone clapped was to wake up the organist.

A bit ironic from the Conchords really, the Presbytarian church in NZ is rather in decline (they've merged with the Methodists in many areas). Growing up I used to attend Methodist services whenever I stayed with my (paternal) grandparents, and Catholic services with my Mum. Confused.com .

That sounds a world apart from my evangelical church experiences in Scotland with my family. It was all clapping, energy, guitars and sheer earnestness. That was about the time I stopped going. I'm too sardonic to embrace that kind of sincere enthusiasm!

Would the Presbyterians be mainly around Dunedin and Otago, with the strong Scottish influence there?

My grandparents' church was a Baptist church and much more like what you describe, Notch. I never felt quite comfortable with all that emoting. I've always really liked the sound (sound is actually the wrong word) of Quaker meetings, where they sit in silence and wait for God to speak to them.

They should put up signs at Quaker meeting houses: 'leave your tambourines at reception.'

Largely yes. Though it's worth noting that Dunedin also (according to Census results) had the largest per-capita population of Jedi (which I suspect has something to do with the high proportion of students in the city attending Otago Uni )
The population divides up roughly as
No religion 1.3m
Anglican 550k
Catholic 510k
Not stated/objected to answering 500k
Presbytarian 401k (insert US pension scheme joke here)
Christian not further defined 190k
Methodist 120k
Hindu 60k
Baptist 55k
Buddhist 52k
Ratana (Maori spiritualist Christianity) 50k
LDS 43k
Islam 36k
"Response outside scope" 30k (aka Jedi - it was an internet joke campaign in 2001 and lingered through to the 2006 Census http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/weekly/aa041601a.htm)

What did ye think of ROG being nominated for the IRUPA player of the year?
Thought it was a load of me bollix personally, far more deserving Munster players should have made the cut.

I think ROG has been rubbish in 2012. He had one or two good matches in the early rounds of Heineken Cup such as the Scarlets games and dropped the two vital matches.
However thats a rubbish call.

It's a political pick man. It's all part of an IRFU conspiracy to brainwash your average Irish punter that ROG is still worth a place in the Irish squad and still Sextons equal .
It should have been O'Connell, Botha, Ryan or Coughlan.

True. Fez is the champion elect anyway so it’s a moot point.
I see the RDS are looking to sell the naming rights of the main arena to raise €17m to upgrade to a 23k seater.
Happy days, couldn’t care less what it’s called, I’ll still call it the RDS and we get a new stand for nout. Seems like a sweet deal to me.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Edinburgh
The stupidest name change was when they did up the Arms Park and decided to call it the Millennium Stadium. Stupid on three counts: one, the name Cardiff Arms Park was known to rugby fans around the world and there's no reason why they couldn't have kept it; two, because the new name only tells you when it was built; and three, the Welsh translation - Stadiwm y Mileniwm - makes Welsh look like Pidgin English.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Edinburgh
Lucky - they had to have Millennium in the title to secuer lottery funding. Technically the old stadium was the National Stadium, Cardiff Arms Park (Cardiff Arms Park still exists and is home to Cardiff RFC)
Could have gone with Stadiwm y Mileniwm, Parc yr Arfau Caerdydd though

4) they didn’t get any money out of it.
Back in the 90’s everything was “millennium”, there’s the millennium bridge in London, there was a millennium clock in Dublin etc.
The Millennium stadium is now iconic though, it’s by far the least naff thing/place named after an arbitrary and inevitable clicking over of the odometer.

Luckless I think it has been excellent in conveying this isnt a rebrand of the old Arms Park but rather a new modern facility in central Cardiff.
Certainly has done no harm to anyone and has gone on to hold four ERC finals, the RWC final and loads of football finals too.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Edinburgh
That's an excellent thought provoker from Matt Williams, but he's wrong. It is by no means a "workable set of laws" and it is not the fault of "interpretation". THE FACT THAT INTERPRETATION IS REQUIRED TO MAKE THEM WORK PROVES THE LAWS ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH ahem
Touch judges did three things - they watched where the ball went out, they looked out for sly punches and foul play, and they watched the offside line for the ref.
Assistant refs are asked to look out for more, but can't now manage the above basics!
Anyway "chercher les regles" is my new motto.

Lucky, nothing (much) was done to the Arms Park. The National Stadium however, is a different matter.
Kiwi, thanks for my 'response' to Penfro

And another thing, Parc Yr Arfau is a Poopie translation. Cardiff Arms Park means the field belonging to the Cardiff Arms pub and strictly speaking should be referred to as The Cardiff Arms' Park. Parc y Tafarn would be far better translation as there is no way you can translate Cardiff Arms as its a name and Parc y Cardiff Arms just sounds silly.
I'm going to lie down.

There is a well know French saying "chercher le femme" - literally find the woman. It means that if there's trouble you can bet it will be female at the root, hence find her and you understand the problem. Or in modern parlance "sex creates issues". I'm just adapting that to Rugby. It's not the players, the refs or the coaches, its the laws. There are too many of t hem and they contra dict each other
