Re: NFL Draft 2012 discussion
Two surprise picks on day one
#16 Seattle Seahawks – Bruce Irvin, West Virginia, DEI honestly wasn’t totally shocked about Irvin going this high, had read rumours of him being high on a number of teams boards as the best pure pass rusher in the draft. Had also heard from someone who I consider very credible that the Chicago Bears were high on him and I would not have been surprised to see them select him at #19 (if he was there), they did end up going DE in Shea McClellin.
I’ll be interested to see exactly how Seattle utilise him in year one and how much playing time he receives. I think some will claim #16 is too early for a pass rush specialist who will likely be situational but with teams spending more time in sub to defend the pass Irvin could easily see the field 60-70% of the time even in a situational role.
His Combine results are very similar to Von Miller’s.
#30 San Francisco 49ers – AJ Jenkins, Illinois, WR
This one was a shock to me as I had not read or heard anything that suggested Jenkins in the 1st was a possibility. I had him in my second group of receivers behind Blackmon, Floyd and Wright (only three WR I gave a 1st round grade). He did have a good Combine and followed it up with good shuttle and 3 cone times at his pro day.
Here are my initial observations on Jenkins which I wrote in the draft prospects thread back in October,
There were other surprises in the 1st round but these are the two which will likely be seen as the biggest shocks.

It’s true that inconsistent QB play at Illinois did hurt his production so perhaps he was flying a bit under the radar because of this. His 3 cone and shuttle would suggest better fluidity and quicker COD in his routes than I observed.WR AJ Jenkins, Illinois, 6'0, 190lbs
Jenkins is a prospect who has been on the rise lately. He has good hands and does a good job plucking the ball away from his body. Shows an ability to feel zone coverage and in the game I watched could have made a couple of big plays if the passes hadn't been overthrown. Shows decent body control and is somewhat elusive after the catch. My biggest concern with Jenkins is that he often looks to be decelerating when making his cuts. I'll have to watch him again but right now i'm neither high nor low on Jenkins.
There were other surprises in the 1st round but these are the two which will likely be seen as the biggest shocks.

Is anybody staying up to watch the draft tonight so they may want the chatbox on? Starts an hour earlier tonight kicking off at 12.

I probably will. Unlike this morning, I don't have to get up early so will probably watch a bit more tonight.Derbyblue wrote:Is anybody staying up to watch the draft tonight so they may want the chatbox on? Starts an hour earlier tonight kicking off at 12.
I still haven't had a chance to have a proper look at the 1st round. Had a quick look this morning. Surprised that the Browns went for Weeden at 22nd. I have read some good reports on AJ Jenkins but didn't see him going at 30th. It will be interesting tonight as there is still quite a few decent players available in the early 2nd round.

Re: NFL Draft 2012 discussion
Interesting draft gossip,
The St. Louis Rams had similar grades on WRs Justin Blackmon and AJ Jenkins.
Seems the 49ers weren't the only team high on Jenkins.
A few notes from Peter King: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/peter_king/04/27/2012.nfl.draft.first.round/index.html
More on AJ Jenkins,

A few notes from Peter King: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/peter_king/04/27/2012.nfl.draft.first.round/index.html
More on AJ Jenkins,
I think, after a conversation with one club official on a team that scouted receivers extensively this draft season, I felt better about the 49er pick of virtually unknown A.J. Jenkins from Illinois at No. 30. "We had him rated ahead of Michael Floyd,'' this club official said. "He didn't have a good quarterback to get him the ball, and he's raw. But he's fast. We liked him a lot.''
Ozzie Newsome when we selected Hightower.I think the team that was plumb out of luck in round one was Baltimore. The Ravens, picking 29th, loved Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower, but the Patriots jumped them and chose Hightower 25th. One of their fallback players was guard Zeitler, who got picked 27th ... and what made that hurt even more is that Zeitler was drafted by division rival Cincinnati.
I think I'll get to a lot more of this in Monday's MMQB column, but I'd like to throw some empathy Mohamed Sanu's way. The Rutgers wide receiver was on the edge of his seat late in the first round, with the Bengals on the clock at No. 27, when his phone rang. The voice on the other end of the phone identified himself as being from the Bengals, and said Cincinnati was about to pick him. Sanu and those in his draft party exploded in excitement, and agent Mike McCartney even tweeted that Sanu was a Bengal. Then Cincinnati picked Zeitler.
"This is a great kid, I guarantee you, and someone played a cruel joke on him,'' McCartney said. "It is unreal that someone would do that, but it happened.'' Sanu told McCartney after the draft not to worry about him, he'd be fine, and some team will draft him and get a good player. McCartney's right. Sanu must be a good kid, to respond to something that hurtful with an attitude so hopeful.

I will be up to watch the second round, as long as there is no bloody power cut tonight!
I read that story about Sanu, that is quite cruel, he must have been crushed to see the actual pick on TV, hopefully he gets drafted tonight

Re: NFL Draft 2012 discussion
no doubt he will, realy looking forward to tonight, the is the deepest draft in a few years, lots of defensive talent, sounds crazy but would'nt mind niners taking jeffery, randle or hill if they fall because moss will be gone after a year and only crabtree, manningham (only 2 year deal), williams and jenkins will still be around and none them are over 6 ft 1

Re: NFL Draft 2012 discussion
Not too unhappy with Quinton Coples.
I spent more time watching Chandler Jones and Melvin Ingram but tbh Coples does give us a lot of versitility and upside. He's completely different from Gholston also. Much more physical.
For tonight i'd like to get a RT and a running back . Bobbie Massie or Isiah Pead perhaps. If Jeffrey or Hill drops a bit its not unlikely we'll take them too.

Re: NFL Draft 2012 discussion
my ideal picks for titans tonight would be for them to get a center and the bpa for defensive line or secondary. The vikings need to go bpa at wr or cb or even guard. I hope the niners get a running back and a shock pick, they are good enough at every position to take a luxury pick

See the Browns continuing with drafting Offense unless there's really good value somewhere, but should be a WR and a RT.

It's been suggested that there might be a run of WRs at the top of the 2nd round.
Stephen Hill
Mo Sanu, #2WR, move the chains type
rumours of Brian Quick possibly going to the Rams or Jaguars, small school guy

Re: NFL Draft 2012 discussion
Randle is intriguing, size at 6'3, 210lbs and ran a 4.43 40 at his pro day, but would be risky that high based off of limited tape, similar type of projection as Stephen Hill. I wouldn't touch Jeffery that high. I like TY Hilton but teams might not like the idea of taking a slot guy at the top of the 2nd round.niner wrote:jeffery and randle should go high but wouldn't be shocked to see givens or hilton going in the 2nd either if not 3rd

Re: NFL Draft 2012 discussion
Undoubted winners of day 2 for me were the Giants and Rams. Giants picked up Reuben Randle with the last pick of the second round, then got Jayron Hosely with the same spot in the third. Randle in particular was great value considering many had him mocked late in round 1, Hosely gives them another decent playmaking corner with a lot of potential. I love the Rams picks too, a big receiving target in Quick, 2 cornerbacks with a lot of potential and a speedy RB.
Talking of the Rams, do they know have the most headcase secondary in the league? Cortland Finnegan, Janoris Jenkins and Trumaine Johnson

After being very impressed by the Pats first round I was a bit baffled by the second and third round selections. Both players were not the best players available at that position at that point and if I'm honest we still have huge holes in the secondary

The niners added speed and versatility and i love the lamichael james pick, really hope he can be our sproles type gadget player
im happy with the vikings draft, they have 3 guys who can make an impact straight away, smith will start, kalil can be elite and robinson fits the zone scheme well
The titans draft is a mixed bag, love the wright pick, not too excited about zach brown but love getting mike martin in the 3rd.

I agree with the Titans stuffs, quite dissapointed we didn't take Konz in the 2nd, think he will have made more an impact than Brown who I don't think is a 3 down LB for us. On the positive we are now very young at LB with Brown, McCarthy and Ayers, who could grow together to make one of the better LB corps in the league. Don't know much about Mike Martin but its a position of need so if he becomes a starter then probably a good pick.

I think it's hard to say they weren't BPA as that can be different for pretty much everyone, they may have really impressed during the predraft interviews and visits. Not heard of the safety but pretty sure Bequette was a 3rd round prospect.ollyrules wrote:After being very impressed by the Pats first round I was a bit baffled by the second and third round selections. Having to trust the Front Office on the pick of the DT out of Cincinnati (forgotten his name) being better than everyone seems to have had the guy ranked, Schwartz will be good for the RT spot on the o-line so that's sorted still the big need of a receiver but they've got 7 picks to find one in the final 4 rounds.

Well I do trust Belichek and his eye for a player but over recent years we have picked up some questionable prospects and the safety seems like another one. Just think that after a very good first round we have failed to address needs in the second. If we wanted a DE in the third round why did we pass on Vinny Curry in the Second round?

im a michigan fan so have seen mike martin quite a bit, at worst he can bring really good depth but i think he can make an impact because he can play a number of positions. I suppose brown replacing witherspoon makes the titans defense very young, i think bar the 2 safeties, wimbley is the oldest at 28

Derek Wolfe is the guy, if its any consolation he was Mel Kiper's man crush for the past month or so! He was constantly bringing him up when talking about possible later round studs. Not sure if Kiper's opinion means much though

Jets wise i'm happy with Stephen Hill because if you want to have a run based offence you'll need to stretch the field or at least threaten for it. He has big play ability too.
Demorio Davis will help add youth to our lb corps.
i'd like to see a developmental safety and a small quick rb selected today.

niners just got 2013 3rd rounder and a 6th for their 4th and we also traded back for another 6th next year
overall for the niners third round pick, through the 3 trades that have taken place, they have gotten a 3rd, a 4th and 3 6 rounders, great business

4th round highlights:-
The Dolphins take Lamar Miller in the 4th round. That looks a very good pick considering many had him rated much higher.
The Redskins have added Kirk Cousins as back up to RG3.
The Seahawks has snapped up RB Robert Turbin.
Arizona had drafted Bobby Massie with the 112 pick. He's the highest rated player to go in the 4th round so far and adds to some solid other picks by the Cardinals.
Bengals get Orson Charles, the Saints pick Nick Toon, the Eagles add Brandon Boykin, the Texans draft Jared Crick.

Re: NFL Draft 2012 discussion
The Bengals (Kirkpatrick, Zeitler,Still, Sanu & Orson Charles) , Eagles (Cox, Kendricks, Curry & Foles) Colts (Luck, Fleener, Dwayne Allen & Hilton) have had pretty good drafts so far. The Jets done well getting Coples and Hill with their first two picks while the likes of the Steelers, Packers and Patriots have added some pretty solid players.
The Dolphins have added some interesting players in Tannehill, Martin, Vernon, Egnew and Miller.
The 49ers have just pick Joe Looney.

Considering the Colts are supposed to be moving to a 3-4 defence, I am a bit surprised they haven't taken any defensive players, mainly a nose tackle or defensive end

so they traded up for a guard in the 5th last year and traded up for one in the 4th this year, will be good competition

Re: NFL Draft 2012 discussion
Yeah TheBrownTown is right I meant John Hughes who Cleveland drafted in the 3rd even though it isn't a need compared to WR (though that has been "sorted" since). I haven't heard of either Travis Benjamin or James Michael-Johnson but WR was a need and depth at LB due to D'Qwell Jackson's injury issues (maybe an OLB would have been better though), and they added depth at Guard in the 5th.TheBrownTown wrote:No he means the other DT out of Cincinnati John Hughes that browns picked, Wolfe went to the Broncos in round 2bambamwillis wrote:Derek Wolfe is the guy, if its any consolation he was Mel Kiper's man crush for the past month or so! Another benefit of him for the Jets is that because he was at Georgia Tech who run the triple option offense he's very good blocking the run.Captain Charisma wrote:Jets wise i'm happy with Stephen Hill because if you want to have a run based offence you'll need to stretch the field or at least threaten for it. Hope everyone is going to look out for how Jack Crawford out of Penn State (now a Raider) does in the league as he's from the UK.
Patriots did well trading Green Bay their 5th rounder back to them for a 6th and two 7ths.

Terrance Ganaway is a nice later round pick for the New York Jets. And they have just added Robert Griffin...?
The Patriots have taken the gamble on Alfonzo Dennard in the 7th round.

Bit unsure on the Browns draft currently, 2 DT's which wasn't really a need and 2 MLB's after D'Qwell Jackson's best year at the position, but just the 1 WR which was a need.
