Shame if he did so soon after the WC. Could be another Russell Coutts palava.

Lancaster went out to SA this weekend I thought to meet Smith as he was there on SXV duty (?). He would not be available till September - so a temporary appointment would need to be made for the tour to SA - Brian Ashton keeps being mentioned.

Does he? I saw Ashton mentioned once, which he dismissed in an article, and since then Alex King and Mike Catt are the names that I've seen coming up.

Please god let it be Smith. Not only does he know his stuff, he's also the type of personality to fit in with the coaching set up, i.e. full of ideas and not afraid to express them. That was the problem with Brian Smith, when he was constantly ignored in favour of defence and forwards.

is the attack coach gonna look after the defence as well?or do we need another coach for that,or will lancaster do it himself?

I'd presume Lancaster will do it himself sickofwendy. He obviously organised it with Farrell last time so would continue with that template. If defence became an issue he might look to bring somebody in.

Apparently Lancaster is going to talk to Mike Catt this week about an interim appointment.

Re: England Attack coach - any news???
When he was still hoping on Farrell he said he'd want another coach due to the squad size of 40. so we should be seeing two more, at least for the SA tour.

I don't know if he's been linked but Dave Ellis (ex France defence coach) has said hes very keen on working with England in the past.

apparently, apparently the toryograph said ashton, it said mallet, farell will coach england, apparently apparently
no one wants to coach us, everyone hates us.
It wasnt enough for Graham Henry to win the rwc and reject us as a coaching option after calling us "world champions at wasting talent".
He has just called us "smarmy, arrogant and a shambles"

graham henry has a chip on his shoulder when it comes to england cos we nearly ruined his reputation as a coach when we regularly steamrolled over his welsh sides.kiwis dont like losing and he lost big time.

Wayne Smith was acting as AB's defence and counter attack coach at the world cup. And he's looking after the Chiefs' defence now.mawhis wrote:does anyone know who is in the frame as defence coach?

I'm not sure what this post means. That WS is in the frame ? Or is not because he's under contract?
Or what?
Fact is everyone hates us and no one wants to coach us.

Sorry, typed that in a hurry before a meeting. I was suggesting Smith has pretty good defence credentials as well as attack & backs. And after the 1st week in August ... (SuperXV final is Aug 4th)

It will be disaster mistake from England to take Wayne Smith. He was no good as all blacks coach and the weakest link for world cup new zeeland. Look at the backs for the world cup all blacks. It was shambals. Everyone play out of there position and getting worse and worst as they went on. Notice no one else pick him up, so sometimes the RFU so stupid will go in and paying all kinds of money and getting just magic beans.

I'm sorry anotherworldofpain but I can only assume this is a wind up. Anyone who has any knowledge of rugby considers Wayne Smith as one of the greatest coaches around. Any international side would jump at the chance to have him on their coaching team.

WS is back line coach for the Waikato chiefs in the s15 this year. The chiefs are perennial underachievers but are on top of the table at the mo. Much credit must go to him. Think you guys would be happy with the result if you got him. We wouldn't

Sok EBOP never underestimate the RFU's ability to dither/flake about/mince around and generally lose momentum on any potential deal to positivley further English Rugby!

Because the rest of the world haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaates us.
We are the number one side that every player ever interviewed says he wants to beat.
In summary the rest of the world says...
We are arrogant.
We never score any tries, relying instead on penalty kicks and drop goals.
We're not very good.
We're boring.
We waste what little talent we have.
We behave loutishly off the field.
We cheat.
And anything any one of our players or coaches do on or off the field is duck shoved into one of the above classifications.
I suggest that we all just get used to it because it shows no signs of changing. Ever.

According to NZ Media Wayne Smith is considering a 3 year contact from next year until after .2015 .He currently has a 2 years contract with the Chiefs but has a getout clause after this Season. Then He maybe looking at a term as AllBlacks Coach. If he accepts that is a boost for England as he is considered among the best attack coaches in the game[if not THE best].

Re: England Attack coach - any news???
Overall I think there should be a paradigm shift in attacking play for many teams.
Backline players need a revitalised plan to break down modern defensive systems.
I think as a former prop, I would bring many new things to attacking play.

I know that England, Munster and Ireland (at a minimum) are all looking for attack coaches at the minute.
They will become a prized asset in this age of rock solid defence.

All this chat about Wayne Smith is for nothing. He will surely turn us down as others have before him.
We will be left scraping the barrell for someone, anyone, bound to be english though because it seems that no foreign coach will actually condescend to help us out. They're all full of advice but wont take up a position. Oh nooooo. They all prefer to sit like Graham Henry on the outside and throw stones at us.

If, (and i categorically deny that it is) for argument's sake that was my sacred modus operandi for supporting and bringing the good spirits to England in the best way possible then i would never ever admit to it. To admit to it would break the spell.

Re: England Attack coach - any news???
The Rugby Blog tweeted last night that Catt is to be confirmed in the interim within the next week (source: The Telegraph).
My thought of the interim nature of this appointment is that we are holding out for Smith in September, which would be a fantastic appointment. Catt should do well in the meanwhile though, any chance he'll do so well he gets the gig full-time?
