Springbok squad announced.
Springbok squad for the English tour has been announced.
Forwards :
Coenie Oosthuizen,
Tendai Mtawarira,
Jannie du Plessis,
Werner Kruger,
Bismarck du Plessis,
Chiliboy Ralepelle,
Flip van der Merwe,
Eben Etzebeth,
Juandré Kruger,
Marcell Coetzee,
Keegan Daniel,
Willem Alberts,
Pierre Spies,
Ryan Kankowski,
Adriaan Strauss,
Jaques Potgieter
Backs :
Francois Hougaard,
Jano Vermaak,
Morné Steyn,
Pat Lambie,
Elton Jantjies,
Wynand Olivier,
Jean de Villiers,
JJ Engelbrecht,
Bryan Habana,
Bjorn Basson,
JP Pietersen,
Lwazi Mvovo,
Zane Kirchner,
Ruan Pienaar,
Frans Steyn
Those that should feel unlucky.
Gio Aplon
Juan de Jongh
Those that should feel lucky to be there.
Wynanad Olivier
Can't believe Wynand Olivier get selected ahead of Juan de Jongh.
Couple of good youngsters in there, Coenie Oosthuizen, Marcell Coetzee, JJ Engelbrecht.
Not happy about Potgieter and Jantjies, I don't believe they are good enough. If you consider the reasons why Meyer has not called upon de Jongh and Aplon, it can only be their size, then why is Jantjies there?

Sorry bud, I just don't like him.
I am happy though that he didn't select Brussow, he hasn't been great at all this season.

Nothing too surprising given what we know about Meyer.
Don't think that is making the best use of the resources available to him though.

Well obviously he must be doing something right for him to get selected despite being injured for 3 weeks

How is Wynand Olivier in?

how indeed , he must have a lot of dirt on Meyer matter of fact he must have dirt on every single coach to pick him because he's played some 50 tests and never impressed in ONE

Re: Springbok squad announced.
Maisiekind in the squad... does he have comprimising photos of Meyer or something???
Jano Vermaak... hmm, no bias there then... how many minutes does he get? Piet Van Zyl should have got that spot... by a good margin.
Kirchner over Aplon or Joe Pietersen... please
If you don't think there is any bias in the squad just think of the following.
Bulls 13 players
Stormers 3 players
When reserves of the bulls get in over Stormers first choice players... when we've done the double over them and lead the conference you have to ask... what more can some of these boys do???

Really???
Kankowski can't get a start for the Sharks whereas Kolisi is pulling up trees for the Stormers week in week out.
Ruan Pienaar is better than Vermaak.
Olivier is a poor international player and should be nowhere near the squad.
De Jongh should be in as should Aplon.
I suspect that looking at the squad we will see a backline of
Hougaard
Steyn
Habana
Olivier
JDV
Pietersen
Steyn
Which for me is not what would be best for South Africa right now.

15. Aplon
14. Pietersen

1. Mtwarira
2. du Plessis
3. du Plessis
4. van der Merwe

7. Alberts

would be the XV I would select for the 1st test.
I would be amazed if Meyer's selection was anywhere near that.

Re: Springbok squad announced.
If you break it down.
Front row.
Coenie Oosthuizen, Tendai Mtawarira,
Bismarck du Plessis, Adriaan Strauss, Chiliboy Ralepelle
Jannie du Plessis, Werner Kruger,
Why is Chiliboy there, we don't need another hooker, rather an extra prop.
Locks
Flip van der Merwe, Eben Etzebeth, Juandré Kruger
Probably the best available.
Injured players we'll miss: Andries Bekker.
Backrow
Marcell Coetzee, Keegan Daniel,
Willem Alberts, Jaques Potgieter
Pierre Spies, Ryan Kankowski,
Injured players we'll miss: Schalk Burger, Jaques Potgieter, Juan Smith
Half backs
Francois Hougaard, Ruan Pienaar, Jano Vermaak
Why?
Flyhalves.
Morne Steyn, Elton Jantjies,
Meyer will probably not play Lambie at 10.
Midfield.
Wynand Olivier, Jean de Villiers, JJ Engelbrecht, Frans Steyn.
I have no idea how he is going to combine them.
Wings.
Bryan Habana, Bjorn Basson, JP Pietersen, Lwazi Mvovo
I suppose you can't complain about them.
Fullback.
Patrick Lambie, Zane Kirchner
Best available.

Re: Springbok squad announced.
Super rugby is not International rugby. It's hard for a hooker to play as an OS in the loose. For a start you're pretty much tied up come scrum time.
I'm very happy Brussow hasnt been picked, we'll have him if you don't.

Re: Springbok squad announced.
Daniel would be a good choice IMO for starting openside. He has played well this season.
However I think ENG will be looking at a Alberts, Daniel & Spies trio and think.... we can dominate these guys.
Brussow may have had a poor season but he is still bar Daniel the only real openside in contention.
I think Ashley Johnson should be a little disappointed... he is the best cheetahs backrower this year and better than some selected.
I'd say a Haskell, Robshaw & Morgan backrow may have the beating of these guys anyhow. I'd be a little concerned.

Exactly my thoughts. These players are not Burger & Smith.
Its been years since I thought our loosies would get edge on a SA trio but nothing in that squad scares me.
6. Bruss
7. Alberts
8. Spies
Would give us serious issues. Daniel, Kankowski and Coetzee are not particularly great players for me.

Lambie did look a little vunerable at 15... a little bit off the pace.
JP Pietersen is not a centre. Attack is fine... defence is awful. With Tuilagi SA need a good defender... I don't even think JDV is the best choice at 13... in fact I don't know who is now De Jongh was cut.

Re: Springbok squad announced.
looking at the centers im thinking JJ might just be Meyers long term solution to outside center with JDJ out now.
And scrumhalves , i will say while i like FDP and think he should have been called up , the decision to not call him means Hougaard will start guaranteed. The only problem is the gameplan .IF meyer forces him to kick then hougaard will be very ineffective but if he allows him to play his natural run and gun style england could be in trouble

Kankowski has been injured but if fit that guy would walk into most sides. Very talented.
Doesn't really suit SA's style though.. if he was an Aussie/European he'd start every test.

Obviously not, I've seen Coetzee offer little all season. The Stormers 6 (llosi??) is a much brighter prospect imo.

Well I then leave you to your assessment, and will wait for the test seres.

Re: Springbok squad announced.
Problem with Hougaard is that he is a front foot player. He doesn't have the skill set of a test scrum half specialist.... he is really a utility player who can play scrumhalf. Pienaar would be a far better choice... he knows European rugby and is a better scrumhalf (arguably not necessarily a better player mind) than Hougaard.
We showed tonight how he can be put under pressure.
If ENG get a nudge on come scrumtime and in the tight he will have a tough series.

Why is Chilliboy there? Is he really one of the best hookers in SA? If he is it puts our hooking woes into perspective.

You are beginning to sound like a troll
?????? Because my opinion differs to yours?
Add Kankowski into that also. Seem to recall Coetzee nearly getting put in the stands from a Mumm(yes Dean Mumm) hand off a few months back.

Bring it on!!!
If this was in our backyard I'd fancy a 3-0, could go either way at your place though. Whoever wins first test will win 2-1 I think.

No, he shouldn't be there, but then there is the (quota thing he says softly).
