Sick pleasure Empty Sick pleasure

Post by azania Sun 03 Jun 2012, 7:35 pm

I often hear boxing taking pleasure in retiring fighters. Calzaghe scoffs at Lacy and said he finished him off. Froch has said that he has practically retired Bute. Ending their careers often means ending their means to earn a living. I wouldn't take pleasure in that,

By all means, take pleasure and pride in beating them. But not ending their career. It's disturbing.

Perhaps just a macho thing really, a caveman animal feeling of, I'm so much better than you, I've completely destroyed you.

But I think it's more of a "Selling themselves" type of thing, like watch me I can destroy someone brutally. David Haye has been one of the biggest in saying this to sell himself.

Wouldn't read too much into it really.

Even after both boxers have retired?

I think with Calzaghe he probably felt a bit peed off that everyone thought he was going to get battered by Lacy. Nobody gave him a chance before the fight really. Now he's probably like 'yeah I beat him and finished his career, that's how good he was'.

I'm all for boxers being OTT and sometimes idiotic during their careers. As long as it sells and makes headlines, its all good. But when they hang up their gloves, climb back down. It gets boring.

Got to be honest I'm not sure to what you're referring. I've never heard Calzaghe say much about Lacy unless directly asked.

I remember Steve Collins boasting that he finished the careers of Eubank and Benn. Big deal. Both fighters had already been softened up by wars that they had already been in.

It's a legacy thing, calzaghe's best win was lacy and now he's trying to hype it so it's remembered more. To beat someone so that they aren't the same means that they did a real "number" on them

That's probably true. In that case he is also very true. He did finish Lacy as a top class fighter. Very few reecover from that type of beating. What his cornermen were doing allowing it to go that long is beyond me. Even a shell of RJJ beat him.

Yet you started a thread saying how you would like to see certain boxers schooled and sparked out...

i personally think froch said that about bute because he really doesnt want to go to canada for the rematch.

maybe he's not as confident of getting the win over there or he simply wants to move on and face bigger and better opponents. either way, there was a reaosn froh said that about bute. fighters have been beaten far worse than that and come back strong.
