Re: surrey vs Sussex match thread
Thanks for starting a match thread, JimBob. Appreciated as always.
The Viscount looks set to miss out again. Can't see Adams resting one of the other bowlers to accommodate him for such a vital game.
I suspect the last place might be between Wilson and Batty. Tough one to call. Wilson has been in good form for the seconds recently with two centuries and would hopefully give us more batting depth which is something we've needed this season. Batty bowled very well last time out in the Championship when he took a tenfer against Warks. He also brings a gutsy determination to the side which Adams, amongst others, clearly admires.
I would actually choose Wilson. That would be hard on Batty but Kartik is clearly now the number one slow bowler in the team. With the forecast suggesting cold and wet weather for much of the match, I don't think we need a second spinner for this particular game.

Hi JimBob - always a bit of a longshot that Wilson would have played instead of Batty! I've since found out that spinners normally do well at Horsham so maybe the right decision after all although our tail does look long.
Sussex win the toss and put us in.

Re: surrey vs Sussex match thread
I don't really understand Surrey's choice of openers. When one gets older it is the norm to shuffle down the order, rather than expose yourself to the new ball, whilst Roy would surely also be more effective further down. Davies seemed to be doing OK, and paired with de Bruyn or Wilson, could surely give Surrey a more solid start.
Davies (wk), de Bruyn, Roy, Ramprakash, Maynard, Hamilton-Brown (c), Wilson would surely be a more solid batting line-up.
Adams is clearly in the five bowler camp, though with Meaker, Dernbach, Lewis, Kartik/ Batty and the part-timers of de Bruyn and RHB he should surely have enough bowling.

Shelsey - good post. Reflects views of many here and on the 'wallpaper' (official supporters club) website.
Considering Ramps has shown little desire to open throughout his long career, it seems rather odd to expect him to do so now in the twilight of his playing days and particularly when he's been in poor form.
Of those available to us, Davies is probably the best option. However, he's on record as telling the Surrey members last year that it's ''too much'' (or similar) to open and keep wicket in Championship cricket and that he prefers batting at six. Thus, in modern parlance, he's been taking one for the team for a while and generally done OK as you say. However, his role as an opener was never more than a stop gap and I suspect time is now up.
At the current time, we could do a lot worse than ask Hamilton-Brown to open. In the past, he's been rightly criticised for playing every innings in top gear. However, this season, he's displayed far more maturity and good shot selection in amassing several high scores. Burns could soon be the other opening batsman. He's highly regarded at the club, currently opening for and captaining the seconds.
You're right about Adams being in the five bowler camp. He also particularly likes the grit and determination which Batty brings to the side. That often cements his place. I was pretty cynical about the worth of that a couple of seasons ago but, having watched Surrey quite a bit last year, do appreciate it better now. Assuming Kartik is now our number one spinner, I still think on balance Batty should be sacrificed for an extra batsman unless it's clear two slow bowlers are needed for a particular pitch. [And having carefully worked that all out, Batty is presently our top scorer at Horsham! Another example of his grit and determination, I would guess, rather than batting flair.]

BREAKING NEWS
Steve Davies has been called up into the Test squad as cover for Matt Prior who has an eye infection. Considered a precautionary move.
Davies will join up with his England colleagues at Edgbaston tonight. If Prior is ok, Davies will return to Horsham tomorrow. If not, Davies will make his Test debut. Gary Wilson will deputise for Davies in the Championship match.

Take my usual points on Ramps as read.....
Agree on the various comments above about team selection - we are very light on the batting front....
Looks likely that fair chunk of play will be lost tomorrow to rain - but even that probably won't help to save the match.

Re: surrey vs Sussex match thread
I say we should keep options open. Every chance that we will foul up again in the second innings so we need to keep the rain on standby....
On current form Ramps as opener has about as much chance of scoring a half century as a certain other former Surrey player I could think of who went prospecting in the West. And various others such as the Brain are well out of touch....

Re: surrey vs Sussex match thread
With this forecast for the next 2 days: http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2646557 provided Surrey finish the Sussex first innings quickly, it could be an interesting more or less 2 day one innings match. And the result of that - three points for a loss, six for a draw, nineteen for a win could be make or break for both these teams' CC1 status in the longer term.

Re: surrey vs Sussex match thread
greetings all from Sussex! - our local forecast implies that there should be a reasonable amount of play tomorrow and plenty on Saturday so should be a result! It looks like the weather might prevent a result in the lancs Durham match.... As SimonofSurrey says... this could be absolutely key for Surrey's chances of survival.... as everyone has said... batting is the real issue for Surrey at present.... however, I'd hope that they'd do better 2nd time around!

This is unbelieveably bad!
Sussex 302-9. Anyon and Panesar have so far put on over 30 to get Sussex a third batting point.
Kartik and Dernbach have bowled the last 10 overs or so. Surely Meaker should be on?!
