Euro 2012: Day 6 Thread - Page 2 Empty Euro 2012: Day 6 Thread

Post by Duty281 Tue 12 Jun 2012, 8:50 pm

First topic message reminder :

Denmark v Portugal (17:00, ITV 1)
Netherlands v Germany (19:45, BBC 1)

Current Group Standings:

Denmark - 3
Germany - 3
Portugal - 0
Netherlands - 0

Back to the Group of Death we go for Day 6 and what a day in prospect. Firstly, the Danes take on the Portugese. The Danes shock win over Holland gives them a real chance of doing what no thought they could do - make the knock-out stage. In the other corner, Portugal will want to bounce back from the stinging defeat against the Germans whilst fully aware a loss here could end their torunament.

The second game is even better. Netherlands v Germany, a massive rivalry and probably (for the neutral anyway) the highlight of the group phase. A German victory will put them on the brink of qualifying for the knock-out stages and, in the process, potentially dump their rivals out. The Dutch will be looking to turn their country's mood upside down - just like England did at Chaleroi in 2000 - and secure a victory over the enemy. It should be a cracking day, enjoy!

Enjoyed that game, pity Holland couldn't push on and equalise but overall Germany look bloody impressive and favs to win the tournament for me.

Am tempted to go out and buy some lederhosen....

Gutted. But, in fairness, we were beaten by a great team, playing well within themselves. Gomez is deadly.

We are now looking at beating Portugal (no big deal) and getting a better GD, to go through. Obviously need a win for Germany v Denmark. Expected but not sure

Just start the team that finished this one. Robben is a klootsak.

Losing the game v Denmark was the killer.

I don't think Holland are out of this yet.

Germany should beat Denmark, plus I fancy Holland to beat Portugal too."If" that's the case, GD should take care of itself and Holland qualify in 2nd place ?

Just looked at the and the sorting criteria is thus:

Equality of points after the group matches
8.07 If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the
following criteria are applied, in the order given; to determine the rankings:
a) higher number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question;
b) superior goal difference in the matches among the teams in question (if more
than two teams finish equal on points);
c) higher number of goals scored in the matches among the teams in question (if
more than two teams finish equal on points);
d) superior goal difference in all the group matches;
e) higher number of goals scored in all the group matches;
f) position in the UEFA national team coefficient ranking system (see Annex I,
paragraph 1.2.2);
g) fair play conduct of the teams (final tournament);
h) drawing of lots.

So if say Denmark, Portugal and Holland all finish on 3 points, it's results between team first but that wouldn't work as D have beaten H, H would have beaten P and P would have beaten D so then it would broken down into a minileague between the three teams where superior goal difference between the 3 teams would be taken into account (excluding the games against Germany).

Yes Duty, thanks for that.It's bloody complicated though!

"If" my scenario is correct, we still have HOL, POR and DEN on 3 pts each with identical head to head results, thus deciding the "mini league" on GD.

My original scenario was slightly wrong, as Holland may still have to beat Portugal by 2 clear goals (assuming Germany beat Denmark), to quailfy.

I think steam

Good man Duty. Its simple from a Cloggie point of view.We become the team we were, before we came to this comp and we beat Portugal well now. That would be our bit done.

Only problem is, Germany are through now. They will rest players now and I dont blame them. We would too. I just hope they dont weaken their team too much and beat Denmark. Then, Nederland are through by the skin of their teeth. And build again for the knockouts.

If Denmark draw with Germany, its all academical anyway.

We shouldnt be in this position. But we are.

Just finished watching the Dutch TV, post game discussion... So soul-searching and funny. One guy said: "Robben is a disgrace to his country. Send him on a long holiday now" Laugh

We need Dirk Kuit to start the next game. Not a Star speler, but one, who unlike others, will work his bollix off for the team. Committment. That was lacking tonight.

Huntelaar & RVP to start together and VD Vaart also. Then we can take Portugal apart. Thats what Sneijder (our best player by far) reckons too anyay

I still believe its possible. No choice.

Nite lads. All the best to England & Ireland this weekend. Believe! OK

Sneijder at some points was the only Dutch player putting in that extra bit of effort, I think after a poor season he's desperate to have a good European Championships...possibly to put him in a shop window.

Holland through if:
- they beat Portugal by at least a two goal margin and Germany beat Denmark.

Denmark through if:
- they beat Germany
- they draw and Holland beat Portugal
- they lose by a one goal margin and Holland beat Portugal by a one goal margin with Denmark scoring more goals than Portugal (or at least as many, which team is ranked higher?).

Potugal through if:
- they beat Holland and Denmark don't beat Germany 4-3, 5-4, etc. (if Denmark win 3-2 Portugal need three goals or a two goal margin of victory, any other score in Denmark-Germany allied to a Portugal win puts Portugal through).
- they draw with Holland and Denmark don't beat Germany.
- they lose to Holland by a one goal margin and Denmark lose to Germany.

Germany through if:
- they don't lose.
- they lose and Portugal don't beat Holland.
- they lose 2-3 and Portugal beat Holland by a single goal scoring less than 3.
- they lose 3-4, 4-5, etc.

I think this is right Headscratch

Stuart Pearce could have done more in these 2 games than him.
