Themed imaginary XVs
This is utterly pointless and silly. Just a bit of fun whilst I sift through emails.
The idea is to take a theme e.g. superheros then make a 15/22 out of people (or animals or objects) within that theme with a line for each player explaining why you put them there. If the theme fits, you can obviously use real players, but the whole point is that you needn't.
e.g.
15- Iron Man- Great in the air, a maverick with some pace. Not good with others so out of the way here.
14- The Flash- I'm not even going to try and explain this one. Fastest man ever. Maybe weak in defence though?
13- Daredevil- blind but with supertuned senses so it doesn't matter. Can find gaps in any defence with his quick feet. Will never ever buy a dummy.
12- Captain America (C.)- Leader of men, defensive organiser. Huge hits with his enhanced strength. Impenetrable defence.
11- Human Torch- a real flier with pace to burn. Too hot to touch. Insert other fire puns.
10- Superman (k)- Ultimate allrounder and leader.
9- Spideman- great reactions and Spidersense. Nimble to exploit any gaps. Great distribution. Mouthy.
8- Thor- Tall, well built to do the work in the tight. Large work rate. Honest if not clever. Huge hitter, big carrier
7- Batman. Does unseen dirty work with dubious methods. Tough. All-round skill set. Always where he is needed and adapts to overcome any foe
6- Wolverine. Ultimate abrasive "chopper". Indestructible. Hard as nails. Makes the hits and shines even in teams of superstars.
5- Beast- got the power in the tight and the agility to jump in the lineout
4- Mr Fantastic- Untouchable in the lineouts with his stretchy limbs.
3- Thing- powerful and brutal but with some technical expertise.
2- Green Arrow- Great marksman, rarely misses.
1- Incredible Hulk- Uses his brute strength to crush opponents in the scrum and the loose. Aggression and discipline issues
Manager- Professor X. He'd read the opposition like a book. Impact sub- Deadpool. Cheerleader- Invisible woman.

Re: Themed imaginary XVs
Chequered mate, no 23 year old should have this much time or that many email to read.
I'm more than twice your age and for all I know you made half those superheroes up ! (who the f is professor x?) I don't think I know any subject well enough to get 15 of anything (if we were playing 7's I might have a chance). So "I'm out" but I enjoyed the education anyway.

fair enough. I worked a 92 hour week last week so missed a whole week of emails (and as a student union officer I get a fair few) so today, post hangover, has been catching up on those and trying to relearn some medicine after a year of bloody science

I'm 43 and know them all
I might chuck Giantman in at 5. Height and Strength.
Not sure why you would want an invisible cheerleader.
Powergirl has always been the hottest of superheroines.

Not a bad side but I'd probably go for Willem Alberts instead of Wolverine at no 6.

Im a medical student too
Im guessing you just intercalated then.
I don't think I could improve your superhero team, although you will probably lose some points through the boot with superman kicking - he has power, but no accuracy on those kicks.

Evil Villain XV
1. Mr Hyde - A vicious personality, would relish the dark arts of the front row. May go missing for large parts of the game
2. Cyclops - No crossed eyes at lineout time. May lack depth perception
3. Cerberus - Three heads are better than one.
4. Sauron - The enforcer, dangerous around the fridges and an eye for the try line
5. Saruman - Forms a begrudging partnership with 4. Won't give up and has the dominance in the lineout. Rebellious nature.
6. Dr Hannibal Lector - Nobody is getting past him.
7. The Joker - Cunning and insanity to break the law at 7.
8. The Terminator - Unstoppable force at the back of the scrum
9. Moriaty (c) - A cunning and tactical thinker at 9, usually several plays ahead of the opposition. Nullified if the opposition select Holmes, though he also nullifies Holmes.
10. Lex Luthor - Orchestrating his plans from 10. The perfect option to face the opposition 10
11. Loki (k) - The trickster at 11, would sell a dummy better than anyone.
12. The Emperor - Lightning quick hands, forms a solid centreparternership. May lack pace
13. Darth Vader - Would keep the backline in check and be solid in defence. May cause the opposition to choke.
14. Count Dracula - Style on the wing, pace to burn. Cannot carry well in bat form.
15. Lord Voldemort - Lurking in the shadows, will quickly return any loose ball kicked to him. Lacks muscle and may be exposed in the contact area.

Re: Themed imaginary XVs
Well there is a lot of on-field personalities - you would need Cowell to manage them. He not be the best for tactics though, but I guess that can be left to the halfbacks.
Neuroscience must have been pretty interesting, ive been thinking about intercalating - not sure what I would do though, Masters, BSc or Bmedsci.

BSc was interesting but getting back used to essays was hard and the research project could have its bad moments. Overall I reckon it's worth it. At which school are you situated?

I would firstly like to say that you've created a comic book Barbarians team here. Really if you want to do it properly then you have to have a Marvel v DC. My teams for this massive encounter would be:
DC:
1. Bane
2. Etrigan (A human eating deamon. Perfect for the front row)
3. Doomsday (killed superman what more could you want out of a tighthead)
4. Plastic Man (really tall)
5. Elongated man (likewise)
6. Lobo (Devestating tackler and indestructable)
7. Doctor Fate (knows magic. will get ball)
8. Captain Marvel (powerful and fast)
9. The Joker (cheeky blighter, great service from the base)
10. Batman (devious and cunning, can create a gap out of nothing)
11. Flash (Barry Allen)
12. Jon Jonnz the martian manhunter (shapeshifter, will be able to ghost through defence)
13. Green Lantern (well he's green and he can fly...bit like BOD)
14. Flash (Wally West)
15. Superman (nobody better under a high ball)
Marvel
1. Hulk (obviously)
2. Thing (Strong and made of rock)
3. Atlas. Can change mass and strength. Like Adam Jones)
4. Giant Man (Can change size at will. Useful in a lineout)
5. Galactus (literally a god. Eats planets)
6. Captain Britain (super strong and force fields. You can't get past him easily)
7. Spiderman (don't be put off by his slight frame. Easy turnovers without even being at the breakdown)
8. Thor (Hammering runs off the base of the scrum and power at the back of the lineout)
9. Wolverine (feisty and recovers from knocks fast)
10. Iron Man (with his intellect and that suit he should be able to carve a gap)
11. Makkari (super fast and strong. Will take some stopping)
12. Human Torch (will burn his way through defence)
13. Cannonball (impossible to stop apparently. Good quality in a centre)
14. Quicksilver (Superfast and a little bit naughty with it)
15. Silver Surfer (smooth style and extraordinary pace and power.)
Now that would be a match. I think Marvel have the power in the forwards but DC have the edge in the backs. now I can get back to work...

Re: Themed imaginary XVs
Well you would HAVE to have a kids' TV-themed team I think.
1. Perkin Flump (Round, Strong & Northern so won't take any nonsense)
2. Captain Caveman* (Utterly mental in the loose, though there may be discipline issues, especially if you take his club away...)
3. Grape Ape (Big, dependable, a bit thick - so perfect for a Tighthead - just make sure you feed him grapes really)
4. Gordon the Big Engine (You need someone big and powerful in the Engine room - sorry! )
5. Mr Tall from the Mr Men (Epic lineout operator)
6. Bananaman (Heroic, always in the thick of things)
7. Zippy from Rainbow (Agumentative, scrappy, gobby. A perfect 7)
8. Godzilla (He's 30 stories high and strong. Oh, and he breathes fire. What more do you need??!)
9. Dangermouse. (Utterly dependable. May get sidetracked into saving the world)
10. Dick Dastardly (Playmaker - although most of his plans normally go wrong because he tries to cheat...)
11. Zoomer from Chorlton & The Wheelies (He's fast, and wears goggles & a flying helmet. And he's on wheels!)
12. Tucker Jenkins from Grange Hill (Always in a scrap, a bit mischievous but you can rely on him to do the right thing in the end)
13. Timothy Claypole from Rentaghost (Very elusive runner - usually because he disappears. And very difficult to tackle, mainly because he's a ghost)
14. Emu (Seriously - would YOU want to tackle him at full pelt?)
15. Mr Benn (His attention span may wander and it's possible that a random drugs test might be a bit iffy)
* Captain, obviously. Although no-one can ever understand his team talks...

Mr Bounce
Surely Dick Dastardly should be at 7? Cheats even more than McCaw
Also, Zippy sounds more like a scrum half to me.
Anyway, my alternative - the dog breeds XV:
1 - American Pit Bull. Hard as nails, strong and quite athletic
2 - Staffy. Tough, scrappy and a bit mad
3 - Bulldog. Completing my trio of low to the ground front rowers comes the ultimate power-house.
4- Rottweiler. The ultimate enforcer
5- Irish Wolfhound. Tall, very tall.
6- Doberman. Big, aggressive. Particularly sound in defence
7 - Springer spaniel. Not the biggest, but unbeatable at digging for the ball on the ground
8 - Great Dane. Useful extra line-out operator, athletic and rangy
9 - Jack Russell. No explanation needed
10 - Border collie. Like a Welsh 10, combines organisational skills with a good individual running game
11 - Greyhound. Fast, in fact so fast only likely to be beaten by the cheatah playing for the big cat XV.
12 - German Shepherd. An even better defender than Alan 'the clamp' Bateman
13 - Boxer. Tough, strong, deceptively fast. Only problem is he might be a bit possessive of the ball and not pass to teammates.
14 - Lurcher. Quick, agile.
15 - Golden Retriever. Obviously, great at tracking down kicks through.

Re: Themed imaginary XVs
This might undermine my masculinity and probably hasn't been done before, but reaching back into my childhood-
The Disney good guys 15
15- Tarzan (Tarzan, Somewhere on the coast of Africa)- Fleet-flooted, strong with attacking instincts, great coordination to cover the high ball, hard to stop once he gets going. May get caught out of position.
14- Aladdin (Aladdin, KSA)- not big or outrightly pacey, but a genuine guile player with nimble feet, a quick mind and a step. Always one jump ahead of the competition
13- Li Shang (c.) (Mulan, CHI,)- Allrounder and leader, strong and direct but skilled enough to be subtle too.
12- Hercules (Hercules, GRE)- massive boot, fantastic strength in defence and attack, very brave in the tackle and capable of huge hits. A real hero.
11- Lightning McQueen (Cars, USA) - Very, VERY fast, great acceleration and as a car, lots of power too. May lose concentration, not the greatest hands and literally no kicking game.
10- Jack Sparrow (vc., ENG I presume) (Pirates of the Caribbean) - a real maverick, maybe flaky in defence and looks like he might fold under pressure but always comes through and a fantastic and unpredictable playmaker. Improviser extraordinaire.
9- Robin Hood (k., ENG) (Robin Hood)- wily and smart, nimble to exploit gaps, energetic and with fantastic accuracy from all ranges and angles.
8- Sully (Monsters Inc., Monstropolis) Big, powerful carrier, nice but capable of being nasty for his job. Soft hands.
7- Copper (Fox and the Hound, USA)- a real hound, will chase ball on the floor all day and adept and harrying the opponent halfbacks. Unrelenting. Might not play well in the same team as Hood.
6- Simba (The Lion King, SA)- Quick, big, great at hauling down even bigprey players, very physical and awe-inspiring. Has been known to be tackled by a girl, relies on confidence.
5- Kenai (Brother Bear, USA)- a bear is the perfect enforcer. Brutally strong and less fun-loving than Balloo, his closest rival
4- King Louie (The Jungle Book, IND)- not that tall but with a huge reach and good hands and light enough to lift, very good in the lineout especially on opposition ball. Dangerous in the loose, deceptively powerful. Might worry too much about what others think of him. A leader but discipline can still let him down.
3- Mr Incredible (The Incredibles, USA)- very strong in the tight, but also involved in the loose. Very experienced.
2- Quasimodo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame, FR)- hugely strong for his size, low centre of gravity but also agile and quick. When riled up can be unstoppable. Maybe too nice before that. Very strong in the scrum but needs to work on throwing
1- Beast (Beauty and the Beast, FR)- no, not the SA prop. Continues the long-held tradition of powerful French scrummagers. Quick and powerful in the loose, a monster in the scrum. Real temper.
Bench- Dumbo, Pooh Bear, Baloo, Pongo, Peter Pan, John Smith, Dash
Dumbo is big, strong (and capable of flight) but too young to start at this level. Pooh is too lazy and docile but the only other real option at Hooker. Baloo is a less aggressive but brave and strong replacement in the SR, Pongo a like for like replacement for Copper, Peter is great attacking on the front foot but very slight, Smith is an allrounder but has ultimately disappointed in the past and Dash has raw pace but is only, like 5.
That was probably the antithesis of what is typically done in a rugby forum and wasted far more of my day than I thought! Got to do some work now

6- Simba (The Lion King, SA)- Quick, big, great at hauling down even big

Also, Zippy sounds more like a scrum half to me.
Anyway, my alternative - the dog breeds XV:
1 - American Pit Bull. Hard as nails, strong and quite athletic
2 - Staffy. Tough, scrappy and a bit mad
3 - Bulldog. Completing my trio of low to the ground front rowers comes the ultimate power-house.
4- Rottweiler. The ultimate enforcer
5- Irish Wolfhound. Tall, very tall.
6- Doberman. Big, aggressive. Particularly sound in defence
7 - Springer spaniel. Not the biggest, but unbeatable at digging for the ball on the ground
8 - Great Dane. Useful extra line-out operator, athletic and rangy
9 - Jack Russell. No explanation needed
10 - Border collie. Like a Welsh 10, combines organisational skills with a good individual running game
11 - Greyhound. Fast, in fact so fast only likely to be beaten by the cheatah playing for the big cat XV.
12 - German Shepherd. An even better defender than Alan 'the clamp' Bateman
13 - Boxer. Tough, strong, deceptively fast. Only problem is he might be a bit possessive of the ball and not pass to teammates.
14 - Lurcher. Quick, agile.
15 - Golden Retriever. Obviously, great at tracking down kicks through.
Not quite: try a boerbul...it's basically an Afrikaans rottweiler!!
Oh wait, and you have to include a Rhodesian Ridgeback in there somewhere. They were bred to hunt lions (although this is only useful once every four years! )

I think the ridgeback could be bench cover for the back row.
Oh, and just to prove boxers can play a bit

7. Lawyer - Knows how to bend the rules..
8. Farmer - Does the hard work to keep his herd on top

10. Puppeteer - Pulls the strings
11. Magician - Could be worth a hat-trick a match
12. Derby Driver - Loves to crash it up
13. Dentist - Great eye for a gap, with an injection of pace
14. FedEx Man - Always delivers
15. Fisherman - Has the best catch and great lines

Ha, good point about the policeman! Although I suppose I was thinking more of an Irish flanker, I mean, policeman who claims to be upholding the law but that is really just a scam to allow them to get up to no good!

Re: Themed imaginary XVs
I presume the Klingon Bird of Prey is the one with the cloaking device?
Borrowed from Richie McCaw (who, to be fair, bought it second hand from Dean Richards).
Surely though, picking the Borg in the pack is a problem, as it will assimilate the rest of your forwards at the first scrum, and you won't have enough bench cover.
Also, surely the Death Star should be your enforcer lock?
Oh, and Henson is apparently refusing to play unless you pick him at 10

Suburban driveway 15
15 Opel Insignia Very solid but lots of fancy stuff too
14 Nissan Primera Big and deceptively pacey
13 BMW316i Simply the best. What everyone else aspires to
12 Skoda Octavia No frills bruiser.
11 Subaru Imprezza Very elusive at high speed
10 VW Passat Huge boot
9 Mitsubishi EVO 4WD Great handling even in the wet, bit of a poseur
8 Alfa Romeo 159 Fast, big, looks good. Can be iffy in the rain
7 Toyota Prius Covers more ground than any other. Two engines. Never stops (geddit)
6 Volvo S40 No peer in contact
5 Ford SMax Very tall, heavy, real work horse
4 Range Rover sport Huge. Will do serious damage if it hits you
3 Renault Laguna Big, slow, very difficult to reverse
2 Audi TT Looks very pretty when between 1 and 3
1 SAAB 93 Very large, ugly. Appears to do huge amount of work while cruising. Occasional burst of speed.

Game of Thrones XV
(Stop reading if you want to read the books but haven't yet!)
1: Strong Belwas- Hugely powerful, experience in the fighting pits, undefeated. Would be great in the scrum and loose.
2: Euron Crows Eye- Does the dirty work himself and fights dirty like a good old pirate! Missing an eye so lineout could be a bit dodge.
3: Illyrio of Bravos- Big fat lump of a thing. Will lend his weight to the scrum big time. Good fringe defender too!
4: Hodor- Part giant, very strong and obviously tall. Not great communication skills but fiercly loyal.
5: Thommund the Giant- Full giant so good in the lineout and unbelievably strong. Manic aggressive and not much on discipline though.
6: Davos- An unrelenting worker and loyal to a fault. Team player. Smuggling experience.
7: Varys- Can always get what he wants due to his underhand tactics always a step ahead of others. Well used to the dark arts of the ruck.
8: Drogo- Very strong and fierce. An undefeated champion and a leader of thousands can easily get over the gainline.
9: Tyrion- A dwarf. Another who thinks well ahead of the others. Fierce when he wants to be.
10: Littlefinger- The ultimate master of the game of thrones. The puppeteer of the lot. Controls the game with ease and poise.
11: Dardelion- Can't be taken down and seems to Ghost through his enemies would be good coming off his wing.
12: Jon Snow- Fiercely determind, good head on his shoulders tactically and is teak tough, could distribute the ball or take it on himself.
13: Jamie Lannister- Another Undefeated champion who would be great breaking through the centre of any enemy. Missing a hand so may not pass well.
14: Greywind- Need some pace and agility what better than a Direwolf.
15: Daenerys- She has dragons so immediatly wins all high balls and can set everyone on fire too!

Ser Gregor has got to be in that team!! Put him at blindside - much better player than Davos.
Have to say the after match showers would be interesting if Daenerys was in the team!
