England v Italy, Quarter Final, Build up and Match Thread
First topic message reminder :
England v Italy (Sunday 24th June, 19:45 KO, BBC 1)
On the back of good defence, England have notched up 2 wins and a draw, confounding the majority of expectations along the way. The unexpected bonus of topping Group D has given them a game against Italy, not Spain, and England have a glorious chance of reaching their first semi-final in 16 years. Italy haven't really started yet and their sole win was against a poor Ireland team but they did manage an impressive draw against the Spanish. The winners will play Germany.......or maybe Greece.
My prediction: England 1-0 Italy
Come on England!

More excuses for Rooney. He scores against grannies though.

Jennifer1984 wrote:It has to be said that Pirlo showed total class and incredible nerve to take his penalty like he did.
He was the classiest player on the field all night and has surely stuffed all these ludicrous claims that Rooney is world class into a cocked hat. Italy have a quality midfielder, England have a flat track bully who looks good against minnows, but is out of his depth when it comes to the big occasions.
Italy were the better team. England and the ball were total strangers and the only credit we can take from that game was that we never gave up. We scrapped and battled and didn't quit, but there is only so much you can do with heart, organisation and willpower. Sooner or later, a football match comes down to skill and taking penalties is a skill.
When it came down to showing your skill, Pirlo did it in spades.
Congratulations Italy. The better team on the night. The victory was well deserved and Roy Hodgson can now start to focus on qualifying for the next world cup.
Again.
Excellent summary.

Although Ashley Young played poorly I cannot fault his effort. In fact I cannot fault the effort of any of the English players. It was not for want of effort that England lost - it was for want of quality and cohesiveness in the passing.

OK. England defended well. But I love attacking and expansive football. Hoof and chase is not for me. Even Greece tried. A team playing for penalties deserved to get booted out.

I thought Glen Johnson was probably the best player for England, offered a lot of threat going forward, and defended well at the back.

We will never know - England might have been knocked out in the group stage, or could have lost this match 5-2. It is difficult to know. However, with the English players available and at the end of a long season ... who knows whether England could have done better.mystiroakey wrote:does anyone want hogson to stay on- would it have been better for him to have had a bad tourny and redknapp(available as well!!!!) to come in??

All brawn no brains from England tonight, they went out with a wimper, hardly a decent chance created since the opening minutes
There is scoop for optimism though, with Jack Wilshire, Tom Cleverly, Kyle Walker, Daniel Sturridge and Gary Cahill all looking to come into the first team there is a hope for the future

Any suggestion that Roy should go is pure rubbish. He did well to organise us to give us a chance in this tournament. Once he can get his own team he will become more expansive

Anybody who suggests Roy should go is a bit daft in the head frankly.
What did you expect when he took the job 2 weeks before selecting a squad, and half the first team squad is injured.

He wasn't a West Ham reject in the first place. He was bought for 6 million so obviously had potential, scored 7 in 28 in his only season then wanted to go back to Italy due to home sickness, don't listen to that arrogant moron who was on commentary.

Re: England v Italy, Quarter Final, Build up and Match Thread
All the top teams play with two holding midfielders who are always covering yet can play passes that keep the game flowing:
Khedira
Schweinstiger
Busquets
Alonso
De Rossi
Pirlo
Mouthino
Veloso
They then have the playmaker playing just off the striker:
Xavi
Montelivo
Ozil
Ronaldo (To a lasser extent but does play a free role)
England need to adopt this formation if you ask me and they have the players to do this. With Wilshere coming in, Rooney can play in that hole and have Rodwell or whoever in the holding role with Wilshere. No coincidence that Italy, Germany, Spain and Portugal to a lesser extent are all in the last four playing that formation. Its not the be all and end all, juts another component of what it takes to reach the later stages of a major tournament.

England are perhaps in reality about the 12th best team in the world. The one positive of this campaign was the realisation of this by the best manager they've had since venables.
Now will people stop playing 'walk away' by cast, grow up and realise that this QF, is the best England could hope for and a pretty decent result.

Ain't touched a pure cider, sober anyway, since I had my stomach pumped when I was 15 years old when you could get sozzled on a £1.50 bottle of Amberdown down the local park. You don't seem to see that anymore with our youth. The world has gone mad.

Harry is more the medias choice than the peoples. I'd say half of the guys on here aren't remotely bothered that he didn't get the gig.

no olly- I asked a question If anyone thinks it might have been better if hodgson had messed it up and we could have brought someone more long term in.(hogdson is a quick results man with no proof of taking a team any further at all his clubs- because he never stays longer than 2 years)

Olly
no he has a shocking record in building a team and moving them forward. he has an amazing record at producing quick results. if you dont realise that simple fcat then i cant take your view seriously.
Hodgson is england manager and i am patting him on the back. but we need to just start again- roy wont learn on the job - he is very stuck in his ways.
All the same i am behind him big time and i hope he prooves me wrong, but his record suggests england could get stagnant and hodgson could be ripped to shreads 2 years down the line and england have then lost two years of development

But player power has apparently been the England football teams biggest cancer in recent years. And who's to say that those players who tweeted would even be considered by Rednapp but having said that they did that for their own benefit.

And consider Roy is unbeaten as England manager, after playing Italy and France.

I don't think people give the credit Redknapp deserves. Took Portsmouth to an FA cup final triumph (money problems not his fault) went to spurs when they were in dissaray and took them to the champions league for the first time, got them to the 1/4 and losing to Madrid isn't an embarrassment by any stretch. Yes they tailed off towards the end but I do think all the talk about England didn't help. How many times will a side finish 6th and win the champions league? spurs were very unlucky this year. I don't think for the record he could have done much more with this side than Hodgson has already done.

Re: England v Italy, Quarter Final, Build up and Match Thread
i wanted pearce to be given a 15 year contract and to use players under 25 years old. that was my optimon soloution. I didnt want gerrard, terry near this team. obviously there were two of our best performers- but break it down- for what!! they didnt win us anything and they wont in the future
but all the same we cant get rid of hodgson- we have to give him at least a shot at the next world cup(my point was allways about if he didnt perform), due to his results and the fact is england played with passion(that was the only thing i wanted from this tourny)
