Maybe They Should Hand Out Two Wimbledon Trophies?
We all know that Federer walked away with yet another Wimbledon trophy on Sunday by hitting forehands and backhands. How many is that? I think I've lost count. Zzzz... But Murray demonstrated with his emotional response at the end of the match how much he wanted a trophy too. By doing so he won something far more important. He won peoples hearts.
Never mind that the saltire remains unfurled above the All England Club. Never mind that the £100 million that one newspaper suggested would be Murray's in victory remains unbanked. Never mind that in the royal box there was no need for a wrestling match between David Cameron and Alex Salmond to see who could claim him first as theirs. Because Murray won something few had expected: the nation's heart. His reaction in the immediate aftermath of defeat was so warm, generous and unaffected, it utterly undermined those who relish dismissing him as cold, aloof and personality free.

Love is far more important than material objects like shiny gold trophies. Murray perhaps won the real prize. Maybe Wimbledon should recognise this by giving him a trophy too?

I thought Cheryl Cole held the nation's heart?
Sorry but I don't quite see it...he lost a tennis match, and it's not like he was anywhere near winning it. So the message is that if you cry your eyes out you find people's affection? Or is it this country's inbuilt way of supporting the underdog...or knocking people down, then building them up again.
To be honest I thought it was bad timing to interview him immediately....should have done it after the ceremony when he had collected himself and actually said more interesting things than choking into a microphone. Most tennis plays are probably in a similar state after losing slam finals but they don't get microphones shoved into their faces before they've hardly had time to sit down and put their racquet away. It smacked of sensationalistic journalism to me.
Oh...and he did get a trophy...it's called the Runner's Up Plate. And the small matter of £575,000 prize money. Don't feel too sorry for him...

I'd imagine supporting Federer is a bit like supporting Man U in football - at best success would not be fully appreciated given familiarity, at worse its glory hunting.
No doubt he deserved to win, and its not any players fault for being the best, but not following a particular player I get bored of Federed/Nadal/Djokovic winning everything - give someone else a chance!

If only Rafa could have responded in this emotional way when he lost those 7 heartbreaking finals to Djokovic last year maybe his harsh critics would be won over. Instead of sympathy the response was harsh dismissal. Admittedly the press did their best to help by repeatedly prodding him in interviews in an attempt to produce tears. However he couldn't even shed a tear when he lost to Rosol no wonder he can't win peoples hearts.
Djokovic can perhaps be forgiven for not sharing his emotions after losing his chance to hold all 4 slams in the dramatic french open final a few weeks ago. He is young and still has a lot to learn. Djokovic does want to be loved so he should look no further than the outpouring of love in the British press for Murray this morning for the key to how to win it. Murray has at last won over the stony Brithish public. In his long quest to achieve this goal he had the power within him to do it all the time... He also managed to expose Federer as the heartless smug champion and hogger of trophies that he so obviosly has been all along.

Nah, Fed is no stranger to a bit of emotion himself and came across as quite compassionate yesterday. He can't help being so annoyingly talented and winning so much

The most annoying thing about the whole presentation yesterday was Sue Barker's opening question to Roger Federer being about Andy Murray! He's just won a record 7th Wimbledon and all she can ask him about is the runner-up.

I actually think he would have cried in the interview even if he had won the trophy. You just have to look at the ending of the Tsonga match to see he had tears in his eyes then. Although it just shows a bit of what his real character is it surely means he is using a lot of emotional energy at the sharp end of the slams. I was a bit surprised yesterday that he appeared to be running out of steam quite early by his normal standards so think that probably contributed to it. Don't think it will be easy to change that but hopefully he can.
