Who Stole All The Trophies?
Saw this quote from Nadal when asked about the current "dominant" generation. This is just a google mangle of the quote but it was the figures I was interested in rather than an elegant translation...
In the last 34 major had been only one winner out of the top four ranking (Juan Martin del Potro at the U.S. Open 2009), the rest were from Federer, Djokovic, Murray or mine. In the previous 34 had been 18 different winners.
http://www.sinembargo.mx/16-09-2013/755656
Most of us are aware that recently the slam trophies have been shared by just a few players but this prompted me to work out a few percentages. Looking at the last 34 slams
Del Potro won 2.9%
Murray won 5.9%
Djokovic won 17.6%
Federer won 35.3%
Nadal won 38.2%
Therefore during this period Federer and Nadal won nearly three quarters of the trophies on offer and the trio of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic won over 90% of them... In contrast (from the quote as I haven't checked there were 18 different winners from the previous 34 slams) That is a big contrast!
I am aware that this has been discussed before. In fact it has been discussed a lot but I haven't seen the figures given as percentages and thought they made an interesting numerical description

Re: Who Stole All The Trophies?
I take from this that Rafa is the greatest person that has ever lived on this planet. Even with such injury problems he's still just the greatest thing ever. His percentages are higher than anyone's!
That was the aim, right?

It's rather odd that of the last 34 slams Federer has won more of them (13) than Rafa (12), but Rafa has a higher % of them.
Clearly Rafa has literally stolen some!

Re: Who Stole All The Trophies?
lets do the numbers then:
instead of 34 slams which is 8 years and a half lets take 10 years, which is 40 slams and it doesnt change the point. actually I think its better to go back to 2004 when federer exploded.
so it is: 2004-2013 included:
federer 16 - 40%
nadal 13 - 23,5%
djokovic 6 - 15%
murray 2 - 5%
and the other 7,5% is from single slam winners
delpo 1
gaudio 1
safin 1
and 1994-2003 included:
sampras 11 - 27.5%
agassi 7 - 17.5%
kuerten 3 - 7.5%
rafter 2 - 5%
kafelnikov 2- 5%
hewitt 2- 5%
and the other 23,5% is from one single slam winners

Re: Who Stole All The Trophies?
so in last 10 years 78.5% of slams was won by 3 players
in the previous 10 years top 3 winners got 52.5% of the slams
in the previous 10 years top 3 winners got 52.5% of the slams

Oh.... Well I retract my previous Rafa statement then.JuliusHMarx wrote:It's rather odd that of the last 34 slams Federer has won more of them (13) than Rafa (12), but Rafa has a higher % of them.
Clearly Rafa has literally stolen some!
Clearly a completely accidental error from the author, which resulted in Rafa getting a higher percentage.
Ahem...

Re: Who Stole All The Trophies?
Did anyone know that Nadal has won an imperious 100% of the last 1 slams, and Murray a measly 0%...

Re: Who Stole All The Trophies?
the thing is slams have been less shared in the last 10 years, simple as that
19 slam winners in 1994-2003
7 slam winners in 2004-2013
why?
federer is better than sampras, nadal is better than agassi and djokovic is better than kuerten
19 slam winners in 1994-2003
7 slam winners in 2004-2013
why?

Re: Who Stole All The Trophies?
Plus which the lesser ranked players - Ferrer, Tsonga, Berdych are just not viable slam winners. Even JMDP has been so racked by various injuries he can never reach the level required.

In World War 2, the average age of the combat soldier was 26.
In Vietnam, he was 19.

So, who won most trophies, and where are they? Is this a trick question, as I can't find them?

I suspect its a percentage of Slams entered vs Slams won.

What is your evidence for this accusation? I have some doubts myself but if it is true it would certainly shake up my faith a bit. However I just feel that he did get stuck on a cross for the sins of mankind and so I wouldn't begrudge him a few trophies. Actually, I think you could argue he deserves them.LuvSports! wrote:Who stole all the trophies?

Re: Who Stole All The Trophies?
HB - Mate if I could remember I would agree!! Not a big drinker, so I suspect that played a part...Started at 8 AM Saturday morning watching the "Ashes" of rugby SA vs NZ, then I drank in sorrow because we lost, drank up until about 6 AM watching the Floyd Mayweather fight... Then went to play a cricket match (well, support the sober players) against a touring team from England, and drank some more to celebrate the, uh... no result - Bad light stopped play! Monday and Tuesday may go down as the hardest two days Ive ever made it through at work... If I had a more important job, things could have been rough!
