The Apprentice Task 2 - Give Yoof a Chance
Youth scouting
You are the scouting team for Everton and the Ginger Messiah has asked you to identify some up and coming players that may have slipped under the radar of the bigger clubs. He has asked that you provide a report which shortlists 6 players you would recommend to Everton, and then a recommendation of which 3 the club should buy. £15m has been set aside for these purchases.
Moyes would like to point out that Everton are not a rich club who can get £15m easily, so good value players who could quickly challenge for the first team would be looked upon favourably, especially those that could quickly solve some of Everton’s main problem areas.
Please submit your report by 3pm on Friday 20th July
The teams for this task will be:
Olly
OTW
Cherries
Twist
Brahma
Sodhat
Viva
Nando
Nadeem

Before we do a team page, who should be PM?
I vote Viva if he thinks he'll have the time. But as there is a work experience kid with him this week, I'll leave that to him to let us know.

I didn't know we had a new task up, I won't be able to take over as team leader this week as I've got a work experice kid with me. You can tell by the very little posts by me today and yesterday between 9-5.
If you give me something to do ill get on it during the evening.

You did well Viva
I'm looking forward to this next task.
I have done my own exploring and have a shortlist of around 10 to 15 names who appear to be future stars (at Everton's level anyway). They are players who do not feature in this league, nor have there been any rumours linking them to major clubs as far as I can tell.
These are the kind of players that I am expecting to see, so it will be interesting to see how many of my list get selected, or even mentioned by the teams.
So far it is 1!!

Would you like explanations for each player, or literally just a list of the players?

Bull stabbing his own brother over a game, I wonder how CricketFan and Olly will feel about this and more importantly your dad Marky.

How does one go about designing a barn animal?

Is it like the new designer product to have for rich farmers.
You don't have a normal black and white cow - Chav farmers have Burberry patterned cows, posh farmer mums have Cath Kidston style chickens.

Re: The Apprentice Task 2 - Give Yoof a Chance
As Cherries has pulled out, it is clear that he is going to get fired this week.
As it is my last day before a week's holiday, I am also a bit busy, so I suggest you submit as normal, I will have a read through at lunchtime and provide feedback and pick a winner, but we don't worry about the boardroom bit.
I can then get you going on the new task (which is a cracker courtesy on Hero) to be submitted on the Monday I am back at work

I think we should have a firing as well tbh, as cherries has kind of ruined the task by removing himself
Maybe have the boardroom on Monday?

I'm on holiday next week, so any other firing would be today.
In truth, I was probably going to fire Cherries anyway. He has not (through being too busy admittedly) not contributed to either task.

True.
A good performance and a win will still earn you brownie points for future boardrooms, but we will go without the boardroom this week. It kind of suits my workload today to be honest, so I am selfishly going to lean towards it.

Re: The Apprentice Task 2 - Give Yoof a Chance
- Blue Generation Submission:
- Right backs - With Tony Hibbert and Phil Neville both aging, Neville in particular seemingly close to retirement, we feel a right back is a key signing. We feel that they could also work in tandem with a new right winger to give us an excellent right hand side.
First choice - Timothy Chandler
TM Value: £4m
Has just broken into the USA side, and last season became Nuremburg's first choice right back. One of the few bright sparks in a disappointing season for their club where they finished in the bottom half of the table. He can attack and get down the flank, as well as being a strong player who would cope well with the physical side of the premier league. We would expect him to quickly become the club's first choice right back.
Second choice - Adam Matthews
TM Value: £1.8m
Again, had a breakthrough season last season, both for Celtic and Wales, gaining a starting spot for both. He played 27 games in the league and would love the chance to move to Everton. Most players in the Scottish League would make the move to a Premier League club immediately. He has fantastic pace and energy to his game and this would allow him to keep up with the opposing wingers.
Right Midfielders - We have decided to improve this area, because we feel that despite Seamus Coleman and Leon Osman being good players, Everton need a really good winger who can cause havoc down the right side.
First Choice - Nathan Redmond (Age 18)
TM Value: £2.2M
Redmond at 18 is our first choice because he is a very exciting talent. He was in and out of the Birmingham team last season in the Championship making 24 appearances, however he scored 5 goals which is a very good return for a winger. Redmond has bags of pace and skill and can trouble any left back. We would expect him to maybe be an impact sub the first season, however he would really break out soon and make that RM slot his own. He is also a current England Under 19 international. He would jump at the chance to move to a club of Everton's stature and with Birmingham's current financial situation, he would be available at the right price.
Second Choice - Marc Albrighton (Age 22)
TM Value: £4.4M
Albrighton is again another pacy winger who likes to get down the wing and beat the left back. He is our second choice however because despite having Premier League experience, he hasn't really shown his potential regularly enough only making 22 appearances for Aston Villa last season. Also because he is already at a club like Aston Villa, I'm not so sure if he would move to Everton without a lot of money being offered.
Strikers - Jelavic is a great striker who has done well since coming in, but players like Anichebe and Vellios are not good enough and will not score enough goals for Everton, we feel that these strikers would be second in the pecking order, and could play alongside Jelavic or as a lone striker.
First Choice-Jordan Rhodes(22)
Tm Vlaue:3.1m
Jordan is our first choice beacause he is a great young talent. We could help him improve and develop his skills he has a great goal record and we want to bring that to the premer league.
We could give him chances at first team as well as him starting in the near future we want to help him develop and bring his talent to the top flight.
He could all so move to everton as they have a good record of developing young players such as Barines and Fellani who are now wanted by top clubs.
Second Choice-Andre Carrillo
Tm Value:4.8m
Andre is great talent who has showen he can improve and has played well in the portugese league. we want to help him improve his skills
and give he chance in are starting XI in the near future we can help him develop in to a key player. He can all so play as a winger this will help as it shows. He can be moved about and still fight in to a role that suits him.

Re: The Apprentice Task 2 - Give Yoof a Chance
- Everton Wonderkids Submission:
- After studying the Everton squad closely with the rest of the team we decided that the club needed a new Right Back/Winger and a Attacking Midfielder. We looked across the globe for players we scouted South America with players like Lucas Ocampos and Europe with players like Mateo Kovavic but eventually we cut our list down and settled on our best 6 with 3 recommended signings.
3 Suitable but ultimately rejected players
Abel Hernandez
The Uruguayan international has three years of experience in Serie A without seeming to be a regular choice for Palermo and we believed we’d be able to tempt him with a move to the Premier League. He has a solid if unspectacular goalscoring record but despite this there was always the risk that we could get gazumped by a larger club for his signature – and he has been linked with many in the past. With the Olympics coming up in the UK so soon and him being in a much fancied Uruguay squad we may see him next season in the Premier League but I wouldn’t wager Everton would be his first choice destination.
The cost was not prohibitive, and £4.4m for a player of this youth and quality is something that played into his favour but ultimately we have decided he wasn’t quite under the radar enough.
Junior Hoilett
After a very impressive season where he more or less carried Blackburn’s relegation fight he seemed certain to be moving to Germany on a free transfer. However it is now clear that deal has fallen through and he is available. Everton seems like it would be a perfect destination for him, he can play both sides and would be an improvement on any other winger in the squad.
There were two reasons why he didn’t make our recommendation list and the first is down to cost. Although he is ‘free’ in real life, by the rules of the game we would be paying £7.9m for him and that is a massive chunk of the budget we were given, and it compromises us in other areas. The second reason is that he will have a great deal of interest in him and the risk again is that a larger club, or at least a richer club, will come in for him and make an offer that we couldn’t match.
Nathaniel Clyne
A fantastic prospect and a player of some experience in first team football considering the age. He has played at a great level in the Championship for Palace and has interested Premier League clubs on the back of it. Right back is an area that Everton are overdue an improvement at, and Hibbert would be ousted by Clyne in my opinion. He would work excellently in tandem with Baines on the other side with both players having excellent attacking instincts as well as solid defensive ones.
In reality, however, he has completed a transfer to Southampton this week and so he is off the table as far as the game goes. He was very good value for money though and fit the criteria perfectly. C’est la vie.
Our Recommendations
Kyle Naughton - 3.5m
We went for Naughton due to him still being relatively young and having Premier League experience already, He would be available to jump straight into the 1st team and would learn a lot from Neville. Spurs currently have Kyle Walker as their no.1 Right Back so would be open to offers for the young man.

Thomas Ince
Profile
The young winger started his career at Liverpool, he struggled to break into the first team and was loaned out to Notts County where he enjoyed a good spell but it was clear to see that he was above this level. During the 2011/2012 he made a permament switch to Championship side Blackpool. A very impressive season at Blackpool gaining confidence each week and looking better as the season went on, he was vital in Blackpools bid for promotion and scored in the play off final loss against West Ham.

After a long process we decided that Ince was the man we had to go for, he has picked up a very good Footballing education at Liverpool FC and has shown his willingness to learn dropping down a coulple of divisions to learn his trade at Notts on loan. He has shown that he is the player we need at Everton a quick, pacy winger who can play through the centre if we need. He has an eye for goal and is a threat when in the attacking third, I feel that is something we are lacking at Everton.
Omar El Kaddouri - £3.5m
A Belgian U21 international, the 21 year old forward currently plays for Brescia and has been touted for bigger things. He possesses excellent feet, great pace, and can play behind a striker or alongside them.
As Everton already have an out and out goalscorer, we are looking for complements to Jelavic, and El Kaddouri would fit the bill to both provide chances for him, as well as supporting him higher up the field.
In 39 Serie B appearances he has contributed 7 goals, and this is in a Brescia team that is far from the best in their respective league. The hope would be that around better players that Everton can provide, he will realise his ability further and become a key component in the side.
Brescia are a Serie B side, and so it wouldn't beyond the realms of possibility that we could sign him for Everton, and from my reading there is mild interest from Italian sides but nothing concrete enough to suggest he is being traced - I would say he fits the under the radar description well.

Thank you. I will take a look at both submissions and announce a winner. The winners will get to bask in the glory, whilst the losers will get to spend time in a locked, darkened room with Bull and Cherries...

Re: The Apprentice Task 2 - Give Yoof a Chance
Right I have read both reports and again I was impressed with the amount of work that went into them.
You both highlighted RB as an area for improvement, which I totally agree with. At Everton, we do view Coleman as being likely to move back to RB and be our regular there for years, but there is no guarantee he will take to that position like he did to RM, plus we will need competition for him.
Your selections were Chandler and Naughton, and it is very difficult to split them. Naughton have been linked with us in the past, and we even tried to sign Naughton when he went to Spurs, so Moyes is a known admirer. However, it is questionable whether he is"under the radar". Chandler is more of a find, and a good one at that, so well done there
You also both picked the right hand side of midfield/wing as another position, and again I agree. Most Everton supporters would like it to be Donovan to fill this spot, but we cannot wait for him forever and we need to look at other options.
Again it was impossible to split your selections. Both Ince and Redmond have impressed.
Finally, you also both picked a striker, which again I agree completely with as after Jelavic, there isn't much to set your heart racing. Rhodes is a good player and has a lot of potential, but I felt that El kaddouri was his equal and a much more "under the radar" choice. He is a good young attacker, but one that takes a bit more effort to "discover" than Rhodes.
In team Everton wonderkids, that your selection of 6, was really a selection of 3. You gave good reasons to dismiss the other 3, but that surely meant that you shouldn't have included them. Moyes would want a report with "here's 6 players we could get, and here are the 3 I recommend most", not "here's 3 good players you can get and 3 good players you can't". I also felt the dump of statistics was a little unnecessary. Moyes is too busy a man to be having to sift through all of that. A summary would have been sufficient.
I also initially felt both teams got misled by the budget. There did seem to be a bit of "we have spent £5m so that gives us plenty of budget for a striker". I am glad to see in the end that, the money was used wisely. Everton have little money, so performing the task so well and significantly under budget is well received by the management.
Both teams did well again, but there can only be one winner, so after a lot of thought, the winners are....
Team Blue Generation.
I felt your report fulfilled the task brief better than the other team, and I think that although it was close with player selection, yours were more under the radar (I based this on how much did I have to use Google to find out about the player as well as how good they appeared to be).
Well done Team Blue Generation. Commisserations Everton Wonderkids.

Well from what I saw, two of you worked really hard, one of you had a good reason and did what you could, whilst the other didn't really contribute much at all.

Sir Afro Sugar is never wrong
Even though we lost task, and had he not of walked, I would have still said cherries should be fired.

Had he not walked, I wouldn't have been able to fire him as he was carried to a win.

Lover suggests it was consensual.
