TACTICS TBC
General
- Going full strength for the win, no more experimentation! Take advantage of a managerless team, without tactics!
- We want to make sure that we play rugby in the opposition half and force handling errors, where we can attack the scrum and use the boot of Steyn to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Use the physicality of our pack to our advantage, keeping the ball tight in the middle section of the pitch to retain possession and build a platform to attack from. In our third clear to touch and challenge for the ball at lineout.
- Look to interchange 10 and 12 as the situation sees fit. Utilise Hook as a playmaker on the wrap around and Steyn as a physical threat and cannon of a boot.
- Hook and Steyn to ensure we play sensible rugby in the right areas, kicking long for touch in our 22, using the up and under in the centre of the pitch and delicate grubbers in behind centres to chase and force kickable penalties.
- Steyn leads the rush defence, with Louw/Fearns flying up to cramp 10 for time and space and ensuring he takes the ball deep behind the gainline and starving their outside backs of ball.
Forwards
* Franks to target LH in the scrum. Look to draw penalties for Steyn to gain position and points. Look for a yellow card early on.
* Picked a very physical pack to make sure that we defend strongly and smash over the gainline. O'Brien to lead pack from base of scrum making hard yards and setting up the ruck for Louw and Fearns to clear out. SOB to mark opposite 8 in defence to prevent charges from base of scrum
* At the lineout, Muller will lead the calls and look to pressurise oppoistion hooker and compete at every throw
* Louw is a breakdown specialist and will look to stay on his feet at the ruck and slow opposition ball down. Fearns and Lund to guard to the fringes of the ruck
* Use ball carriers of Franks, Louw, Tolufua, O'Brien, Fearns to make hard yards up the pitch and draw defenders into the ruck area, looking to create space around the fringes for Laulala to exploit
Backs
* Dagg given free rein in attack, looking to come into the line either side of Laulala. Laulala to look for the half gap with power and offload (only if on), with the pace of Biggs and Woodburn on their shoulder to make the break
* Hook to take the ball flat on the gainline, drawing defenders and buying time and space for Steyn in the 2nd playmaker role. Steyn not afraid to bosh it up if nothing on and set up the ruck.
* Vary the point of attack with 10/12 interchanging, look to keep it unpredictable on the gainline + difficult to defend against. Use the inside pass with forward runners of Franks, Caldwell, SOB to keep the inside shoulder honest and force the 10 to make tackles.
* Get Laulala on the ball early on and encourage a very pacy back three to run off his shoulder. Only offload if it is on, otherwise, crash it up and use SOB, Fearns, Caldwell to clear out and Louw to secure.
* Banahan is a huge physical threat. Encourage him to run into the 10 channel early on and test Cruden defence and to see SBW fly up and create a gap behind. Eastmond to come on for last 30 mins in a free role, acting as 2nd receiver, popping up wherever to use his pace, step and get more experience

Tactics
We will play a structured game built around our massive ball carriers, the strength of our set piece and getting our lightning backline into space.
- Attack the scrum as a weapon - and call when we can. Look to really get the shove on.
- Use Humphreys' boot to attack our strong lineout with Hanks, Hayes and Scaysbrook. We will relentlessly target the opposition's throws.
- Massive line-breakers right throughout the side that will look to tire down Sale defence.
- Scaysbrook is the man charged with reaching the breakdown first and look to turnover possession. We will always look to attack quickly off turnover ball.
- Box kicks from Barrett and up and unders from Humphreys to give the opposition problems in the air.
Lightning back line to really get the chase on.
- Look to play attacking rugby in the backs, getting the likes of Tatupu, Camcho and Arscott on the ball when we can.
- Our back three are encouraged to do what they do best - counter attacking and running the ball back. If isolated all have good kicking games, but the counter is what we ask them to look for.
- Humphreys to kick all penalites.

Tactics
- James and Wilson are solid technicians and will secure our own feed, to provide first phase possesion for our backs. James will look to put pressure on the Stormers feed.
- With a strong lineout, O'Connell will lead the lineout and use Mumm as a banker ball at the front of the line with POC jumping in the middle. If winning own ball POC will look to cut the lineout to five, to allow Easter to get a chance to run at the defence in open field.
- With the selection of Brussow and Gibson they'll attack breakdowns, their skills will provide another source of possesion from turnovers. Pienaar will be behind the rucks to supply any turnover possesion to our wide men as soon as possible why the defence is in disarray.
- Off any first phase possesion, there will be a strike runner to get over the gainline to provide quick ball whilst the opposition defence is still organising itself.
- Evans and Pienaar will direct traffic and marshall the attacking forces. Pienaar will marshall the forwards and Evans will pull the strings, looking for the runs of Waldlouck and Henson off his shoulder or to allow Wald to release our dangerous roaming back three.
- Pienaar and Evans will kick all points, unless POC dictates we have a dominate set piece at the moment in time.

Tactics
- Play a structured game based on our kicking game and set piece dominance
- Target the scrum and look to really build some confidence and platform here. Big scrummaging front row to come on to continue the dominance.
- Compete on their ball at the lineout - go from turnovers here
- Limit the effect of the Chiefs midfield with big defensive efforts from Bowden and Rougerie. Pocock and Kaino to work their socks off to make tackles too.
- Pin Chiefs back with tactical kicking from James and Bowden. Make them play from their own 22.
- Target turnovers to potential counter attacks, getting the ball wide quickly.
- Cooper, Tuilagi and King to come on and run at tired legs, opening the game up
- Homer to kick all pens within range

TACTICS TBC

16. Shawn Pittman 17. Tom Mercey 18. Tom Lindsay 19. Dean Mumm 20. Chris Hala'ufia 21. Paul Hodgson 22. Steven Shingler 23. Ben Ransom

Re: Summer Cup Round 5
Saints 22-20 Leinster
Saints take the back row battle but leinster gain the edge in front row, can see 2nd rows even. 9-10 to Saints and the centre pairings nullify each other. Wings to Saints which just edges Kearney’s form against Foden to take the win.
Wasps 18-17 Bath
The pack goes to Bath with the front row gaining a big advantage. Can see the breakdown being fairly even. Backs go to Wasps when looking at form and overall the extra bit of quality. Bench just nicks this for Wasps.
Irish 22-25 Chiefs
Front row and 2nd row to Chiefs with Irish taking the back row just. The backs go to the Chiefs with a bit more quality and form. Irish run them close through a very good impact bench.
Ulster 15-18 Sarries
Front row and 2nd row go to Ulster here but Sarries gain momentum in the back row. Half-backs are even and Sarries win this with their dominance in the backs overall.
Quins 19-18 Stormers
Pack goes to Quins taking overall advantage here. Stormers’ half backs and back 3 will pull them back into it but Quins have a little bit more in the centres to hold on.

Re: Summer Cup Round 5
Saints 23 - 22 Leinster
The front row is won by Leinster, but Saints will match them at the lineout and around the park with their edge in the backrow. Saints backline will win it but, the Leinster bench will help keep them in it.
London Wasps 17 - 21 Bath
I can't look past Bath up front. Wasps will live off scraps via Dus and Burger, and from the lineout with Skivs. But any attacking threat will be nullified with Steyn at first reciever. Bath have a much more free-flowing feel to there team. Tactics would've been good from Wasps. But that can be overlooked due to the current situ.
London Irish 22 - 25 Chiefs
A very good contest with the recently crowed S15 champions against Irish. Quite even up front. With Chiefs having some starters on their bench. But with SBW and Cruden they will tear Irish apart. Irish will score some points with their possesion, but Chiefs are razor sharp at the moment.
Ulster 13 - 22 Sarries
The battle of packs is even. Maybe an edge in the lineout to Ulster but that is negated with McCaw and Poff at the breakdown. Pienaar will control things for Ulster but the raw Jackson will be exploited by Hodgson, Allen and Smith. Overall Sarries have a class edge over Ulster, despite the magic of Cave.
Gloucester 23 - 25 Leicester Tigers
Its tough for any team to face the Tigers, but Glos make a good go of it. Tigers will edge the packs, but Glos have a little more of a grizzled look to them. Interesting choices at 12 for each. Not bad players but with both not playing their that regularly, it stunts the flow of the attacking play. Great backlines nonetheless. Glos bench has an edge over the Tigers one and gets a few extra points for them.
Harlequins 19 - 22 Stormers
Packs are even for me. Quins halfbacks will control the game IMO, but Stormers have a much better centre pairing. As I see AAC being more useful in the backthree nowadays. Stormers back three will sneak it for them despite the talented Quins trio. The benches are even but some influential players that help both teams to get some points.

Interesting comparing those to:
https://www.606v2.com/t31663-summer-cup-round-2
All results are the same apart from Stormers and Chiefs games. I doubt they've got better in 3 weeks but perhaps our predictions have been influenced by recent success?
(I voted for a Stormers win!)

Re: Summer Cup Round 5
Real life form always plays a part in predictions. Chiefs are probably the best team on the planet right now so no shame losing to them.

Agree with you pooly. Real life form and real life combinations hold high value in my predictions

It's what the game is based on.
Otherwise we'd all be trying to sign S.Burger and J.Smith as our new flankers...

Yeah it's why I'd like Mitchell to get back to fitness (gamble I think will pay off) and can't wait to see Kelly Brown start the season off!

Re: Summer Cup Round 5
I think even if you think you don't do it, recent form makes up a big part of predo's.
If a certain player is on fire but not a great player as in world class he can still stick out in predo's for you.
It's what makes this type of game slightly different than the Euro type league as we get to the Prem players week in week out
