Re: Olympics Day 15 thread!
We have McKeever going for GB gold in the kayak final at 0937. Jess Walker and Heath & Schofield also hope to medal in their finals.
Tom Daley back on the 10m board at 1000 needing to improve on last night for a final place.
Annie Last in cross country mountain biking at 1230, a Brit each in the 50km walking race (King) and modern pentathlon (Woodbridge).
Obviously, Farah goes later in the 5k and we have an outside chance in the women's 4x400m relay.
Anglo-Irish boxing final around 2045 between Campbell and Nevin.

30 golds isn't looking that unrealistic now.

Re: Olympics Day 15 thread!
Before the games I read this report by Goldman Sachs:http://www.goldmansachs.com/our-thinking/topics/global-economic-outlook/olympics-and-economics-.pdf
They used various methods and the history of the games to predict 30 GB golds and 65 medals in total. I thought it was a bit optimistic but looks pretty bang on now.
Amazing what stats can do.

So diving....its the dismount section of a gymnasts routine done in your pants. Why do they have 3 different board heights for it?

Gold 26 already, well done Ed!
Respectable Bronze as well.
And Daley's looking like he'll make the final.

I was quite impressed with the speed of the kayake's.

The Ukrainian Kayake was pretty impressive:

The Bronze medallist in that race is called "Shtyl" - anyone want to have a go at pronouncing it?

Yeah the canoe sprints are quite exciting races, especially as you often see a lot of place changes through the race.
Walking, penthathlon and diving though...really long winded and dull, not to mention ridiculous.

Soccer really is crushingly slow and dull compared to the hockey. I know its a sport most of the world obsesses over but I will never understand why.

See I've found hockey surprisingly boring, I expected it to be really fast and exciting, but it always just looks like a lot of luck, the ball bounces around in the middle of all the sticks and then comes out in the goal. Very hard to follow.

Brazil look off, and Mexico are happy to sit back on their early goal.
Not a great advert for the sport, but hardly an indication of how exciting and interesting football can be.

The Arfrican Nations cup final was the last straw for me. I only follow it at all now because its rammed down my throat, but its not something i will watch out of choice.

While I won't argue that it is a bit odd, it is one of the toughest sports at the Olympics and getting rid of it would be a great shame, I enjoyed watching it, they nearly go as fast as marathon runners! It deserves to be there, and is a true test of fitness and endurance. Try run 5km in 21:10, then try walk it. Both are exceedingly difficult
Brazil grab one back, too late I'd say thought it was an enjoyable match personally, seen far worse.

Whilst noone would deny its tough that doesnt stop it being fundamentally stupid. They dont have a running through fire or playing polo on a horse with no legs event. Its one of those sports you really wonder how people ever got into in the first place. Id assume in most cases they couldnt get on the running team so the athletics coach jokingly suggested walking. That they have to employ a judge for every competitor to check they dont accidentally run sums it up really. faster person who refuses to do the sensible thing and run? Its just plain daft. It looks like a race to the toilets after a heavy night on the curry.

Re: Olympics Day 15 thread!
You're being a bit harsh PSW, there are far more idiotic sports at the games, as to how you get into it, some people are suited to it as they run marathons, you can adapt your style if you work hard enough.
Congrats to Robe a superb effort from him, 8 minutes off the national record if it was longer I think he could have taken a medal. Shame but he is still young and can come back from Rio. Can hold his head up high as one of the few Irish athletes (in the athletics side) to have performed superbly in his events
If GB had some decent competitors I doubt we would be having this conversation

Nothing more stupid than the modern pentathlon and it's an event that's been quite kind to us in the past.

Thats my point, why not run marathons?
Yes its not the only ridiculous port, its on my list along with dancing horses , pentathlon, falling into a swimming pool, synchronised swimming, rythmic gymnastics, steeplechase (its just another long distance track running event but limited to those with long legs), the Keiran, and soccer. Shooting is just incredibly dull, I feel the games could do without that too.
Not being the only stupid event doesnt make it worth a place.

Re: Olympics Day 15 thread!
It's meant to show off the skills of cavalry soldier, being able to ride a horse, fight with pistol and sword as well as run and swim, seems very outdated to me and it's inclusion is under serious threat, it isn't really a proper sport like the triathlon so get rid I say.

Re: Olympics Day 15 thread!
It is harder than running a marathon you watch it, 7km longer and the way you do it makes it a lot tougher on your legs. It is incredibly tough, deserves to be there.
There are only one or two things I don't want to see at the games or that I think shouldn't be there but it's not my place to judge really. Enjoy most stuff.

Running an ultra marathon is harder than running a marathon, they dont have the 100km in the olympics.
Would you have the three legged mountain climb in just because its tough or accept that its an ridiculous artificial race?
Theres a limit to how many sports they will include in the Olympics (rightly) having stupid (and boring) ones in doesnt do much to improve the image or quality of the games.
The process for the inclusion of some of these events is very political.
