2012/13 Premier League discussion thread
The big one is about to begin once again lads. Hopefully week 1 will bring a lot of goals, controversy and maybe even a shock!
God I've missed Jeff Stelling and the boys!
Game on.

Already a talking point in the west ham game with a goal from what could be an offside position
Rob green and Frederici both messing up in goal as well

Apparently Paul Lambert went absolutely ballistic over it.
I really fancied QPR to beat Swansea at home today. Only half way but not the greatest of starts for the Hoops.
Is this going to be another season of the same old for Liverpool?

Listening to the Liverpool the Gera goal was a great finish. Apparently the linesman out his flag up for the west ham goal but it wasn't given.
Listening to 5live Phil Dowd seems to be having a nightmare, unable to keep up with play and booking Liverpool players for very little but letting the WBA players off with clinical tackles, as I speak Phil Dowd has given a penalty from the half way line and sent Agger off, how the hell can he see from there?

Keown said there was contact but you can't give such a key decision from 50 yards away.

To you watching it from a good camera angle, from Dowds angle on the half way line? I don't see how you can give any decision from that distance.

So the referee shouldn't give a good decision just because he's so far away? The only issue should be is it a good decision or not, if so then no complaints, he should be congratulated....yeah yeah, I do realise I just defended a referee, I feel dirty

Liverpool transition will take time, for me they where unlucky last season, to hit the woodwork so often was unreal, the change could be a good thing but for me the problem was not finishing the bahful of chances they created, until that's rectified I can't see much changing

Re: 2012/13 Premier League discussion thread
The thing is gaf we've had 20 years of transitions and false dawns! I know it's only one game in but it's quite deflating getting spanked 3-0 by what is considered a mid table team at best.
That said all the best to West Brom and their fans. Great start for Steve Clarke.

I didn't say that but you can't bew 100% sure there was contact from 50 yards away and behind he incident, apparently it was a small tug on the shirt and he went down like he'd been shot. Phil Dowd must have bloody good eye sight to see minimal contact from there.

Totally agree with what you're saying and definitely understand your viewpoint, its easy for an outsider to give their 10p worth, Liverpool fans no doubt are sick of the same old deflating feeling, what's your thoughts on the managerial change though? For me I just couldn't see so many efforts hit the woodwork again

Re: 2012/13 Premier League discussion thread
well I'd say he would have been 100% to give a penalty from that distance and by all accounts he got it spot on, anyway, over the last couple of years we've seen refs make decisions after consoltation with the fourth official via their mics, wouldn't rule it out this time eitherhampo171 wrote:the-gaffer wrote:So the referee shouldn't give a good decision just because he's so far away? I'm not hung up on Rodgers gaf. One decent season under his belt and he manages to bag a top top job but saying that who was available and are we the proposition that we once were? Also his treatment of Carroll has been harsh in my opinion.
The next match should be a routine win at home.....to Man City! Joking aside we need to make Anfield a fortress again.

To be fair after the way he transformed Reading in the Championship you could say two good seasons but your point is still as valid, for me the player Liverpool are crying out for and I believe is gettable is Emmanual Adebayor, I think he'd transform Liverpool and give them a different dimension and he's probably a bigger goal threat than Carroll and Borini as well as possibly Suarez

Adebayor on his day can be totally unplayable but his attitude would worry me. I'd be a shame and perhaps rather sad he if just digs his heels in at City because of his wage demands scuppering a potential move. But that's the game today I suppose.

I kinda agree buddy. It doesn't numb the pain though! I think the fact that the majority of 'Pool fans would have been happy with a point today speaks volumes. I'd guess that Newcastle, Spurs and even Everton fans would fancy their team to get 3 points at the Hawthorns?

Well i for 1 wanted 3 points, but we couldnt have had a worse start if we tried! Duffed by an average team with agger banned for our next game which just happens to be man city...can honestly see us being in the bottom 3 after 5 games.

Brendan got sacked from Reading in 6 months after jumping ship at Watford. He was a good manager for the swans but the systems he inherited from Martinez and Sousa meant he had a ready made team. He made a couple of good buys in Sinclair and Borini but some other not so good ones.
Laudrup is already attracting a quality of player the swans havent had before, if they get Hernandez as well as Michu then we could better our 11th place last season.
I dont think LFC will give Brendan the time he needs and he will be gone by xmas. LFC have some big games coming up in the next month. could BR be the first manager to go?

Both penalties were soft, but both were penalties. Liverpool didn't seem very comfortable on the ball at the back, looked far better when you counter-attacked us. Suarez is always dangerous but he missed a couple of absolute sitters.
Gera's goal was out of this world, and Lukaku looks like a bit of a beast.

Now on the coach on the way back from Fulham. Just awful. I dont think I have seen a worse performamce from us for many years. But its only the first game of the season and we cannot play worse than that (I hope). Bring on QPR next week

Whilst it will be exciting does anyone think this season is shaping up to be a poor one?
Spurs, arsenal, Liverpool look to be facing a difficult season and well organised sides will get plenty of points from them IMO.
Any from 10 clubs could go down, think the winners will get into the 90s too.

Just watched the penalty decision and if thats how football is going it is very worrying. Had that been given for us I'd be laughing all the way to the bank as I'd feel like we'd got a freebie. No chance is there enough contact to warrant either a penalty or a red card for Agger.
Awful decision, Phil Dowd isn't fit enough to be a premier league referee, he was constantly off the pace today, looks like he's training for a sumo competition. I'm not saying that had the penalty not been given it would have changed the result but no way is that a penalty for me, such a shame it's accepted when players go down when breathed on these days and fans accept it.

I can see City, Utd and Chelsea pulling away from everybody else and there being a 15+ points difference between third and fourth.
But then every top league in Europe is like this now. Bar maybe France.

Indeed, same thing could be said of Luis Suarez though surely? Probably the worst culprit in the league for that sort of thing.
What goes around comes around. Suarez got a dodgy penalty against us last season, Long got one for us this.
Re: 2012/13 Premier League discussion thread
I said if it had happened for us I'd admit it was dodgy and I did last season. You said they where penalties before and now the Long one is dodgy?
The main issue I have mate is this penalty doesn't just effect today, it effects the City and Arsenal games as well.

We had chances but Suarez was very wasteful. I still feel we need a clinical 20 goal a season striker.

I agree. Be interesting to see how things pan out with Aston Villa because whilst he'll not add much from a footballing perspective Darren Bent could very well be that man.

Dodgy in the sense that some would give it, some wouldn't. For me, it was a penalty, a soft one but a penalty.
Ah those are your next two games! I wondered what you meant for a minute. If Rodgers truly believes it wasn't a penalty/worthy of a red card, you'll appeal and it may well get rescinded. We've had enough shockers go against us over the years as a "small club" so I'm not going to argue about us possibly getting the rub of the green.

Jamie Carragher will have a torrid time against City's front line. Very worrying.

Re: 2012/13 Premier League discussion thread
And before I go, Really not sure about Rodgers looking to freeze out Carroll. I'm not saying he's a twenty goal a season man, but he would have buried Suarez's two chances today.
Suarez is for me more of a creator who will grab around 10/12 goals and set up just as many.

Re: 2012/13 Premier League discussion thread
I can't see Chelsea pulling away, City and United yes but not Chelsea for me, they where a bot of the pace last year and the guys brought in don't have much if any experiance of English football, what they do have to do though is persist with it in my opinion, constant disruption won't do anyone any good
I'm thinking Chelsea will be a good team to watch this year, score a lot of goals but lose a few as well, can see that being their downfall for this season

I can see Chelsea embarrassing some of the lesser teams this year, especially at the Bridge, by 5 or 6 goals with the attacking riches they now have, but I think that we'll fall away after Christmas with Utd and Citeh having more depth and being better defensively/having the ability to grind out results.
