Your task is simple. FIFA are setting up their museum to celebrate the history of football. Your task is to select your greatest ever World XI, along with 5 subs and a manager. Pick the formation that best reflects football history and then fill it with the best players to make the team.

Manager
Rinus Michels

Michels was a footballing innovator, and a purist that started the notion of ‘total football’ where every player is capable of playing every position and the game is played on the ground with fluid movement all over the pitch. Incidentally, this style had Johan Cruyff as one of its disciples, and he took on the ideals to create Barcelona’s ‘dream team’ of the early 1990s. This then spawned the Barcelona we see today – with Pep Guardiola taking his former managers style further into the modern era.

In many ways, the birth of this style would be enough to insert Michels as manager, but he backed the style up with substance – and trophies.

He amassed 4 Dutch titles, 3 domestic cups, and Ajax’s first European Cup in his spell in charge. He had further success at Barcelona, winning the league title with them in his first season. He then took on the challenge of the Dutch national team, leading one of the finest national teams of all time to the 1974 World Cup final, only to be beaten by Germany. He returned to manage the Netherlands a second time however, delivering their only major tournament victory at the 1988 European Championships.

Formation - 4-4-2
The formation chosen was the classic 4-4-2. This formation has endured since its inception, and continues to be utilised today. It provides the classic balance between attack and defence that was sought by teams as the game evolved, and brought the notion of four men at the back to the fore.

It has been the staple formation for many successful teams in history, and while modern thinking has more players being utilised in midfield, most formations can be directly referenced back to 4-4-2 in terms of their basis.
