England v SA. 4th ODI, Lords
First topic message reminder :
Now that England have the number one position back, SA will be keen to beat them at Lords to regain the #1 spot and England will be desperate to consolidate the #1. This has the makings of a very good match.
I cant see any team making any changes from the third ODI.
England 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ravi Bopara, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 7 Samit Patel, 8 James Tredwell, 9 Jade Dernbach, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steve Finn.
South Africa 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Hashim Amla, 3 JP Duminy, 4 Dean Elgar, 5 AB de Villiers (capt, wk), 6 Faf du Plessis, 7 Wayne Parnell, 8 Robin Peterson, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Think these two matches have shown that a fit Tredwell is better than a Swann with a damaged wing.

I can see his point, but if you are going to allow switch hitting, I think that If a bowler is good enough he should be allowed to change which hand he bowls with without telling the umpire.
On a different subject, if McLaren is going to bat 9, I don't get why he was picked a head of Morkel.

I say let 'em try it ... as long as the umpiring is sensible , they can't have it both ways on wides and lbw...
Reckon once they switch there should be no leg side , as it were
Peterson has done really well here , and SA will have something to bowl at after all.

Finn gets Elgar who struggled out there. Much better display from Kieswetter.

Elgar gone ...looks like 220 or so ...
Bit in the wicket so England will want to get a better start than Friday , can't expect Morgan to do it all every time.
Nice throw from Dernbach ...

Great bit of fielding for a change. Dernbach direct hit to run McLaren out. SA 215/8

Good runs from SA to finish with, mainly thanks to Peterson. But England will be happy enough with SA 220/6
Once again good bowling from all

Difficult to say how much of this has been poor batting or how much is down to the pitch and conditions, it seems runscoring isn't very easy.

Reckon there is a game on here , Biltong...hasn't looked too easy to score by orthodox methods
Rather be in England's shoes but if SA get some early breaks again , who knows ?

Aye, most struggled but ABDV and Peterson both had good S/R's. Did look hard to score though which is not like Lords.

Yeah , SA will need a few quick wickets to put England under pressure, the score isn't high enough to worry England if they have wickets in hand

With Cook being gone it does thrw a spanner into the works but Bell and Trott are more than capable of surviving for 10-15 overs. I do wonder if Mogs will come in before Bopara though.

Same situation as last time really, the RRR isn't a problem and it's just a case of staying out there.

Right, this is where England got bogged down for 10 overs, then Cook being out soon followed by Bops, in the last odi, which caused concern.
So please lads keep the singles ticking.

Its ok to go steady but the scoreboard needs to keep ticking over or too much pressure will be built.

Handy fifty stand . No need to hurry unduly but you don't want to get behind the required rate too much as it seems like a slow scoring pitch , and we know Parnell isn't going to give much away.
Bell looks as though he wants to get on with it...

Bell is timing it, but straight to fielders. He is no Morgan with his placement on such wkts.

3 an over for the last 6 overs, just ok. Better than Cook and Trott from overs 10-16{last odi} at least.

Not too much oressure on Bops then. But really he should be able to handle it anyway.

These set batsman are making the pitch look easier to bat on than most of the SA batsman. But still not quick scoring. Conditions look the same so extra credit to the bowlers.

I do still get concerned about Trotts scoring rate though. In relatively small totals like this its ok but i dont feel that confident in him if its a run a ball chase.

Nice and steady from these two, absolutely no need to take risks. RRR is at 4 and a half an over.

I am not saying that they should take risks Duty, just that i am concerned about Trott's SR. He generally puts pressure on the other batsmen to take risks by batting slowly.

Its almost like he listens to you.
Trotts SR isnt that bad, and its his role in the team,...it works for england in most cases. They are well on the rate with wickets in hand...surely much better than having 10 keiswetters who get out for 10 off 6 balls when chasing jack all.
people said the same about Cook when he was made Captain. With these two in the side England have had their best run of results in ODIs in as long as I can remember ( even with the stinking by India)
Proper batsmen works for them, how often have they needed to score 300+?

Its just something that has never sat well with me. Great run scorer and an excellent anchor but he will never turn matches with blistering scoring.
If England were chasing 300+, would you be comfortable with Trott?

All they need to do is improve these areas, with a few more singles:
Cook and Trott{last odi} overs 10-19, 21 runs followed by 2 quick wkts.
Today; Trott and Bell, overs 10-20, 42 runs. Much better.

Maybe not, but they aren't generally chasing 300+. Are they?

Yeah but would you drop your best run scorer in ODIS by some distance for the cases that occur one in ten matches? Or do you stick by him for the other 9? You could equally ask "well do we really want Anderson in when we could have another batsman incase we end up 5 down in 10 overs"
Of course Id prefer Amla who scores as many runs faster, but Trott is hardly the weakest link in this England side. His record is brilliant, his average far better than KPs for one
