Read went a bit mad at the end but we have managed to scrape a 42 run lead thanks to another 5-fer for the Viscount. Need to keep wickets intact tonight.

Last year when Jimmy was playing for Leics, I saw Batty bowl him just before lunch for not very many - just saying ....
Well, that can mean only one thing; Gareth Batty is a Test standard spinner.
One of my favourite Taylor innings was against Surrey, where he dug in for a glorious 50 on an absolute minefield, I think at the Oval! Fond memories. I am sure he will make some more tomorrow!
Jimmy Taylor lbw to 'Viscount' Tim Linley for 12 in the over before lunch.
I'll leave JDizzle to adjudicate on whether that makes the Viscount a Test standard seamer.
JD - for such a little fellow, Taylor seems mighty keen to get to the lunch table!
Who should open the batting for England?
Tim Linley?

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire match thread
JD - I understand Tim Linley's been working hard on his batting but I don't think he's quite there yet. Best he stick with the day job - great to see this tireless and dedicated professional get a fivefer.
That said, also good to pick up a second batting point at the start of the day thanks to the Viscount and Meaker.
We've done really well to end the second day on top but it's still too close for comfort. Read once more proving to be our bogeyman!
I've got a couple of work meetings in London tomorrow. Hope to catch the last hour ....

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire match thread
by all accounts a great bowling performance by the Viscount! -
I'm out at the paralympics all day tomorrow so will miss out on all the 'fun'!
Lancs have done well... I guess it is still just possible that both Lancs and Surrey could win their matches... Based on today's close of play...I'm still thinking, along the lines of Guildfordbat, that the 'winner takes all' in the last match of the season... but a draw would mean we stay up!

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire match thread
Guildford's tireless advocacy of the selection of the Viscount has finally paid off today. (to both of them). Two matches in a row where we have taken a first innings lead.
Looks likely there will be a positive result in this match - one way or the other. Judging by Kartik's figures of 3 for 43 off 29 overs there could be good prospects for Kartik and Batty bowling together in the 4th innings...
Read (along with Roland-Jones) would definitely be in a county team of players who always seem to perform well against Surrey.

So you reckon his batting isn't up to opening in a Test Match yet Guildford? But we have to get him in somewhere as he deserves it for getting Jimmy out. Average batting, solid bowling... Ravi's ODI replacement?

Surrey 193 - 5 at tea. Very tense. Lead is starting to reach a level that may be defensible - at 235, but we could do with another 50+ before we are clear favourites.

The Brain and Wilson now put on 60, mostly grinding it out with singles, but a 6 just now from the Brain.
Wilson, formerly known as the Drinks Carrier, has "waited" his time to good effect, but a good call by Adams to pick him for this match as Davies had gone off the boil...

Jimbob - there would be a good case for that team selection. Meanwhile, with the sudden upsurge in scoring rate, I'm wondering whether Surrey thinking about declaring before the close to have a few overs at Notts. That would be a bold move as it would increase both the chances of us losing and winning.
The lead is currently 290 -I think they should press on for a fair bit yet....

Evening Corporal and all - yes, it did. Enormously. I cried out (Corporal and any other readers of the wallpaper site will follow this ): ''Give him his cap!'' which drew a chuckle from Ovalteeny no less.
Due to my second meeting overrunning, I only saw about the last 25 minutes of our innings and Kartik's over. I can't add much. Meaker was out the second ball I saw! Batty and Kartik swung effectively for a short while. We were clearly going for the runs by then and not too worried about getting out which we duly did. I'll add for JDizzle that Kartik was well caught by Jimmy Taylor to wrap up the innings.
Scaredy cat move - I thought - by Notts in sending Gurney out as nightwatchman for the one over. Gurney and Edwards twice declined easy singles so there was no way that Edwards was going to face anything tonight. Hopefully, it'll be Meaker time just after 10:30 tomorrow morning and Gurney can be sent immediately on his way. I appreciate Notts didn't want to lose a wicket tonight but they hardly showed any confidence with what they did. An early morning wicket - even of the nightwatchman - should give us an immediate boost.
I was told the wicket was certainly showing signs of turn today but didn't see enough myself to judge.
Looking good. I've always maintained it's very difficult to win by making the highest innings score in the fourth innings which Notts now have to do. Kartik should be a valuable part of our armoury tomorrow. However, the game is far from over and no one should underestimate Surrey's ability to muck things up ....
PS Corporal - PM sent to you.

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire match thread
Another big day for us tomorrow. Always a risk that Middlesex may give Lancs a sniff of victory, so we really need to exert relentless pressure. Maybe it will be Anasari's turn to take a few wickets when Notts think they have seen off Kartik and Nora! Both the Viscount and Meaker could take a few wickets too....
Devotion to duty for Guildford to turn up for half an hour's play today.

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire match thread
Hi chaps - managed to get along to the Oval today. Delighted I did. Excellent team performance.
First off - and this takes nothing away from us - I was disappointed with Notts. They never seemed interested -since sending out Gurney as nightwatchman last night for just one over- in trying to push for a win. As I thought likely, Gurney fell straightaway this morning and that put us in the ascendancy. It was hard graft for much of the morning but we kept plugging away and Notts never threatened. And then in the over before lunch .... ... the golden arm of Pietersen!
Pietersen actually bowled very well and seemed to get more turn than anyone. However, the help he indirectly received from Kartik and Batty shouldn't be overlooked. They had dried the runs up so much that by the time Pietersen came on there was hardly any way that we could lose. Kartik got a fair bit of bounce at times whilst the skipper's control and subtle variations were impressive.
Read tried to up the tempo when he came to the crease but the fight had largely gone fom Notts by then and wickets continued to fall regularly throughout the afternoon session. The bowlers were at all times backed up by energetic and committed fielding. A tremendous chase and pull back from the boundary rope by the Baron in the morning session. After lunch, bogeyman Read was caught by Ansari. Not that difficult a chance admittedly but it seemed certain that the ball would be safely pouched as soon as it went upwards in his direction.
All in all, a very good win against a team who let's not forget who were until recently contenders for the Championship. Well done all and, in particular, Gareth Batty. He certainly earned his four wickets but also deserves praise for his captaincy and teamwork. Rather than lead his side off at the end, he pushed Gary Wilson forward (this was Wilson's last Surrey match of the season as he now once more joins up with Ireland) to take that honour and then left the pitch last of all behind the rest of the team.
PS If shown at all on Surrey tv, look out for Mullaney's reaction to being adjudged lbw to Meaker. Not happy to say the least.
PPS JDizzle - Batty at least waited until just after lunch this time to get Little Jimmy!

It's not shame to have a bogey bowler of the quality of Gareth Batty! If Jimmy had tamed Gareth then I would have expected hundreds every innings against the innocuous spin of Ashwin and Ojha on Indian pitches. He's just cooling expectation on himself. Very wise.

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire match thread
great report, Guildford Bat! - stunning result for Surrey.. so pleased after such a difficult season...
Cricket's a funny old game... I was just reflecting that the only county championship cricket I saw was at guildford..when Surrey played Lancs... the 1/2 day we saw before the rain came.. Lancs were in complete control...they've now ended up being relegated...
Batty's leadership in such difficult circumstances, can't be under estimated....
Definetely going to crack open a to celebrate... Well done the lads!
