Good over from Swann. 6 of it, and Charles looking increasingly streaky. Big turn on a few though, which is worrying.

Mike - yes, I agree with that although - being of a similar vintage to Holding - probably am more comortable with it than you. I do find it slightly odd though. As a young man (and I don't just mean as a bowler), Holding was very headstrong and opinionated which brought him into conflict with some accepted norms of the time.
Maybe, all rebels get smoothed out - a warning to you, perhaps?

So average spin not that useful then?
Fantastic ball striking, this man is a treat to watch.

Is Swann useless because he is getting dispatched by Charles then? And I think Gayle would do exactly the same thing to Briggs to be honest...

Swann at least gives it a rip and attacks...Patel tosses up total pies to be dispatched. He's a waste of time.

Jonny Bairstow into the attack!!.

Doesn't matter how they get it down there if it is disappearing for six. And Briggs is hardly an attacking bowling, he fizzes it in at near 60mph most of the time!

Swann's pushing it through a bit too much for me. Needs to toss some up. Like that. Dropped! Oh dear...

And at least Finny caught the important one! He must have been shaking under that one! Bowled Swanny, got him eventually.

Dernbach and not JB with the last over, Finn puts one down. And Gayle's gone next ball.

But he makes amends and takes the next one. Well bowled Swann, good man Finn! Gayle gone. Has the damage been done?

Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
Patel fires it in, he doesn't lob it up? The issue is he's too predictable really.
Same with Swann, when Charles got after him he was just firing it in. He's a much better bowler when he varies his pace. As per the drop.

His fired in deliveries ARE lobbed up though. That is how rubbish they are. Firing the ball in is meant to make it difficult to get under...nobody has trouble dispatching his dross in to the stands.
Pressure on Finny there, well done, took the important one. Damage done though, only one winner here.

Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
I expect England to find some control now. There is lot power in that lineup. But Gayle is Gayle. Marlon Samuels loves this England bowling though, and if he gets set, he can really bring about some serious damage.

What did I say about J Charles getting a quickfire 50? Hang your head in shame Shelsey lad!
Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
To be fair nothing I've seen from Charles today suggests he's a good player. He's a bit like that guy Fletcher was it? Slogs at virtually everything, and occasionally connects. On a good day and with a bit of luck he'll score the odd 50, but...

I too feel the same about charles, slog or nothing. But he's having a good day against England today.Mike Selig wrote:To be fair nothing I've seen from Charles today suggests he's a good player. Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
England should have opened up with Swann and Finn. Put your two best bowlers on at the start against who is (by quite some way) your opposition's best player (in this format).
West Indies should get 190 at least and that's a tough chase in anybody's books. Let along for an England side struggling with spin on a pitch offering something and narine in the opposition ranks.
england's bowlers have to come good here, give the batsman a chance (not often we say things this way round?).

And that's a good start from Broad, 3 dot balls then a good slower ball hit straight to Morgan at backward point.

To be fair, the list of bowlers that Chris Gayle hasn't destroyed at one point is shorter than the list of ones he has.
Samuels out, and he could have been dangerous. Just pulling it back here.

Or those Hales/Wright/Buttler guys.
Does anyone think it's fair to say England's batting looks better when they go first rather than have to chase down a 160+ score?

Pollard in at 4. He can hit them big, but quality bowling undo him, particularly early on in his innings.

Just my opinion but I think Buttler and Hales are certainly more cultured players. Doesn't mean they'll get more runs today, but over the course of their careers I think they'll do better. Wright? you may have a bit of a point.
I fancy England batting first in these games more as well. They can dictate the pace of the game better, and won't panic so much if they fall behind the run-rate (because there isn't one to fall behind).
Wicket maiden for Broad, he's bowled well today.
Ball following Finn around...

Buttler is a quality player. His List A record is tremendous, he can build an innings.
And it is odd, England build there WC win on restricting teams and chasing down a sub par total but on spinning pitches it could be different.

England are resting a lot of control. That runrate has dropped big since Gayle went.

Arrggh Samit. Need to take him off now, he is our weak link and Charles has just realised that before exploiting it brutally.

Pollard got lucky against Patel with the ball dropping safe, but he is gone now. They have to be careful they don't fall away here, they need at least 170 on a pitch this good you would think.

West Indies should get at least 180, probably closer to 190, but they've stalled a bit.
Better over that though, Charles playing some nice shots there.

Swann, who is England's best bowler, won't bowl out. Patel will.
Thoughts? the reasoning will be 2 right handers in and ball spinning in/away, but come on.

Bravo in, and they have more power in Sammy and Russell. But England resting some control. If they can restrict WI below 180, they would feel they have pulled things back well.
