There's always the first Castillo fight which he clearly lost.

Or perhaps better defence so he didn't get hit on it so often, and the ability to stick to game plans, not get drawn into fighting when he should have been boxing. He was fantastic, but it wasn't only his chin that let him down Truss, and for the record, Leonard did get past that jab eventually, and ko'd him.

His defence was his offence generally...
Hard to assault someone sticking a tough, crisp, lightning fast jab in your face!!
Hearns may have lost during his career....but he was never outboxed...
Outboxed Leonard twice...

But he was guilty of poor decision making then-if he was never out boxed , he must have been outfought in the rematch with Barkley ( a fight which I haven't seen) which supports my argument that he made poor tactical decisions. And for all his outboxing of Leonard, he still didn't beat him ( poor decision in the second fight not withstanding).

He lost to Barkley ten years after Cuevas.....
Robinson lost to Lamotta and Leonard lost to Duran..probably to poor decision making..Hagler-Vito!!!
Hate to tell you Mate...but no one in the Boxing world is perfect...
My point is valid.....Never outboxed..

I always wonder if people have actually seen the Barkley fight when they reference it to degrade Hearns. It defined the 1/100 puncher's chance. One of Hearns' best fights to showcase his left to the body along with the Shuler icing.
More important than the name of the fighters who beat him/troubled him is the style.
Hagler, Kitchner, Brakley: All tough guys who'd come forwards and brave his power. To beat Hearns, you must risk getting knocked out by Hearns. Ask Leonard, you've got to take the front foot. Ask Benitez, you can't beat him on the front foot. McClellan generally preferred long range did he not? Does anyone beat Hearns from long range?

Agree that Barkley was the punchers chance- but if a blind punch from Barkley can KO hearns a targetted shot from Gerald does the same, and yes he did like to keep his opponent at the end of his arms, throwing long straight shots, but he did so whilst backing his man up- look at the first round of the Benn fiht as a prime example, and he was one tough SOB. I think that I anyone can absorb Tommy's shot at 160lb, it's him

Aye, but most of the time even targetted shots didn't get to Hearns very often. Very few fighters in history used their reach as well as Tommy and I don't think G Man was one of them.
Benn was a tough nut to crack in terms of making him give up, but ability to take a punch was never his strong point. You make as good an argument as there is for McClellan over Hearns, I just don't agree. The only thing that's certain is that it would be exciting

McClellan for me without too much pause for thought. Extremely uderrated fighter because of what happened to him. Benn's display was still one of the great post war performances by a British fighter.
Tommy never stopped a top class SM, correct me if I'm wrong, so could see McClellan stopping him. Be much more even if McClellan was forced to boil down to middleweight. Awesome fighter McClellan but not many overseas fighters would have beaten Benn that night.
