He's a real legend of the game for me.
Walsh is a legend. But Hadlee was more effective (albeit at 125kph) over the age of 35.
I second that...Hadlee was the most potent...and even deadly bowler at that age even until the day of his retirement.
and we don't know if he was only 125kph...because there were no speed guns.....I suspect he was more in the 125-135kph.
The only other bowler as potent and deadly I have viewed is Akram.
Hadlee was truly the Sultan of Swing
In his early days Hadlee was a tearaway, and probably came in at around 140. Post 1980 or so when he deliberately cut down his run up in search of accuracy and longevity I saw him clocked a couple of times in the high 120s (speed guns happened occasionally).
I played against Hadlee in a club match when he was 45 or so (apologies to everyone for re-telling this one ). He hit a ton in 15 overs for HSOB batting first - granted it was a small field, but the 6s were hitting the top of the pine trees on the boundary. Bowling, he ambled in off a few paces, and our opener cover-drove a 4. The next ball he ambled in, and the ball whistled past the nose.
I batted #8, and came in when Hadlee was bowling his 2nd spell (at that point the run rate required was phenomenal). The best I could manage was 2 play-and-misses outside off stump before the over finished. The next over I wound up at the other end, and Hadlee finished us off the over following.
good to know someone who played with Hadlee.
i remember in early 1980s there was a bowling speed tournament in england.......where the considered fastest bowlers participated.....Marshal won...Hadlee clocked around 90mph.
you are right he may have been in high 120s by late 80s.
That sounds about right, Hadlee was regarded as pretty quick before he deliberately throttled back in the early 80s. The change was quite controversial in NZ at the time, but Hadlee (who was big on his stats) had the last laugh as his career strike rate and average were significantly better post the change than before it.

Tauffel will indeed umpire the final alongside Aleem Dar. The two best umpires around still (despite what the ICC awards may think) and certainly the two who have driven standards upwards these last 5-8 years. Dar was one of the first to regularly give out batsmen playing forward to spinners, a long time before DRS came in; Taufel will be remembered for never being short of a smile, always staying calm and importantly getting so many difficult decisions right - I don't think I've ever seen an umpire get LBWs more consistently right, in particular with regards to what he gives out which you would originally think wasn't. Fitting that his last game will be a world final.

It riles me somewhat when commentators repeatedly say that you can't play spinners with your pads off the front foot any more "because of DRS".
In my view it is more because umpires have learnt to trust their judgement (admittedly with the aid of Hawk-Eye), and much more often than not they get it right. There was never a rule which said you shouldn't be given out on the front foot when playing a shot even if its going to hit the stumps - it was a convention which would have grown out of a/ doubt and b/ lazy umpiring. Of course, its also common sense that at grass roots levels where umpires are untrained and usually members of the participating teams, benefit of the doubt to the batsman should consistently be applied. As umpiring gets better at international level, they should be in doubt less, leading to more decisions that were previously given not out because of doubt becoming, rightly, out.
Very few decisions are overturned on DRS. In fact, the system usually backs up the umpires.

Re: T20 World Cup: Live Matches Discussion
I agree. The two best examples of "less doubt" for me are the LBWs to spinners on the front foot (in years gone by people used to say "there's no way you can tell") and giving a left-handed batsman out to a right arm over bowler even if it doesn't swing back in, particularly if the ball is full enough (Taufel deserves much credit for that one).
I remember Dar giving Gibbs out LBW on the front foot to Giles in I think 2003/04. Darell Hair also, for all his faults (which were mainly with his personality rather than his decision making), was one who gave spinners more LBWs than most.

Nice work Leff.
I had them as my 'dark horse' of course. Tipped them in superbru by 23 runs.
That was a stunning come back after what seemed a disastrous start.
It's great that the West Indies have won this title - hopefully it's the start of a new successful era for them and their fans.
