Celtic News - Season 2012/13
First topic message reminder :
Just thought I'd start a wee thread on here for Celtic, probably end up just like a wee diary for me to post to myself but c'est la vie
It's been a good start to the season, the league has been a bit slow, particularly at home but the European adventure has been a breath of fresh air, winning 5 and drawing 1 of our 6 games so far, including winning 3/3 away from home
Gary Hooper's performance in Moscow against Spartak was enough to have Gary Lineker drooling over him claiming it was the best CL performance from an English striker in years and claiming he should be called up for England, Fraser Forster got the call up too

Re: Celtic News - Season 2012/13
Can't see it happening this window, could be a possibility in the summer I reckon depending on if we stay up of course.
But other clubs are sniffing (Spurs, Saints apparantly) and they have more financial power and upside than us tbh

Re: Celtic News - Season 2012/13
I think hed be very stupid to leave in this window but stranger things have happened. Hooper is a natural goalscorer but at times his 1st touch and work rate aren't the best. He has done very well in the CL so I think he should be a good 10 plus goals a year in the Premier League!

Re: Celtic News - Season 2012/13
I would agree Niner, I think he would use us purely as a stepping stone to another club, but so long as he contributes 10-15 goals in a season and gains us a tidy little profit alls good

Re: Celtic News - Season 2012/13
Very true. I wouldn't want to see him leave but at the end of the day its his choice. If he wants to go then let him go at the end of the year but he shouldn't be let go cheap. He wants to go as afr as he can in his caeer and fair play to him. Celtic took him off Scunthorpe and will be making a big profit if he does leave.

Re: Celtic News - Season 2012/13
Wants to play for England and no disrespect to the SPL he isn't really getting noticed for his goals up there, so probably feels moving to the EPL is how he will get noticed.
Like you say you will make more than a tidy profit!

Re: Celtic News - Season 2012/13
I agree. The only thing he'll be giving up is European football but Celtic aren't guaranteed it every year. I don't know, personally if he has a good enough all round game to play for England but, to be honest and that might be slightly controversial.

Nah, just that the first post has not been updated. Strange. Is there a point to you mentioning Liverpool and Spurs?

It hadn't been updated for a few weeks before so why not mention any other results. Just another few cup upsets that happened on Sunday

A few weeks? The only result that is missing is that result. Try to keep this on topic. It's about "Celtic News" not about Liverpool and Spurs.

Would have taken Doyle 3/4 years ago but his stock has fallen a lot. He works exceptionally hard but just doesn't score goals.

Re: Celtic News - Season 2012/13
Ive never liked him, a white Fortune or Heskey in my opinion, strikers playing for Celtic should be scoring 20+ goals a season, particularly those coming in on £1m a year basic like Doyle would have
Doubt Hooper would go near Norwich in the Summer either to be honest, if he had any intention of joining them then he'd have forced the issue this window, it was obvious he didnt want to leave, I expect him to go but without being disrespectful to other clubs I think Hooper feels he could get a move to a club who have more ambition of challenging higher up the table

Re: Celtic News - Season 2012/13
Not long back from the game, got the night off from her in doors dso can post my thoughts on the game.
Glad we sent out a team we did, with having Juventus on Tuesday it would have been stupid to risk any first teamers unless we really needed to today, it also gave us.a chance to blood Rogic who looks like he's going to be a star, love the way he carries himself on the pitch, always had his head up and his touch was excellent, not easy on that pitch, not Kayal's biggest fan but felt he was a real pro today, he had a lot of responsibility and I felt he did all our younger players proud today, one of his better performances.
Gershon won everything in the air as did Rogne who is another who took responsibility well, really glad young Fraser got a game, he was excellent when he got a chance against Rennes last season and felt if he could fill out a bit he'd have a chance, not the biggest but he's very astute with his positional sense
Stokes and Miku did well today, Miku did a lot of good work to far away from the goal but when Watt came on 2nd half and Miku got moved right through as the central striker he could have got 3, that being said, if he was played through more in the first half there was another 2 or 3 1 on 1s he could have had
I don't generally like going up to Inverness, the games are usually dull and just an ugly battle, the players seemed to play with a freedom today though, really happy with the performance...now for the small matter of doing Juventus

Yeah, was slightly apprehensive about the line up, but they were excellent. Shows we have great squad depth.
Rogic looked decent, two footed which I always like in an attacking player. Gershon was steady and took his goal well. McGeough was lively and Fraser did well.
Kayal as MOTM for me. I rate him a lot higher than most. When he's on top form he is really dynamic and can really stop a pass, which is what we are missing since Ki left. Remember him in the first Utrecht game and he was immense. He likes to put his foot in, but he can play as well, something Brown can't do.
Can't wait for the game tomorrow, my first in the CL this season. Sammy trained today which is a big plus.

Gutted. Proud of the effort put in by the lads but have to be more clinicalin big matches and take your chances when they come along.
The team played well but too many defensive mistakes. Lenny should not have played Ambrose. There is no way he could have been fully prepared mentally or physically. Forster should have done better for the 1st goal I thought but he has kept us in so many Euro games so I'm not complaining about him having an off night.
Izzy looked back near what he is capable of and was impressed with Forrest and Commons especially in the 1st half. Wanyama looked brilliant in parts and then gave some poor passes away too. Brown frustarates me like no other player! Sammy was a big miss!
Italy in a few weeks. I'd say its over but don't know what sort of approach should be take over there.

Just have a go under completely no pressure. If Juventus score first, it's game over. If Celtic score first and early on (first 20 minutes), then Juventus may be put on the back foot. It ain't over till it's over!

True Duty. Just a bit gutted here. 1st goal over there would change everything and no point just giving up!

I must say I thought Forster should have done better with the 3rd goal as well, the 2nd one maybe.

Oh yeah! I love him, he was brilliant for us at Norwich in League 1!
Just by his high standards he will be bitterly disappointed by the goals I expect.

Re: Celtic News - Season 2012/13
What a pumping, weirdly enough, I actually think for about 75 minutes that was actually our best home performance of the season, especially the first half, what the ref let their defenders off with though was a scandel, not using it as an excuse but he had no backbone at all when it came to making a decision and sticking to it, other than that though I felt he had a good gmae and tried to let the game flow.
They're a top top side and so clinical, even though we played well we couldn't get through their defence.
I thought Forster should have done better for the second goal, it was right at him and his hands just weren't strong enough, the through ball though was sensational and Marchisio took it really well.
Playing Ambrose was a major mistake, I've got no idea of the logic in it either to be honest, surely we've been working on Juventus for weeks now and surely we'd be learning all about them and how to cope with their forwards and runners, so why we decided to throw a guy into the mix who has not been involved for Celtic for 5 weeks now was not only a surprise but just a basic lack of tactical nouse from Lennon IMO, he was extremely niave with that selection.
The thing is, Ambrose was either going to be a hero or a villian last night, with that in mind I felt it was a gamble that we didn't need to take in the first leg.
Celtic exceeded all expectations and had some pretty epic European results, infact, if they won one more game in Europe it would be the most wins the clubs ever had in a single season from Europe, considering we've contested 3 European Finals that in itself was some going...Juventus were just a step to far, a top top side who don't take prisoners, potential winners for me

Few disappointing results over the last week but let's hope for a win and good performance today.
Joe ledley has been in great form, however, and as I type this he heads in the opener.

Shocking from Izzy. Really poor goal to give away.
Well worked goal from the corner for Celtic and good to see Stokesy getting back to form. Great start from Forrest and this is shaping up to be a tidy match!

Re: Celtic News - Season 2012/13
What a game at Celtic Park yesterday, very strange game I must admit, first 35 minutes Celtic were good, should have been 3 up but slack. Play allowed the Dons back into it and they came out in the 2nd half and played with some freedom, it showed too, Magennis was causing our two central defenders all sorts of problems, I'm not a huge fan of Wilson & Ambrose as a pairing, both are strange, they're more comfortable against smaller tricky players, against big target men though and they often get bullied.
At 3-1 down I said to my mate there's plenty of time left although I couldn't see where a goal was coming from, it was all a bit scrappy, the goal ended up being scrappy to be fair, it took a major deflection and then it was game on, Aberdeen who I think could have scored more just went into their shell, the ending of the game was brilliant, well if you are a Celtic fan...Hooper who was hopeless all day with the simple nod in and Sammy with a sublime overhead kick, a goal fitting to win a game of this nature...
I left the ground happy with the excitement of the game but its as poor a Celtic defence as I've seen from a Neil Lennon team

Also, I think its worthy to point out that since the inception of the 38 game SPL this is the second lowest tally of points accumulated after 31 games, the lowest being Tony Mowbray's team who managed only 4 points less

Its been reported today that Stokes will be staying at Celtic, that's a good move, I know some aren't a fan of his but its unlikely Hooper will be here come the start of next season, a fit Anthony Stokes is worth 25 goals a season no problem so I think it'd be foolish to let someone like that go, particularly for nothing

I agree Kay Fabe! I like Stokesy. He's not the best footballer in the world but he'll get ya goals and give ya effort that is needed. I still think Hooper's going to be in for a big shock if he goes to the Premiership.

I've been really impressed with Beram Kayal in the last month, I'm not his biggest fan but credit when its due
This has been a thing I've felt for a while now, not got a clue if its just due to me getting older but I don't really like any of the players these days, some are good players, some have potential to be great players but I just don't get that feeling of utter dread at the thought of any of them leaving...I remember standing at Hampden after Larsson's last match after he scored a double to win the Scottish Cup, musta just stood there for about 40 minutes after the game with my head in my hands knowing I'd never see him play for us again, I was making deals with God that I'd finish with the mrs if he's sign a new contract
I also remember being heartbroken when Pierre Van Hooijdonk left, I loved that big guy, this current lot though, I just don't get that feeling, it doesn't help that I find it near on impossible to like the manager, again credit when its due and he's done well in Europe but I just find him unlikeable although I'm probably in a minority, his whole demeanour let's the club down IMO

Re: Celtic News - Season 2012/13
I'd agree with most of that, mate. The players we have now are good players but I can't see very many of them going down in Celtic folklore. They don't compare to Henrik, Sutton, BBJ and Stan and Lubo as my top 5 players of the time. They will not even be remembered in the same vein as Bobo, Joos, Mjallby, Petta and Agathe for me. This may be because these are the players I grew up idolising and bought into their myths and legends but I wouldn't have any current player in a starting team from 2003 except for Forster over Rab Douglas. And maybe Victor if he carries on the way he was in Europe.
It could be because I'm a bit older and less prone to hero-worship but they don't come close to these players for me. I'd be hard pushed to name my favourite player at the minute. Probably pick a young or Irish player. Or Joe Ledley.
I've always liked Kayal from he 1st came but he was poor after the injury and its good to see him back in a bit of form.
On Lennon, I can see where you're coming from. He's a bit dour but is seen as a true Celtic man and that's because he is in my eyes. He's had to put up with a lot of s*** in his career and I think its had an impact on how he interacts with the press. MON has obviously had a big influence on his career and I think he comes across sometimes as if he's trying to copy O'Neill.

I find it hard to publicly criticise Lennon mainly down to what he's had to deal with, I do think he's a hatd man to like but can totally understand why due to what he's had to put up with, I also don't think its fair if his own fans started having a go at him either after what he has to deal with from opposition, I just think feel that he plays on the fact Celtic fans won't turn on him...hmmm its a toughie, I can't stand The Green Brigade either, I think when they focus on football themed banter then no clubs fans can touch them but all their look at us look at us persecution complex has annoyed me big time, they come across as GB members first, Celtic fansd second

I agree about the GB. A lot of my mates think they're great but I just don't see it myself. Great for starting an atmosphere and stick to being fans of Celric 1st and foremost but all too often play the persecuted. They may be treated harshly at times but if they go and sing Celtic songs then they have nothing to be persecuted for.
Cherriesfna, I'd prefer not to think of the horrible chain of events that could set the move in action! In all seriousness, I'm a McCourt fan but he hasn't been doing it. Whether its by not getting enough chances or not being fit and having a poor attitude. I think he's 1 of the most naturally gifted footballers at Celtic but he's living off a couple of wondergoals. Maybe there's pressure on him to replicate this everytime he's brought off the bench to change a agme but he's showing the square root of fook all.

Re: Celtic News - Season 2012/13
Well that's another League Title in the bag Bhoys, hope you enjoyed the day on Sunday, lots has been said about the title being devalued, I personally don't buy into it, I think it was one of the most underwhelming titles we've ever won but that's through no fault of any Player, Manager, Coach, Director, CEO, Chairman or fan of Celtic Football Club, that isn't a dig either, its a fact, its not our fault our biggest rivals aren't challenging us anymore, we simply have to do what we have to do and that's go out and remain successful.
Its not been a vintage season in terms of league form but in a way its helped keep interest in the league, I'm not fussed, I want us to play better at times but in the end we're buying young men and trying to develop them and sell them at profit, consistancy is never going to be assiciated with young players so that's the price we need to pay for this stratagy, hopefully we can win the Scottish Cup, a League and Cup Double and qualifying for the last 16 while hopefully having a 30 goal a season striker and a 20 goal a season midfielder has to go down as a succeddful season, I do concede though that it could fall flat if we don't win the Cup
5 games that won us the Title?
Motherwell 0-2 Celtic
Motherwell were top of the League, Celtic had stuttered after Europe, this was old fashioned, 3pm kick off on a Saturday away game, Fir Park was packed, great display, great pass from Commons and sublime touch from Hooper for his goal
Aberdeen 0-2 Celtic
Again, Aberdeen could have went top if they beat Celtic, a draw could also have seen Hibs go top too, anyway, pittodrie was packed, first time in years it was packed, great atmosphere and Celtic got a good result with goals from Mulgrew and Lassad, two well taken goals
Hearts 0-4 Celtic
Celtic had taken a lot of criticism for their league form but went to Tyncastle and for the second year in a row won 4-0...they were 3-0 up after 28 minutes and completely blew Hearts out the water, again it was a full house as Hearts fans packed the stadium to help the club out of their financial crisis, histile Atmsophere added to the occassion.
Celtic. 6-2 Dundee Utd
Celtic were well on course now but instead of taking their foot off the pedal they destroyed a very talented Dundee Utd side
Celtic 4-3 Aberdeen
Possibly the League game of the season, Kris Commons scored the fastest goal of the Season in 12 seconds before Aberdeen stormed into a 3-1 lead, Celtic got back into the game with 20 minutes to go and the game looked like it was running away from the Champions until Hooper nodded a very late equaliser before a sublime injury time overhead kick from Georgios Samaras snatched the points in a game that'll go down as a classic
