Celtic News - Season 2012/13 - Page 2 Empty Celtic News - Season 2012/13

Post by Kay Fabe Mon 08 Oct 2012, 8:29 pm

First topic message reminder :

Just thought I'd start a wee thread on here for Celtic, probably end up just like a wee diary for me to post to myself but c'est la vie

It's been a good start to the season, the league has been a bit slow, particularly at home but the European adventure has been a breath of fresh air, winning 5 and drawing 1 of our 6 games so far, including winning 3/3 away from home

Gary Hooper's performance in Moscow against Spartak was enough to have Gary Lineker drooling over him claiming it was the best CL performance from an English striker in years and claiming he should be called up for England, Fraser Forster got the call up too

Just seen that myself too. Great news to see he's going to be at Celtic for another 4 years at least. Important for his development and the team's development.

Not a guarantee by any stretch of the imagination. It's still good news for Celtic, he's either going to be around for a good few years or you'll be able to get a bigger transfer fee for him.

He'll be around for a good few years, unless we get a ridiculous offer which hopefully won't happen, we've got a good business model now of buy young, develop and sell on at a big profit, Tony has a long way to go and his development would be best suited to staying at Celtic and playing more games and European football

Enjoyed the game yesterday even though it wasn't anywhere near as entertaining as I'd hoped it would be.

It felt like the 90s again heading up to Pittodrie for a capacity crowd, the place was buzzing

Strange day, its normally quite an open game up there but due to Aberdeen in my opinion being Celtic's biggest challengers it was more of a scrappy game, when Celtic won the midfield battle they won the match.

No-one really stood out in a Celtic shirt although Kelvin Wilson did well, I thought Wanyama did ok, his shot alone was immense though that cannoned off the post, great one touch finish from Lassad, made it look so easy

Off to Lisbon now for Tuesday's game, a score draw will see us through, to be fair though I do think we'll get beat but I still think we've got a great chance of qualifying for the last 16

Was working on Saturday so never got seeing the match at all. Nice to get a win in the league before Benfica. Would be delighted with a draw tomorrow night. Any new injuries ahead of it? Seen on twitter Lennie saying Commons and Sammy should be grand after picking up slight knocks on Saturday.

Crimey, yeah you're right but I'd like to think he will stay for a few more years at least. He's a young lad and has hopefully learnt the lessons from others before him who have left Celtic after a good year or 2 and seen their careers fall to pieces. That might sound like a dig at liam Miller but its more a regret for the career he looked like he could have had.

I was disappointed in Celtic last night, for me this game was a 'freebie' we all knew that Celtic could have lost 10-0 last night and still been favourites to qualify going into week 6, so I felt we where far to cautious last night, its the first away game this season in Europe that we didn't play Commons/Samaras/Hooper up front for a 4-3-3/4-5-1 and I felt we where far to narrow and rigid, Benfica are a good side at home but they new one slip and they where dead so they where always going to be nervy, I felt we offered very little resistance.

Probably slighlty harsh, every single Celtic fan at the start of the group would have taken going into the last game at home knowing a win should see us through

I'd have taken it myself Kay Fabe but once we had a taste of qualifying with a game in hand we started to get greedy. I was disappointed in the performance, especially to start with as the 1st 30 minutes the team looked very sloppy and complacent. Don't think Hooper was ready to start and his workrate wasn't what it should have been although the same could be said for a lot of players.

Is it just me or is Scott Brown not good enough to start? I think he's a very average footballer and there's only so much I can take of him trying to start a fight to look committed.

I was never a fan of Scott Brown but something seemed to click in him about 18 months ago and for me he has been vastly improved, that being said, I felt it was a mistake to play him last night, regardless of how important Lennon feels Brown or even Hooper are to the team, if they're not fit they're not fit, Brown needs a hip opperation, the sooner he can get it the better, its not fair on him or the team

You've got to hope Barca will beat Benfica at the Camp Nou, so maybe a draw against Moscow could be enough, it'll be a big ask without Wanyama though, he's been immense

I think he can do a job at times but I don't see him as integral to the team. He is committed but I just don't think that's enough at this level. His limitations are badly exposed at this level and I would much rather see Kayal, who has regressed since his injury in my eyes, get a start.

Big Victor will be a massive loss but I'm hoping someone can step up to the plate. Would like to see a Ledley-Kayal combo with Commons and Forrest on the wings. I really do think Ledley's a very good player.

It looks like we'll be relying heavily on Kayal for a wee while now, I'm noy his biggest fan, he came onto a game in the second half of the season iin his first season but after we gave him his contract he hardly kicked a ball for us, there's a player in there somewhere tho so I'd not be adverse to seeing him get a chance.

I really like Ledley, he's the quiet man of the team, just goes about his business without any fuss

He sure was quiet yesterday, he was Celtic's worst player, utterly awful in ball retention (to be fair most of the side were) but especially in that he kept getting skinned by the Benfica attackers.

Who's this you mean monty?

Ledley is the most under-rated player in the team. Tidy on the ball, does any job asked of him and puts in a shift.

Ledley, just don't rate him at all. Thought he had a bad game though collectively it was Celtic worst performance in Europe this season.

Will Forrest be back for Spartak?

I love Joe Ledley, have done since the day he signed but I must admit that I've found him to be a wee bit iof a passenger in our CL campaign so far, whether he wasn't 100% fit or overawed I don't know but he wasn't the same player he has been for us domestically or even in the Europa last season, I trust him though, if he's having a stinker he'll still stand in front of a bullet

I've got a love/hate thing going on with Forrest, he frustrates the hell out of me sometimes, I hate when he stops and throws his arms about when he thinks he's been fouled, I also think he hides quite a lot, he tends to drift infield and doesn't leave either Matthews or Lustig much of an a ngle to pass the ball to him and takes himself right out the game, on the otherhand, when he is on song and gets a bit of space he can do a lot of damage.

I rate him highly I just feel he has an awful lot of learning to do first, I do prefer him away from home though, I think when teams push up against us we get the best out of him

Another absolutely horrific performance from Celtic at home in the League, fair play to Inverness, they're a very decent side but the constant dross at home in the league is becoming tiresome and turning into a major problem

7 goals at home in 7 games is attrocious, we won't entice fans to games with performances like what we've been getting, our cracking European form has masked over the obvious cracks that are sticking out like a sore thumb

Lennon for some reason decided to play the martre yesterday and said he's walk if fans aren't happy with him, can he not just accept the criticism that the home form has been diaboilical?

That being said, looking forward to Wednesday night for the Hearts game, should be a cracker and I expect Tyncastle to be sold out

What is going on? Obviously the players are going to be tired after CL games but if that's the case there needs to be a slightly more rotation of the squad being done. We have a steong enough squad to beat most teams while not at full strength without being arrogant about it.

I was actually happy with ledley the other night Kay Fabe. Although I think he might have stood out more due to his work rate in comparison as I thought it was a lazy performance.

Hooper is starting to annoy me a bit. I love the guy but he's seeming very lazy the last month or so and I'm starting to wonder if the hype is going to his head.

Forrest has a lot to learn but he has the potential and I think he's going to be very good as long as he sticks around to learn his trade. Same with Watt and Mc Geouch.

I think we should be giving McGeouch more game time, the lad has bundles of potential and if we can't give him games now with no Rangers in the League we'll never give him games, I also feel Lassad should get a run of games, I'd happily leave Hooper out for 2/3 weeks, allow him to get properly fit, he always looks struggling.

Its definitely a Psychological problem, no doubts about it, we can't play that well in Europe if the players aren't good enough so no doubts its a mental issue, I'd like to see us freshening it right up, bring in 3/4 players, give Rogne/McGeouch/Lassad a chance, bring fresh faces and ideas into the first team, we need it

On the otherhand its at least making the SPL look exciting but it will do nothing for our crowds

Hoping to see Lennon ring the changes, feel he's been a bit to rigid with his starting XI particularly before and after Champions League games

Unacceptable from Celtic

Congratulations to Arbroath though, after watching that shambles I'm glad they got a draw, hopefully they get a full house and TV for their efforts

I don't wanna sound like a snob but if Celtic can't take 4 off a team like arbroath at home then I don't want to go through with a poxy 1-0, the home form has been absolutely dreadful, even games they've been winning domestically the performances have been terrible

No point in saying it anyrthing other than like it is, I talk them up to the skies when they perform well in Europe so its only fair to be honest when its poor, some people might think I'm never happy, should be content with doing well in Europe and leading the league and being favourite for both cups but Celtic have a freedom this season to attack, we'll win the league, let's hope the snag and snuggle nature goes on for as long as possible but squad depth and strength tells us we'll win it, but without Rangers we should be trying to win games in some style.

I don't mind dropping points, its the slow mundane nature of our Home SPL performances that bugs me, I want to see McGeouch and Watt play as often as possible, if we don't perform well with kids in the team I can understand that, its when we don't perform with seasoned pros that begins to annoy me

There is a good few of us Old Firmers on here who can have a good decent unbiased discussion, don't tell anybody though Smile

I think Celtic have had more than an eye on Europe this season and without rangers their foots off the gas. I would say after tomorrow's game regardless of score Celtic will knuckle down and concentrate on domestic for a couple of months.

What an amazing result! Sounded very nervy on the radio and was having doubts. Well done Celtic for proving me wrong again!

Jesus Christ. Even more nerve wrecking than the Barca game for me but I think that could be down to me not having a few pints of Harp in the system tonight.

Definitely agree with you Kay Fabe about the league form. Ayrshire the players are definitely playing with 1 eye on the CL in the weeks before and after big games. This is something Lenny really has to sort out. Squad needs to be rotated more! If yhe players think they'll start no matter what performances will dip!

The match tonight. Far more attacking than has been the case in Europe so far this year. Both FB's got forward at every chance and Sammy and Commons is a lovely footballer in my eyes.

Sammy. I've said it before but I've never changed my mind about a player like I have on him. I wanted him out of the club 18 months ago but since the turn of the year he's been fantastic! Always had the natural attributes but the penny seems to have finally dropped. He's made me eat my words big time and I love him now!

Hooper that's the performance I wanted from ya. Work rate as well as showing the natura ability he possesses. Thought Kayal started well but he still doesn't look fit. I'm sorry and I really appreciate his workrate and passion but Brown gets shown up for his lack of technique at this level. The CB's had a rough night against the power and pace of Eminike but coped well enough.

Proud of the whole team and looking forward to the next league game and the draw for the next round.

"We're the famous Glasgow Celtic and we're off to Wembley...Wembley..Wembley"

Unbelievable, stunning, the English Champions and the reigning European Champions are out, we've went through beating Barcelona and winning away in the process, truly unbelievable European campaign so far, played 10 games, won 7 lost two drawn 1, against some top sides and some very decent sides

I thought Hooper was outstanding tonight, his touch and his workrate was 10/10 and his goal was fantastic, in injury time he won a foul for us in our RB position and he got the final kick of the game at the LB position.

I felt Scott Brown was different class tonight, he was just everywhere and his energy and enthusiasm drove us on all night, I felt he wasn't helped by Kayal particularly first half but he was immense.

I don't know what our Right Back did with Mikeal Lustig in the Summer but I love it, what a player, felt Izzaguirre was excellent too, Samaras takes big responsibility on big occassions, I respect that even if I've never always backed him

While I don't expect us to get through, I don't think any team will be comfortable drawing us due to our performances against Barcelona, we'll be heavy under-dogs again which I quite like and the team seems to thrive on.

I want a wee week in Malaga so I'll have that please

PSG can look really good at times but look like a moody team as well, Man Utd are weak with crosses, Celtic's biggest assest in the CL, that tie would capture the imagination in the UK at least

I'd love a crack at Dortmund, for me they're the most entertaining team in the competition and that atmosphere is electric, it woulf be an amazing and colourful tie

Too right. The way Lenny has us playing in Europe makes us a difficult team to beat. I'd love a few days away in Malaga myself. The only away game I wouldn't consider going to would be Juve due to what happened to the Spurs fan a few weeks back!

Dortmund I would see as the hardest team we could draw although it would be an exceptional atmosphere. I don't expect us to get through but we won't make it easy for anyone I don't think and who knows, we might just go to Wembley!

I think Dortmund and probably Bayern will be the hardest ties for the style they play, every single team at this point will be solid, it was all about getting to the Champions League, then it was all about giving a good honest account of ourselves, then it was about trying to stay in Europe, then it was all about qualifying for the last 16

We've punched well above our weight so what ever happens happens, I've read that Celtic have gained the most co-efficient points in Europe this season 0.5 ahead of Malaga, that will hopefully stand us in good stead for future seasons too

Wanyama was a huge loss last night, that shouldn't be underestimated

And now its all about getting to the final Wink haha. In all seriousness i couldn't ask for any more from the team. They have been exceptional and the most I would have hoped for was a Europa League spot. Now that they've got to the last 16 there's always the hope of a miracle and we get through another round or 3.

Big Victor was a massive loss last night which made the win more impressive but the main thing is we won and we're through. He'll have his chance again in the next round.

The different dimensions to the German's games is what would worry me most. We would have struggled even more against Barca if they had a targetman and both German teams have very good out and out strikers in Lewandoski and Gomez.

Yeah I agree, our CB's do well against pace but when teams hit the CF early and he gets to take it in and take a touch we struggle, no real power between them, Rogne would be a much better option against one of them.

I agree, you gotta be in it to win it, while its as unlikely as anything you'll ever do in football, you gotta believe and over two games vs a full strengtrh Barca we held our own so shouldn't be overly scared of anyone, wee bit a luck might see us through another round...why not Smile

Counting down the days until the draw.

Nice to get a win after a European game this season. I was working and haven't even seen any highlights so can't comment. Great to see Scotty chip in with a goal so maybe he can shut me up if he can keep performing.

You'll enjoy the third goal, it was a cracker, very reminicent of the 4th goal at Love Street when we won the league in 86, plenty of passing and every outfield player touched the ball in the build up to the goal, could be a goal of the year contender

I finish up in work next Wednesday so my first day off is the Champions League draw, regardless of who we get it's exciting, daunting but exciting, that's why you support your club, to dream the impossible

Back to reality though, I'm heading up to Arbroath tomorrow, looking for a good strong professional performance, we've been pretty impressive away from home all season, I'm looking for 4-0 to be honest

Kay, that must have been some goal as it was scored 5 years before I was born and you're still talking about it!

We' have to make the most of our opportunities tonight. See Forrest is back in training. Hoping for a mix of young and old heads tonight to get the job done. What's the craic with Rogne?

Heard Rogne wasn't too happy about the contract Celtic offered him and threatened to walk in the Summer so Celtic have put him on ice to let him dwell on his decision for a while, to be honest though Wilson and Ambrose have built a pretty decent partnership so he might struggle to get back in the team

I'm not to fussed about young faces as such, most of our team is quite young, can't get enough of Tony Watt though and Dylan McGeouch

He hasn't done anything to suggest he'd be operating at a higher level than Wilson and Ambrose recently is right. Good young player but he needn't get ideas above his station!
Aye that's what I meant the likes of Watt, McGeouch and even Lassad. Has Miku left or is he going next month?

Good performance yesterday from Celtic, best home league performance since the 2-2 draw with Hibs, as comfortable a performance as you could hope for, CeltiC are still struggling creatively though, they miss Ki Sung Yeung big time at Celtic Park, Wanyama is great but Ki had that visiion that was just one step ahead, Kayal had a good game yesterday, was playing much higher up the park than normal, plenty of runs beyond the ball

Still not scoring enough goals at Celtic Park, 9 league goals in 8 games isn't good enough, hopefully yesterday was the start of a good home run though

Was as one sided a game as I've seen in a long time. Nice finish from Hooper. I think we should have had a few penalties, but I need to watch them again.

We do miss a spark, thought Commons was sorely missed yesterday. If we can find the player, a creative midfielder would be an ideal purchase next month.

We don't need a creative midfielder to win the title but I think we do need one to help liven up these home games, we should have got at least two penalties, yhat one on Hooper was as stone a waller as you'll see
